Hugh just another baised video about false culture. Please note* That Japan never practiced whaling in Antartica for culture, they practiced Coastal Whaling. Although Japan has been banned from Coastal Whaling they should be changing that law instead of invading International Waters to whale because they killed of most Marine Mammals near their Islands. Note* Japan was banned from Coastal Whaling because large whales have become extinct in those islands only small dolphins are left
Please also note that most of Humpbacks and Sperm whales in the Japanese coastal waters were hunted by the western whalers in the 19th century nearly to the extinction and almost destroyed the life of local fishermen.
@cloudberry121 you whale munching Japs love using that word "cult". We have another one we use for you. Drop the "l" and substitute an "n". Yes that's it....
Like I said it was not the local fishermen who drove Right whales in the Japanese waters into extinction and drove Humpbacks and Sperm whales nearly to extinction. It was the western whales who over-hunted those species. Since the over hunt by western countries, Japanese whalers had to go far into the ocean in their tiny boats and risk their lives.
Now Japanese whalers have factory ship and harpoon cannon and go after whales like Minke whales that swim too fast to be caught by traditional technique. And they can also now go into the open seas. But is it fair to tell them not to invade international waters and hunt whales after exploiting their waters?
JAPANESE PEOPLE SPEAK OUT *AGAINST* JAPANESE WHALERS:
The man who was the actual spokesperson for the Japanese Whalers says whalers are an embarassment to Japanese people.
"Whaling..is less than 0.01 the value of the country's annual market for Toothbrushes"-Japan admitted
"The international shame of whaling on Japan is great. I hated this issue because there's no point in Japan sticking to its position!" said Official Japanese Govt Minister & whaling Spokesperson Taniguchi.
This video is an intelligent response to the demonisation of Japan but it is too bad that most of the poeple against, lack any intelligence in their responses. What I see is a majority of emotional, subjective and accusative posts, charged with racism.
The blood of whaling still stains your own hands. The most damage done to whale populations historically was perpetrated not by the Japanese but by Europe. Your ancestors didn't whale because they were 'evil' and neither do the Japanese.
This Japanease bloke in just 5 minutes made more inteligent sence then greenpeace has made in 30 years.
What it realy boils down to is an attack by fundamentalists on anyone who dosent beleive in their Fundamentalist religon.
Have you ever tried to debate an issue with at fundamental christian? Exactly the same situation.
Oh and in responce to manmanchio. Not all Australians with low IQ or are stupid dont understant. There are many high IQ Aust that dont understand too like in cults.
NEWS: JAPANESE WHALERS LINKED TO EXTREMIST RELIGIOUS CULT
Tokyo - "Japan's Whaling operation has been linked to the Sun Myung Moon Religious Cult. Japanese officials have found the whaling operation run by ICR Kyodo Senpaku, is financially linked to Kyokuyo, a distributor found to have dealings with "TRUE WORLD FOODS" exposed as being run by the Sun Myung Moon "UNIFICATION CHURCH". This group is known as an extremist cult which has infiltrated the US called the "Moonies".
We never had absolutely no wheals.green peace drop off asking for donations twice a week with yelling about the issue to my mail box.I dont think if French people eats frogs and Japan is the same.just let australians yell,pump-up the volume your voices if you want.who cares.
He uses the same argument all the wildlife animal killers of the world do. "I looks bloody and that's why you protest." He's such a novice at this. A cow can be killed 99% of the time, in the US with the first "stunning". Of the cows not rendered unconscious with the first stunning, they are "restunned" within seconds. Whales die slowly over the course of up to an hour. They die the death of a thousand cuts. There is NO comparison.
Gotta love how those fucking Japs try and justify whaling. Scientific research my ass. Ever since they adopted that whole "scientific whaling" approach, they've killed over 100,00 whales. They've produced 1 paper for every 2,500 whales killed, and they still cannot figure out the whale population. Reason being is because YOU KEEP KILLING THEM ALL! How fucking delusional are you goddamn Japs? I hope the U.S. nukes your sorry asses again, but this time, I hope they finish the job.
There is no reason for racism. Grow the hell up and stop being a child. I can't believe that poeple as ignorant and spiteful as you exist. Some of the most wonderful people I know are Japanese and they would never stoop as low as you have done. In all the years I have lived in Japan, I have never been called names or abused for my nationality but I KNOW that poeple like you can make living in Western countries a living hell. You are backward and horrible people.
The only thing that comments like yours will do is further antagonise the other side into doing what you don't want them to do. And that makes you at least partially responsible for the killings of the whales because you couldn't be bothered to be mindful with how you approach the issue.
The world doesn't revolve around you - the sooner you realise that, the less disappointing your life will turn out to be.
Have you noticed YouTube has messed up the order of the comments? Makes the conversation thread very difficult to follow - which is a pity because I think we were having a great exploration of the issues.
Thanks for your input, 5969ddff, I appreciate the time you've given here thus far.
>Japan slaughtered hundreds of thousands of whales for their oil in order to finance its invasion of China.
Whaling was to finance the invasion of China? People like to bring up Japan's war crime or invasion when we start discussing about whaling. Why is that, I wonder? Shouldn't we leave "Stolen Generation" and "War" out of this? In those days Japan was a poor country. We had to make money regardless of war. (Mainly by sericultural industry)
It is true that in the early days of Japan's whaling in Antarctica, meat was dumped into sea but they soon stopped and began bringing back meat. We have been eating whale meat harvested in Antarctica from the beginning of the 20th Century. I think the first consumption boom was during post-Russo-Japanese War era. (1905-)
The problem is that in many markets it is not possible to tell which whale meat you are buying - or indeed if its whale at all.
The Japanese government has itself issued public health advice to restrict the intake of whale and dolphin meat.
Dr. Cipriano also conclusively demonstrated through his genetic studies that protected whales - including humpbacks - were finding their way onto Japanese plates. Japan had previously denied this, claiming it was frozen meat from before the Moratorium.
We're not interested in getting into a discussion about Japan's wider role in human history, as it's completely irrelevant to the whaling issue (and my apologies if the comment was taken that way) - the point I was making was that Morishita-san deftly suggested that "western" countries were responsible for whale species being endangered. I simply wished to put this in its proper historical context, and point out that Japan hunted whales for oil to support its economy too.
Given that WDCS is against all whaling in whatever guise, I can't really comment on the relative merits of the RMP - it still results in the hunting of whales.
I must agree that it is not fair to say Japan had nothing to do with endangering some of the whale species in Antarctica. Because during the "Whale Olympic" era (1948-1959) Japan was the top 4 ->3 ->4 ->2 ->1 whaling country. And some whalers confessed later that during this time not all of the meat was brought back from Antarctica.
Oh, BTW, I must apologize and take back my word. Japan's whaling in Antarctica began in 1934.
It is said that in the early days they had to dump the meat in Antarctica oceans due to economical and technical reasons. (Though, I think most of the whales harvested around Japan weren't wasted) I don't know precisely when they started to bring back meat from Antarctica but this period should be less than 7 years.
I was observing whaling statistics for about half an hour. I can not say for sure because the statistics were complicated, but the amount of whale meat wasted by the Japanese whaling ships in this period doesn't seemed to be so large considering the number of whales hunted by the mankind during 18 -- 20th Century.
What Mr. Morishita had in his mind was, I think, the fact that Japanese have been utilizing the whales and didn't waste them during most of their history while western countries have hunted whales only for oil for 300 or 400 years.
I believe Mr. Morishita didn't mean to say that Japan didn't export whale oil for profit. But yes, his interview might be misleading. He probably wanted to say that the main purpose of future commercial whaling by Japan, Norway and Iceland will be to obtain food and not oil so there will be less fear about over hunt, especially under the new management scheme.
On the webpage (in Japanese) below Mr. Morishita, answering to a question from Japanese citizen, is saying that he does not agree with some of the videos posted on Youtube by Japanese pro-whaling citizens.
w w w
(dot) e-kujira (dot) or (dot) jp/ geiron/morishita/1/
@5969ddff What Mr. Morishita had in his mind was, I think, the fact that Japanese have been raping the ocean and disregarding their neighbours' maritime boundaries for centuries and need to be called out as the thieving arseholes that they are.
Hard-line anti-whaling countries are mainly western countries. Of course there are people opposed to whaling in Asia and Africa. As you know there is a Greenpeace's branch in Japan too. But I don't think majority of mankind are opposed to whaling.
The reference to "western" countries implies a cultural or race schism which we believe misrepresents the case. Australia and New Zealand are not "western" countries, nor is China.
Given the populace of anti-whaling countries at the IWC, it would be fair to say that the majority of people worldwide do not support whaling.
Japan, Norway and Iceland are the only remaining countries to carry out whaling on a large scale, particularly Japan, who are aggressively pushing a pro-whaling agenda. Some smaller nations and aboriginal communities still take whales to feed their communities.
The rest of the world abandoned whaling some time ago, and it is considered by the majority of people to be unacceptable in the 21st century. This does not only apply to 'western" nations.
Whilst its true that there are more Minke whales than other whale species, it's not strictly true to say they are "abundant". The last recognised study was in 1988/98 which estimated a population of 761,000.
But this study was flawed because it has been discovered that it is composed of TWO distinct species, not one. The IWC is reviewing this matter.
Even if there were 761,000 Minke whales, is this "abundant"? In comparison, Japan's population is 127 million.
Whilst its true many "western" countries hunted whales for their oil and contributed to the devastating decline in whale populations, Japan is far from an innocent party during this era.
Japan slaughtered hundreds of thousands of whales for their oil in order to finance its invasion of China. They only stopped throwing the dead whale meat overboard when their troops in Manchuria faced starvation. So to point fingers at "western" countries is rather disingenuous.
Some Japanese do eat whale meat - many do not - and that is entirely their choice. However, it may not be "scientifically" wise to do so.
A study carried out by renowned geneticist Dr. Frank Cipriano took samples of "whale meat" from markets in Tokyo, and found that not only was a substantial amount actually dolphin meat (and meat from protected whale species), but that it contained 10 times the safe limit of mercury and PCB contaminants.
Many environmental NGOs, including Greenpeace, IFAW, WWF and WDCS do use whaling footage in their campaign videos to raise funds to fight whaling.
However, the point of the footage is to show how cruel whaling is. Morishita-san refers to slaughterhouses - well, no slaughterhouse would be permitted to allow an animal to suffer for up to an hour before bleeding to death or drowning. Even the hotly disputed figure of "1-2 minutes" is far too long.
It is also disingenuous to suggest environmental groups benefit from whaling continuing. WDCS is committed to ending ALL forms of whaling, and to protecting all species of cetaceans and their natural habitats.
In the UK, charities are regulated by the Charities Commission, and have to adhere to very strict fundraising rules. Our accounts are audited annually and the results openly published.
Whilst I can't speak for Greenpeace, I can tell you that WDCS spends far, FAR more on anti-whaling campaign actions (lobbying governments, attending IWC and CITES meetings, partnering with CMS and so on) than we raise through advertising of the whaling issue. Most of our funds come from people "adopting" animals - a positive experience that connects people to the animals rather than using negative imagery of whale slaughter.
Again returning to the issue of the "western" media - Japan has worked very hard to promote (or defend) whaling through a number of vectors; science, culture, race, sustainability and quite often by pointing fingers at other countries. The number of pro-whaling videos on YouTube gives you an idea of the type of propaganda used. All of these have ben debunked by the conservation community - Japanese whaling is entirely about the greed of a few businessmen, nothing more.
The JARPA and JARPA II programs existed to harvest whales from Antarctica for the purposes of selling whale meat. Yes, some perfunctory scientific research was carried out, but of the papers produced, most are not peer-reviewed (i.e. worthless) and the few that have been of value to the IWC scientific committee could probably have been produced using non-lethal methods, and definitely without killing 1,000 whales a year.
It's commercial whaling, and they are lying about it.

It's commercial whaling, and they are lying about it.
All of which can be done using non-lethal techniques - such as biopsy darts, collection of sloughed skin and feces, and mark-recapture studies.
An interesting new technology has been developed at Southern Cross University Whale Research Center in NSW, Australia, which promises to determine a whale's age by examining "telomeres" from the its chromosomes.
With these technologies, Japan won't need to kill the whales, will they? I wonder if they'll put as much effort into non-lethal research?
Is it practical? Japan's research is conducted in only part of the Antarctic Ocean. In area IV and V. Why doesn't the Whale Research Center conduct a research in other areas and prove their method is better than JARPNII's ?
While there might be some truth here, I don't accept this guys arguments. I've heard him draw parrallels between whaling and killing farmed livestock. That's just silly. I've also heard him criticise Australia for kulling kangaroos when really it's Australia's obligation to, because creating farmland caused the kangaroo population explosion. The Japanese can't deny that they are lying when they say the whaling is for scientific purposes....And what's with whaling inside restricted areas?
Whale stock research is the precondition for the resuming of commercial whaling. I thought members of IWC have agreed on this in 1982?
If Japan wants to propose the resuming of commercial whaling, they must do a research and provide the data to IWC Scientific Committee and that is what they are doing now.
It seems to me that both anti and pro-whaling sides are ignoring the resolution of IWC meeting. In 2006, IWC issued a resolution calling on members to end the moratorium but it was ignored by anti-whaling countries. This was because a resolution which did not obtain 3/4 of the votes does not bind members.
"while JARPA results were not required for management under the Revised Management Procedure (RMP), they had the potential to improve it in the following ways: (1) reductions in the current set of plausible scenarios considered in RMP Implementation Simulation Trials; and (2) identification of new scenarios to which future Implementation Simulation Trials will have to be developed (e.g. the temporal component of stock structure).
The results of analyses of JARPA might allow an increased allowed catch of minke whales in the Southern Hemisphere without increasing the depletion risk above the level indicated by the existing Implementation Simulation Trials for these minke whales." (IWC Scientific Committee)
And it is necessary to kill whales to do this? You couldn't just go into the Antarctic and count them visually, perhaps aided with hydrophone technology?
Ask any scientist - peer-review is the cornerstone of their profession. Without peer-review, an academic could write literally anything and present it as "truth". Peer-review forces scientists to qualify their arguments and keeps them honest.
Ahem - that resolution was bought by the Japanese government, as virtually all of the countries that supported it are developing nations whom have received "economic aid" (bribes) from Japan.
If we're honest, this was the same tactic used by conservationists to acquire the 1986 ban in the first place - but I think the difference is we (conservationists) used the tactic to save many species, whereas Japan wants to exploit them for its own profit.
the current dispute with australia and japan has nothing to do with japanese eating whales. but everything to do with japan POACHING whales from the australian antarctic economic exclution zone. hunt whales in the sea of japan by all means. respect australin wishes for a marine reserve in the southern ocean
This is 1000000% correct. Hunt elsewhere if you want to create a bad name for yourself. BUT RESPECT AUSTRALIA'S WISHES - WE PROTECT WHAT WE CHERISH. AND WE CHERISH OUR WILDLIFE - BOTH LAND AND SEA.
Australian EEZ? The hunt is in the so-called AAT Waters, which, under the 1975 Antarctic treaty, Australia is to not claim as part of its territory. Australia's legalistic territorial claim (EEZ etc.) is only recognized by 6 countries - Japan isn't part of this. Furthermore, the SOWS allows for Scientific whaling (Scientific committee of the IWC) to take place. Japan has submitted over 200 papers to the IWC and various scientific journals, Check for them - scientific whaling is not a sham.
Firstly, I would say the criticisms that people are presenting are against the Fisheries Agency of Japan, not the Japanese people.
Neither the IWC Scientific Committee or the Commission allocate Scientific whaling permits. The decision to hunt minkes and other species is only the decision of the Japanese Fisheries Agency. They have sole responsibility for deciding what to hunt, how many to hunt and where to hunt. The IWC has repeatedly requested that this 'scientific whaling' NOT take place
Yes, and the best part is that Japan offers financial incentives to cash starved African, Pacific and other countries in return for those countries voting for the resumption of whaling at the IWC. And many people around the world are aware of this. Grow up Japan and start trying to help the world rather than upsetting Australia, China, South and North Korea, Russia and everywhere else the Japanese upset people. I usd to live in China and boy, I think the 1.2 billion people there hate Japan. Why
Japan provides aid to 160 countries, including anti-whaling countries. Japan is the second largest ODA (Official Development Assistance) donor in the world, just behind US. If It was all about assistance, we'd have a lot more votes. Anyway - who's in the anti-Whaling group? US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, NZ etc. I think they have just a bit more money than Japan, and they buy votes (e.g Lord Ashcroft paid for Belize's membership, Israel receives $3bn in military aid annually from US).
"Upsetting" North Korea? Where have you been living - under a rock?? The last time I checked, it was the North Koreans firing inflammatory remarks and threatening the world with its nuclea artillery. And don't think that the other countries you've listed there have got cleaner bed sheets than Japan. You're attempts to make Japan look like the ONLY bad guy has a stench that smells suspiciously like racial discrimination.
Morishita from Japanese Fisheries should explain why Japan has gone against the IWC passed resolution - "Resolution 2007-1, Resolution on JARPA" - requesting Japan to stop doing lethal research in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Needless to say, Japan has ignored the IWC resolution and has continued lethal research.
Japan needs to adhere to the IWC, and stop poaching whales from the Whale Sanctuary.
Americ keeps killing endangered whales (bowhead whale)in Alaska and keep eating whale meat in name of "traditional culture". Greenpeace and SheShepherd think they can get away with doing any coward mean only against Japan and Japanese. Greenpeace and SheShepherd are Racist!!
Morishita is a disgusting person. The reputation of Japan with its friends in the US Canada, Australia and New Zealand is sinking fast. I think Japan will live to regret subsidizing disgusting liars like Morishita.
When I saw the pictures of the adulat and calf being hauled into that revolting Japanese ship.. I immediately donated another $1000 to help re-fuel the Steve Irwin... do the same folks.
I wouldn't call the U.S., Canada, Australia or New Zealand "friends" of Japan; they're more like acquaintances who benefit greatly from the billions the Japanese pump into their economies.
And while Morishita has at least given a response that explains his position, why don't you do something similar instead of throwing around cheap insults?
when the japenese stop trying to say they kill whales for scientific purposes instead of stuffing them in their filthy mouths then perhaps we can start to move forward
Child, you're not going to convince anyone with those kind of insults. Plus, if you really are concerned for the whales, then it'd do them good to not antagonise anyone into doing exactly what you don't want them to do.
Australia tries to obtain a consequential, political rights with a whale fishing card because it wants rights of the South Pole. It tries to grasp the hegemony of the South Pole. It is a dirty country. Never concede to Australia by the whaling issue.
I totally agree to the speaker's point of view. I strongly suggest that Japan should start an international media campain to educate common people on this issue. Australians should take care of kangaroos and dingos please ...
We already do, and while this may sense to you, to us pointing the finger at Australia does not alter the facts that there is a ban and you are breaking it in Australian waters, claimed under the Antarctic treaty.
So far Australia has established a whale sanctuary. It is there for good reasons.
I don't know about the treaty but if whaling ships are hunting whales there and nobody wants it, somebody has to stop it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yes... instead of fighting among ourself, we must educate each other about our culture. and Is there any ban on whaling? I think, minke whales are not endangered? are they....
If Japan stop whaling, the number of fish around there will be reduced. Japanese people eat fish mainly so that will destloy Japanese food culture. It will be good news for America because they want to export more of their meat to Japan. I don't want them to lose their food culture which is healthy and beautiful.
The number of fish would balance if the illegal fishing that occurs in that area is stopped.
BTW - the MAJOR component of whales diet in that area is krill, which is mainly threatened due to commercial interests in "fishing down the food chain".
The most and problematic issue globally is population increase of humans.
This is a lot of nonsense. Whales and humans do not compete for fish, this has been proven. Even if we did, simply removing a predator from a complex ecosystem will not necessarily result in an increase of its prey species - it's far more complex than that.
For your reference, the primary component of a baleen whale's diet is krill - a species humans have no use for, but which plays a vital part in the food chain.

"Our advice is not to eat whale meat," due to the impact on child's brains, said Janneche Utne Skaare, deputy director of the Nordic Natl Institute.
"Japan, Norway, & Denmark have issued advisories against eating whale meat sold by whalers because of brain damage due to toxic mercury."

5969ddff 3 years ago
It is true that in the early days of Japan's whaling in Antarctica, meat was dumped into sea but they soon stopped and began bringing back meat. We have been eating whale meat harvested in Antarctica from the beginning of the 20th Century. I think the first consumption boom was during post-Russo-Japanese War era. (1905-)
5969ddff 3 years ago
>it contained 10 times the safe limit of mercury and PCB contaminants.
What about the whales in Antarctica? Are they contaminated?
Maybe Dr. Cipriano should have advice Japanese not to eat Tuna, dolphin or American beef but eat Aussie beef or Antarctica minke whale instead.
5969ddff 3 years ago
The problem is that in many markets it is not possible to tell which whale meat you are buying - or indeed if its whale at all.
The Japanese government has itself issued public health advice to restrict the intake of whale and dolphin meat.
Dr. Cipriano also conclusively demonstrated through his genetic studies that protected whales - including humpbacks - were finding their way onto Japanese plates. Japan had previously denied this, claiming it was frozen meat from before the Moratorium.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
We're not interested in getting into a discussion about Japan's wider role in human history, as it's completely irrelevant to the whaling issue (and my apologies if the comment was taken that way) - the point I was making was that Morishita-san deftly suggested that "western" countries were responsible for whale species being endangered. I simply wished to put this in its proper historical context, and point out that Japan hunted whales for oil to support its economy too.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
Given that WDCS is against all whaling in whatever guise, I can't really comment on the relative merits of the RMP - it still results in the hunting of whales.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
I must agree that it is not fair to say Japan had nothing to do with endangering some of the whale species in Antarctica. Because during the "Whale Olympic" era (1948-1959) Japan was the top 4 ->3 ->4 ->2 ->1 whaling country. And some whalers confessed later that during this time not all of the meat was brought back from Antarctica.
5969ddff 3 years ago
Oh, BTW, I must apologize and take back my word. Japan's whaling in Antarctica began in 1934.
It is said that in the early days they had to dump the meat in Antarctica oceans due to economical and technical reasons. (Though, I think most of the whales harvested around Japan weren't wasted) I don't know precisely when they started to bring back meat from Antarctica but this period should be less than 7 years.
5969ddff 3 years ago 2
I was observing whaling statistics for about half an hour. I can not say for sure because the statistics were complicated, but the amount of whale meat wasted by the Japanese whaling ships in this period doesn't seemed to be so large considering the number of whales hunted by the mankind during 18 -- 20th Century.
5969ddff 3 years ago 2
What Mr. Morishita had in his mind was, I think, the fact that Japanese have been utilizing the whales and didn't waste them during most of their history while western countries have hunted whales only for oil for 300 or 400 years.
5969ddff 3 years ago 4
I believe Mr. Morishita didn't mean to say that Japan didn't export whale oil for profit. But yes, his interview might be misleading. He probably wanted to say that the main purpose of future commercial whaling by Japan, Norway and Iceland will be to obtain food and not oil so there will be less fear about over hunt, especially under the new management scheme.

@WDCSUK
Hard-line anti-whaling countries are mainly western countries. Of course there are people opposed to whaling in Asia and Africa. As you know there is a Greenpeace's branch in Japan too. But I don't think majority of mankind are opposed to whaling.
5969ddff 3 years ago
The reference to "western" countries implies a cultural or race schism which we believe misrepresents the case. Australia and New Zealand are not "western" countries, nor is China.
Given the populace of anti-whaling countries at the IWC, it would be fair to say that the majority of people worldwide do not support whaling.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
With respect to Morishita-san, the comments that follow are a point-by-point rebuttal to his video:
WDCSUK 3 years ago
"Western media bias"
Japan, Norway and Iceland are the only remaining countries to carry out whaling on a large scale, particularly Japan, who are aggressively pushing a pro-whaling agenda. Some smaller nations and aboriginal communities still take whales to feed their communities.
The rest of the world abandoned whaling some time ago, and it is considered by the majority of people to be unacceptable in the 21st century. This does not only apply to 'western" nations.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
"Minke whales are abundant"
Whilst its true that there are more Minke whales than other whale species, it's not strictly true to say they are "abundant". The last recognised study was in 1988/98 which estimated a population of 761,000.
But this study was flawed because it has been discovered that it is composed of TWO distinct species, not one. The IWC is reviewing this matter.
Even if there were 761,000 Minke whales, is this "abundant"? In comparison, Japan's population is 127 million.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
"Western whaling"
Whilst its true many "western" countries hunted whales for their oil and contributed to the devastating decline in whale populations, Japan is far from an innocent party during this era.
Japan slaughtered hundreds of thousands of whales for their oil in order to finance its invasion of China. They only stopped throwing the dead whale meat overboard when their troops in Manchuria faced starvation. So to point fingers at "western" countries is rather disingenuous.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
"Japanese - is it right to eat whale meat?"

"Greenpeace show bloody whaling videos" - Part 1
Many environmental NGOs, including Greenpeace, IFAW, WWF and WDCS do use whaling footage in their campaign videos to raise funds to fight whaling.
However, the point of the footage is to show how cruel whaling is. Morishita-san refers to slaughterhouses - well, no slaughterhouse would be permitted to allow an animal to suffer for up to an hour before bleeding to death or drowning. Even the hotly disputed figure of "1-2 minutes" is far too long.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
"Greenpeace show bloody whaling videos" - Part 2
It is also disingenuous to suggest environmental groups benefit from whaling continuing. WDCS is committed to ending ALL forms of whaling, and to protecting all species of cetaceans and their natural habitats.
In the UK, charities are regulated by the Charities Commission, and have to adhere to very strict fundraising rules. Our accounts are audited annually and the results openly published.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
Whilst I can't speak for Greenpeace, I can tell you that WDCS spends far, FAR more on anti-whaling campaign actions (lobbying governments, attending IWC and CITES meetings, partnering with CMS and so on) than we raise through advertising of the whaling issue. Most of our funds come from people "adopting" animals - a positive experience that connects people to the animals rather than using negative imagery of whale slaughter.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
"Mind control"
Again returning to the issue of the "western" media - Japan has worked very hard to promote (or defend) whaling through a number of vectors; science, culture, race, sustainability and quite often by pointing fingers at other countries. The number of pro-whaling videos on YouTube gives you an idea of the type of propaganda used. All of these have ben debunked by the conservation community - Japanese whaling is entirely about the greed of a few businessmen, nothing more.

"Japanese research"
The JARPA and JARPA II programs existed to harvest whales from Antarctica for the purposes of selling whale meat. Yes, some perfunctory scientific research was carried out, but of the papers produced, most are not peer-reviewed (i.e. worthless) and the few that have been of value to the IWC scientific committee could probably have been produced using non-lethal methods, and definitely without killing 1,000 whales a year.
It's commercial whaling, and they are lying about it.

Whale stock research is the precondition for the resuming of commercial whaling. I thought members of IWC have agreed on this in 1982?
If Japan wants to propose the resuming of commercial whaling, they must do a research and provide the data to IWC Scientific Committee and that is what they are doing now.

Yet the IWC continues to issue resolutions calling on Japan to cease this hunt. Last year the vote was 40 to 2 asking Japan to withdraw JARPA II
Any very little of the work is peer-reviewed, a critical part of evaluating the validity of any new research
Wasn't one of the research projects trying to cross-breed whales with cattle? What was the goal of that project?
Population estimates rely heavily on visual sightings, and now we have acoustics to assist. Do you really need to kill the whales?
techservices 3 years ago
It seems to me that both anti and pro-whaling sides are ignoring the resolution of IWC meeting. In 2006, IWC issued a resolution calling on members to end the moratorium but it was ignored by anti-whaling countries. This was because a resolution which did not obtain 3/4 of the votes does not bind members.
5969ddff 3 years ago

5969ddff 3 years ago

"while JARPA results were not required for management under the Revised Management Procedure (RMP), they had the potential to improve it in the following ways: (1) reductions in the current set of plausible scenarios considered in RMP Implementation Simulation Trials; and (2) identification of new scenarios to which future Implementation Simulation Trials will have to be developed (e.g. the temporal component of stock structure).
5969ddff 3 years ago
The results of analyses of JARPA might allow an increased allowed catch of minke whales in the Southern Hemisphere without increasing the depletion risk above the level indicated by the existing Implementation Simulation Trials for these minke whales." (IWC Scientific Committee)
5969ddff 3 years ago
And it is necessary to kill whales to do this? You couldn't just go into the Antarctic and count them visually, perhaps aided with hydrophone technology?
WDCSUK 3 years ago
Ask any scientist - peer-review is the cornerstone of their profession. Without peer-review, an academic could write literally anything and present it as "truth". Peer-review forces scientists to qualify their arguments and keeps them honest.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
I believe it was one of the many weird and wonderful experiments carried out under the original JARPA program.
WDCSUK 3 years ago
Ahem - that resolution was bought by the Japanese government, as virtually all of the countries that supported it are developing nations whom have received "economic aid" (bribes) from Japan.
If we're honest, this was the same tactic used by conservationists to acquire the 1986 ban in the first place - but I think the difference is we (conservationists) used the tactic to save many species, whereas Japan wants to exploit them for its own profit.

july018 4 years ago
The number of fish would balance if the illegal fishing that occurs in that area is stopped.
BTW - the MAJOR component of whales diet in that area is krill, which is mainly threatened due to commercial interests in "fishing down the food chain".
The most and problematic issue globally is population increase of humans.
Beweboy 4 years ago
This is a lot of nonsense. Whales and humans do not compete for fish, this has been proven. Even if we did, simply removing a predator from a complex ecosystem will not necessarily result in an increase of its prey species - it's far more complex than that.
For your reference, the primary component of a baleen whale's diet is krill - a species humans have no use for, but which plays a vital part in the food chain.
