The song is "cool"........the video is great. Love the "hood"; it's HOME to me. Very uplifting and inspiring to see parts of my old area in a delightful presentation.
"I think this video fails to be inclusive and representative."
And I think your comment reeks of fail.
It's attitudes like this that create trouble where none exists.. and guarantees that people with continue to bitch and moan about race and ethnicity for the rest of time.
Just a happy little song and video that makes people smile.. so naturally there's people counting the colour of the people in the video??
Woke up to this fun tune on CBC Radio 2 yesterday morning. Bob Mackowycz said it should be the top pop song for 2011! Only caught the last half and immediately looked it up on CBC's online playlist so hear it again. Love it!!
Yes, I too heard about this video on CBC R2, and it was worth looking for...
Wonderful East coast colourful architecture & 'hometown socializing' provide backdrop to catchy, simple lyrics. While it's not, necessarily, my style of music- the video makes it & opens a door.. Congrats to the band & director !
And I'm just too busy enjoying watching the video to be doing anything else ..(like .. counting minorities ?? ).
WOOPWOOP, I love this bid. Just found jenn grant through listening to my fav new radio station 94.1 CBC radio2 ....she is wicked cool, awesome talent. All other comments , ie. Status, race , etc.... Come ooonnnn peeps. There are enough wars going on in the world right now.... Focus on peace....just think to yourself.... Hmmm, does this really need to be said , or can I just let this go and dance....~peace
Oh, and also, it reminded me so much of St. John's, Newfoundland! The houses and stuff. Well, until it flicked to the big high-rise apartment building. But still, lovely visuals. Made me miss home for a few minutes there. :o)
Looooove Jenn Grant! She puts on a great show! Saw her for the first time when in Charlottetown, opening for Hawksley Workman in Sept. 2009 and was instantly hooked. :o)
This video is publicized as the North End united in dance. It's not "a select sub-population of an otherwise diverse community." The North End. Period. So if the video wants to represent the North End, the creators need to consider who they're actually representing, and who is being left out of the image. Since 50% of Halifax's visible minorities are Black, and the dancers all seem to be white, I think this video fails to be inclusive and representative.
This video makes me smile...I love the colour, the joy and how sweet and awkward and real the performers are. It's a lot of fun. Fun! That is it. I will not look on this and take it as political, racial or anything other than fun. Good work Jenn!
For the record - the neighborhood is really not so gentrified as your propaganda would like you to believe. I live in this neighborhood - I saw this video being filmed, and I am VERY far from upper class financially. I am not *black*, this is true - but I choose to live in the North end because I like it, and also because a working class single mom can still afford to live here. Learn the reality before you spout the propaganda you've been fed.

All I'm saying is that this used to be a neighborhood with color , diversity , and character , now it is becoming more and more gentrified , full of yuppies and hipster students , people who would have never stepped foot there 10 years ago
. It' s sad that the black community was removed from Africville against their will ,.Now , because of higher rental prices , they are being driven to suburbs , destroying their community because white yuppies and hipsters will pay $ to live now ..
I heard those exact same criticisms over thirty years, but the North End is still there, and in better condition, and skin colour doesn't matter. Also don't go slammin' 'hipster' students - they're usually the ones who are the least racist.
I can't believe you see this great little video and it inspires you to pull out the race card. I believe the location was chosen for the distinct architecture, all saved by proud homeowners of all colours and income levels. Its a vibrant, multicultural neighbourhood now, no longer a slum run by absentee landlords. As for the dancers, there was an open casting call on facebook, and they used the people that showed up. If it bothers you, you need to rethink things.

The girl is kinda cute and has a great singing voice .... however I have a big problem with this video ... I lived in the North End for a long time , sad to see the neighborhood overrun by white upper middle class hipsters .
This is a black neighborhood , yet NOT ONE BLACK PERSON in the video .
Shows how gentrified this neighborhood is now , all the poor people have been pushed out to remote suburbs due to rising housing cost ... I guess this video shows the "new" North end ,, depressing .
@discoghettotek unfortunate that you didn't see behind the scenes of this video...the neighbourhood (people of all walks and colour) came to life. people where dancing on the spot, taking pics with their cameras/phones and enjoying the bond that is music. For the record--the invite was open to the whole community to participate. Whoever showed up and wanted to be in it-could. Be the change.
awwwww! :)

@discoghettotek,
Were you driven out of your house by people shooting music videos in your street?
You judge all these people as white upper middle class hipsters? based on what?
and look they are all clearly street people, dancing street people does that make you feel better?
I don't think the video is supposed to show anything but people dancing to this song.
anyway hope you're feeling better.
