  • This I saw in my Theatre Arts class. At first it was kind of creepy because of the masks, but other than that great play.

  • the masks actually reduce the emotional contact between audience and actor. In this day and age we should expect better use of technology to fuse the old mask technology with modern advances in acting. A triumph of art over theatre.

  • I love the chorus work between everyone and the music

  • helping me soo much thank you

  • i have to make costume and mask for school and im gonna make something close to this

  • This is frickin amazing!!! They've really tried to eliminate any anachronisms of modern theater, including female actors.

  • It somewhat loses its charm in english unfortunately...

  • Where can i get one of those masks?

  • was this recorded in 1982? thats crazy coz im studying at school, and to think i wasnt even born when it was filmed

  • Tony Harrison.. a bit late i know :)

  • which translation was used on the performance?

  • Awesome! I saw this very same clip in my "Theater Tech" class. (We still have to have basic understanding of "the arts" before we build the sets)

I want one of those creepy masks.

  • a very good hip hop theater

  • This kicks butt! So creepy, those masks!

  • This is fantastic! I had no idea they made this for television. Well done! Thanks for posting.

  • Hi pca4444 -

The production was made at/for/by the National Theatre (GB) and ran for a few months in '82/3. Channel 4 TV filmed it, hence this recording.

  • I wrote: "The production ... ran for a few months in '82/3."

    My mistake. It was '81/2.

  • the masks are creemy

  • This may be a dumb question, but is this from the Oresteia?

  • yes

  • Is that Tony Robinson (of Baldrick and TimeTeam fame) at 2'37" ?

  • that's him

  • Bachus! Evoe!

  • Is that John Hurt behind the mask of Clytemnestra? It sounds like his voice, but I'm not too sure (he also does a good drop acting like a woman, if you've ever seen I, Claudius). Just wondering.

  • I just saw the end... Philip Donaghy... could've sworn it was John Hurt though!! They sound and move so similarly. Still great either way.

  • Clytaemnestra was traditionally played by a man- thats how greek theatre was done...

  • those chorus guys talk too much crap

  • its true, dont give falldown09 "poorcomment" ratings! they DO talk crap, but its entertaining anyway (x they're old and stupid and keep changing their opinions. euripedes used them for humour too...

  • i think it is more like what many audience would be thinking. so there would be alot of different opinions. quite interesting if you think about it

  • Also if you notice, Clymestra is RIPED!!

  • damn, clymestreia is hot

  • Clytemnestra, in this production, is played by a man.

  • yes, the above info notes this. ;)

  • lol :D
