Haha, everytime I switch to the Parlimant Channel, I burst out laughing. They're all in this together. The smart ones drink it up and the hard working have to constantly ask for pocket change.
Heh, that's a good idea. Why didn't I think of that? If the honest Tam Dyell can claim thousands for his bookshelves, surely a few hundred for me isn't asking too much.
i think that the very nature of politics and power will always attract those who wish to take advantage of the public coffers.not to say that ALL 'public servants' are corrupt, but a good many of them. i hope the best for you in brittain with the elections. the general public may be upset, but we the tax payers are so busy working and keeping heads above water it's difficult to keep long accounts of the many wrongs elected officials commited during their term of office.
Our politicians have been entirely despicable with their lavish spending of our money, unfortunately I doubt this will change any time soon. On a lighter note, enjoy your barbeque :)
The problem with firing the politicians who have used public funds to fix up their own houses is that they are replaced with those whose houses still need fixing.
Sorry, but not expecting wild corrupt/immorality from a government founded from a land Empire seems quite naive to me. The US is no different, only being an economic Empire, and we get to see all the corruption if bears as well. I really don't see how one could think otherwise. Power structures are inherently corrupt, its their very nature.
well.... corruption shouldn't go unpunished though, should it?
I don't quite understand understand how they did this... did they take the money as some reward or did they just claim their house needed to look really good for the public's sake?
or what? I saw this on bbc but didn't really get it.... I should watch it again
"corruption shouldn't go unpunished though, should it?"
Here's something to ponder, if the authority is corrupt, who then is there with authority to punish the corrupt? Its sort of a circle system, like a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound if there is no one to hear it. Thus illustrating the nature of authority based power, the old "who watches the watchers" dilemma. I didn't write this all that well, I hope it makes sense.
I go with an anarchist perspective, that is, all power/authority is corrupt unless it can be proven otherwise. But it is one of those probably unsolvable dilemmas of life...
I've seen a lot of good people who are in politics here in iceland... they're mostly socialist though, so they haven't really been in power ever... until now, cause of the depression & all.... looking forward to see if they can handle it!
British politicians merely reflect society, one that delights, bays and clamours for the public humiliation of others, and demands honesty and justice from anyone but themselves. It saddens me, but Britain has become greedy and uncouth and deserves the poor reputation it has developed abroad.
Sadly what has been abused was legislation enacted by early Labor reformers to make it possible for the "ordinary man or woman" to run for office. At one time in the history of both our countries it was almost impossible for anyone other than a rich man to run for office. Some of this equalizing legislation made it possible for working people to run for office. Now generations later it is being abused. Stop the abuse but not the intent of the equalizing legislation.
I doubt Gordon Brown will call an election because he will lose a huge amount of seats.
David Cameron has dealt with the expenses row masterfully. It should be remembered that this all blew up again because the Daily Telegraph got a hold of Tory MP's expenses, yet now the focus is mostly on labour. Cameron lambasted his MPs, said they would be forced to pay back the money and he managed to turn it into labour's loss.
he has dealt with it rather well. although i hope people realise its just a pr stunt yet again.
if a election did happen, then what has cameron done to deserve to win? play a dirty game of pleasing john public, while offering up no infromation about his actual policies.
if a election did happen now, people would be voting brown out. thats not the way elections should be run.
I dunno tenneral. I agree of course that pols are generally corrupt and that this corruption knows no political party, but I find myself mostly unable to get worked up about these scandals.
When massive contracts or bailouts are "coincidentally" given to companies that you have an interest in (see Cheney& Halliburton for example) or billions are given to banks, it just makes buying suits and fixing moats to seem like small fries, don't you think?
I'd put them all on job seekers allowance till the next elections, that would get them moving. What's the most shocking is their sense of entitlement. They don't seem to understand how ordinary people live yet they determine our incomes.
I have for some time felt that politicians rank, on the moral heirarchy, just above pedophiles. Pedophiles, by the way, rank just above "pundits" on Fox "News."
I hope you enjoyed the barbecue, I just had one myself. A lovely day where I am and I would imagine where you are as well!
I hope Gordon Brown puts off the general election for as long as he can (which I imagine he would) since 1) it would put off the inevitable Tory government and 2) I might be old enough to vote!
I think it would be just hilarious if people voted in the Tories. To replace one party that has become corrupt with another that has a frankly blinding track record of scandal and corruption would be the icing on the democratic cake.
Oh, sorry, did I say "hilarious"? I meant apalling and terrifying. When people criticise MPs for having lost touch with the common person, and then vote in the Tories who have that as their central policy, it makes me want to scream.
I'm sorry but you've made a huge mistake. The expenses debacle is nothing but a distraction - stating the obvious isn't a scandal. You're missing the real scandal.
I'm currectly living in Scotland, and the general consensus amongst Scots I know seems to be that the SNP are going to remain in power, and looking crtically at their manifesto, I can't really see that as a bad thing.
Alot of the stuff on there seems very agreeable and very possible, and if they re-intergrate dentistry with the NHS, as promised, then I will personally kiss all of their collected feet. And no instituionalised racism, which is a plus for a nationalist party.
Any chance of explaining some British politics for us Americans? I'm not too informed on the recent political incidents in England, so a little info would be nice. Thanks.
Human kindness is natural, but corruption is always a influenced. No body wakes up one day and says, "Mmhh...I think I'll run for election so I can be a total ass to my fellow countryman."
The lovely thing about corruption is that it's unnatural, so if one fully realized the mind of the natural self then all corruption would cease. Of course, this isn't easy.
It is the same here. But.. here the politicians that steal, cheat and fraud, they get more votes from people who take pity on them when they have been strung up on the front pages of our newspapers.. :-(

Green LibDem and UKIP are the parties of the future.
Though, a truly gret country would have no politics at all, as it is redundant.

My politics used to be closely aligned with one of the "big three" British parties, but I think all three deserve to be boycotted by the voters.
I'll be voting GREEN in future as it's the most socially progressive of the smaller parties.

Sad to see corruption in politics is seemingly ubiquitous across the world *sigh*

Politicians are not normal people.
The ambition and drive required to achieve a seat in govt. might also be termed lust for power.
Unfortunately you must elect them before you can find out which of the two applies.
I didn't start out cynical.
That develops over time with age and experience.
