Actually Zabimaru used to be baboon with a snake tail and was a male. In a earlier Shinigami's Cup, Renji asked Hisagi(the 69 dude) what would happen if his Zanpakuto broke. Kurotsuchi appears out of nowhere and says since his Zanpakuto is a primitive sword, he could change it. After hearing this Renji got excited about how his Zanpakuto xould turn female and did. Resulting the baboon part to be female and the snake part to be separated from the baboon part. The two are now attached by chains.

I think its the Muramasa arc, I don't even know how it connects because Kubo didn't leave that much room for filler stuff to take place.

I did not read the manga at the point that mayuri suggested that so i don't know if it was in there or not, but since it occured in the after-credits comedy section of the anime, i'd assume not. that part is usually not to be taken seriously.

The sub I read said that benihime was one of only three female swords period. I can't guarantee it was properly translated of course.

The fact that urahara may not have heard of one or two female swords is insignificant.

Like you said the sub you saw could have been translated wrong. The one I saw said "few" which sounds more realistic. How could Urahara know EXACTLY how many female zanpakuto there are? Of course it's significant whether he knows that or not.

It's when a certain fact is stated early in a series and then it becomes null and void later. Bleach wasn't supposed to turn out the way it did with the Zanpakuto names. Hence the reason Rukia didn't bust out Sode no Shirayuki on the hollow that attacked Ichigo in the first episode. Kubo hadn't even planned it. Even when Benihime was revealed, Kubo still hadn't come up with the names of other zanpakuto.

If his is one of 15 or even a hundred out of all the thousands or more in soul society, then it's still clear that there are a lot of female shinigami with male swords and so the filler arc with all females carrying female swords is a massive contradiction.
