Jesse ventura is a highly dislikeable character...certainly, he bever quite had what it took to be a top line wrestler...and his attempt to make this seem like Olympic Judo or something was annoying even then...
A good match ruined by a lame ending. Never could stand Hogan's "hulking up" second wind followed by a win seconds later... :/
I also miss situations like the very end with *wrestlers* coming out to break up the fight rather than the lame-ass, generic security people or ref hordes we get these days. Made the wrestlers they were trying to get apart seem that much more powerful since they could only be stopped by a bunch of other wrestlers...
@trekfanful I don't really know. I do know that at some point he started driving semis for WWE. Don't know if he still does. He was actually a jobber before he was a referee. I think some of his matches are on youtube. I kind of like his referee style. He would yell at the wrestlers like he was some kind of psycho or something.
Andre was one of the top faces for many years. That's what made his heel turn shocking, and effective. Hogan's 1996 heel turn, while shocking, had me saying "Andre had already done this on Hogan himself."
Jessy Body Venture should really come back as announcer...he was genuinely funny on the mike. him and mcmahon.....to this day is still dont get how vince mcmahon came from behind the announcer table to become this big heel...when did that change happen...
This wouldn't work with Big Show, as Andre's only clean loss in the WWF was to Hogan up until this point, whereas Show has turned face/heel too many times plus lost too many important matches.
Something just came to me as I'm watching this i was only 12 at the time but I had to be 1 of the biggest Hulkamaniacs back then. I take everything back about John Cena and the little kids because this is his time and all the kids love him. LOL sorry Cena but I still can't stand you
Bundy got screwed twice in this match. Andre heard Hogan quit, but the stupid, imcompetent ref didn't hear it. Then, Bundy has Hogan pinned from 3:37-3:45! This would've propelled Bundymania into greatness and all the Bundymaniacs would've come out of the woodworks!
Damn that was a fun match to watch. SNME was so was the only time other than PPV that you saw top WWF stars fight other top WWF stars. Andre weakend the 2x4 so much after getting hit that it breaks the first time Hacksaw hits the ring with it outside. Or was it suppose to break on Andre?
I got a kick out of seeing Hogan rubbing his balls in Bundy's face when he was pinning him.TAKE THAT BUNDYMANIA! Jessie screaming "NO!" and then Andre "running" into the ring and then choking him down WHILE THEY WERE PLAYING HOGAN'S SONG! I loved how Andre fought off Strike Force,British Bulldogs,JunkYard Dog,Jake Roberts.Duggan's 2x4 did nothing but make him mad. This was the last time I saw Andre be Andre.
I want someone to post the end credits to this episode of SNME. Remember when they aired Phil Collins Take Me Home during those credits and you can see Hogan being helped to the back. .
Looking at this again I think to some comments Hogan made about Andre The Giant in the documentary "The UnREAL Story Of Professional Wrestling". He said that if Andre had been a mean person there would have been no one in this business but him.
Look at just how absolutely helpless and small a 6'7" 300 pound man looks in his grasp I have to agree. Andre The Giant was just a phenom to behold. Lucky for Hogan Andre was a nice person.
Basically: If Andre didn't want you to pin him, you DIDN'T pin him. Patera, who was one of the most legit strongmen ever, flat out stated that Andre had the most raw untapped potential strength of any man he had ever met and if he had applied himself, all weightlifting records would have been broken.
@mongoose704 : Yup. Vince McMahon pretty much said the same thing in that documentary. Hogan weighed better than 300 pounds and yet Andre tossed him around like a toy. Like we used to do with those Wrestling Buddies back in the day.
Man those were good old times. Whether fake or not, Those guys new how to sway the crowds with the spokesman like Jessy Body Venture. Those were the golden days of American Entertainment. Miss them whole lot.
@ObeeLektro, yeah, I like the time when Hulk Hogan started Hulking up, lol. I would like to see someone in real life do that during a fight, lol. It is sure fun to watch.
I agree, and even thou I know that this is fake in a sense that they are not fighting for real but rather as visual and effective stunts to trigger our emotional responses. This is still very dangerous sport and this people do get hurt sometimes very seriously. There was a movie about life of a wrestlers. Its very sad how much they suffer physically afterward and how their family and friends suffer along the way. Especially the ones that are on the bottom not the top of the game. Cheers
@at1212b ah the good old days.. you couldn't sleep for weeks because the next episode of Saturday Night's Main Event wasn't for months lol.. nowadays you got Raw every week.. the buildup back then was off the hook.. waiting weeks and months until the next ppv to see what would happen next
@JPThunder01 heh, exactly! And they wouldn't mention it on tv or show any clips for weeks sometime.
And also, not only wasn't it not on for months, you had no idea when it was on! Every Sat night here, at the end of the 7pm broadcast, Billy Red Lyons would sign off at the end credits, and once in a blue moon, would say 'And stay tuned for SNME'. I (I'm sure many others) can still feel the exitement of it to this day!
Now, its just way, way too predictable, going through the motions.
@at1212b LMFAO it was the same here in Ireland, you never ever knew when there'd be a Saturday Night's Main Event, for me it was when you saw it in the tv listings, cause the WWF would never advertise it beforehand. Then the highlight of my childhood was attending SNME in Worceter Mass in July 89. They just don't cut the mustard nowadays.
@JPThunder01 hahaaah me to...i was scared for hogan...laso remember how bundy broke hogans ribbs after bundy did 5 bundy splashes..hahaah ill never forget that
Even though Hulk ang Bundy are obviously power-based brawlers, this match almost had a scientific element to it. Very hard fought, a good effort by both athletes. I didn't like seeing Andre as a heel, but he made a good manager this night. And even though I was and am a Hulk fan, I was impressed with how Andre choked him out. Had to root for a fellow French guy! Lol, at what Andre did to the Bulldogs and Hacksaw's board breaking! SNME was the best!
This match had good psychology. It built up Hogan, only to bring him and the crowd down, built him up again, and brought the crowd down again with the break to assist the official. Bundy took over, only for Hogan to prevail. Plus the order of moves made sense, with Bundy spending a lot of time working on the arm, then later with repeated Avalanches and a Splash.
