I love this interview but face it, it's awkward. Conan's weirded out and his handling of Ellroy is a master class in late night talk show hosting. I like how Ellroy only tries to make things worse, but he's as socially awkward as he is witty, so lets not pretend he's in control. This interview's a combination of two guys having fun and being uncomfortable, which makes it interesting.
Ellroy was the best crime writer alive, and still is, but his American Underworld trilogy- American Tabloid, The Cold Six and Blood's A Rover- cemented his position as the best American fiction writer of his generation. His prose is unique, his vision is singular. 100 years from now, people will still be reading his work. A motherfuckin' legend.
They have great chemistry, I think. Sometimes Conan plays the crazy guy, sometimes he's the straight guy, relative to the guest, but either way, it's entertaining!
This interview is the very reason I first picked up an Ellroy novel and I have now read everything he has written. I am positively erect over his upcoming release in September.
The 3rd installment of the american underworld series comes out this fall. I think it's called Blood's a rover or something. I cant fucken wait. American Tabloid and the cold six thousand were the best things i ever read
Ellroy always killed on Conan. I love that he refuses to just be boring writer guy and instead comes barreling in with this insane pervert clown maniac persona and just takes out the whole room. You'd never know he's a brilliant writer from this interview, but you'd damn well be entertained.
Leroy Ellroy is one of the best writers out there!! He used to sweep out the drive-way better than any other little dyke, umm tyke, according to Mrs. Kryscki.(she knew him as well as anybody).

Ellroy could he be Hunter S. Thompson's long lost brother? I'd like to think so!

Thanks for posting this video. Ellroy is just a brilliant speaker. So rare for a great novelist to speak with this much super-confidence.

You think Conan could handle him at the earlier our of the night where his show is now situated?
SlasherFanMtl 2 years ago 2
Agree. Ellroy is funnier now. And I can't wait to read his memoir about women, supposed to be out in 2010.

I've just discovered Ellroy (whilst looking into LA Conf background).
I would normally dismiss him as an big arrogant a-hole....but his skill compels me to look further into his work.

@purplexy54 You better read L.A Confidential first. The story ties in directly to White Jazz.

Actually, he's always been rail thin, but for whatever reason, his face looks plump on camera in the early shows.
