The first time I heard this song I had just finished Vivien Leigh by Anne Edwards. It so fit the triangle between Leigh, her husband Leigh Holman and Laurence Olivier. It made me fall in love with Lightfoot's music, because almost all of us have had a small circle.
The 1978 version has electric guitar and three partharmony on the chorus, as well as some orchestration. First time I've heard this version- Gord just can't do a bad version.
I can't get enough of this masterpiece. Gordon Lightfoot is Canada! One of the best voices and songwriters this world has ever seen, would the rest of the world agree?
Man does this song take me back. I was 17 and and had just broken up with my first love. Never thought I'd get over her, frankly I 'm not sure I have yet; maybe I never will.
Funny, how people think that because you are teenager everything is supposed to be peachy keen. God I was so miserable during this time of my life.
this is a great song- i beleive he wrote this in 1968- during a point in his marriage when they both were cheating- he had been married for 5 yrs and two children (fred and anne) with his swedish wife britta- who he divorced in 1974
love this one by Gordon Lightfoot, he was such a great songwriter , I only wish more would have listened to his beautiful songs, and this is one of them.
Is there another song with a similar sounding chorus? It seems very similar to something else I've heard but I can't pin it down. I know cos when I heard this song first I didn't recognise the verse melody, but instantly recognised the chorus
He has another song called Circle of Steel but the melody is not the same. He rerecorded Circle is Small in the late 70s and the lyrics changed slightly. The melody was the same but the tempo was a little slower and used more "electrified instruments". It went to #33 on the charts. I like the 60s version better so I used it here.
@johnnybermo there is a 1978 version of this that he released, it used to be on here but is gone now. In my opinion, the 1978 version is so much better too, it is a shame that it is not here anymore, if anyone has it can you please put it back up?
I like both versions, really . . . but this one is a little less "pop" sounding . . . :-)

Another heartbreaker from Gordie...damn. He knows. He's been there.

Gordon wrote this back in '68 when he and his first wife, Britta, with whom he had two children, were going through a rough patch (both cheating)

@Buddawg1960 The faster tempo on this version makes it sound more urgent probably better for the pictures in this video

same song- the one you're thinking of is the more "radio friendly" countrified version from 1978- this is the original "folk" version from 1968
