  • I like both versions, really . . . but this one is a little less "pop" sounding . . . :-)

  • Another heartbreaker from Gordie...damn. He knows. He's been there.

  • Gordon wrote this back in '68 when he and his first wife, Britta, with whom he had two children, were going through a rough patch (both cheating)

  • WOW this is great!!! never heard......

  • Has there ever been a better song writing poet than Gordon Lightfoot ?

  • Beautifal Song,Great Artist, Gorden Lightfoot for ever.

If you have a whore like that drop her like rock.

  • Gordon Lightfoot,,is the best

  • can't imagine another versoin to be better

  • If anyone has the version from 1978 please post it on here Thanks

  • I got the 1978 version and this one isn't it.

  • @caldragon7 If can u post the version from 1978 many of us thank you

  • Wonderful photo montage set to a wonderful song!

  • It seems that the tempo is a little faster than I remember it back in 1978 on the album?

  • I like the other version better as well it plays much better.

  • He has so much fantastic music that this song could'nt even fit on 4 different greatest hits collections that I own.

  • The first time I heard this song I had just finished Vivien Leigh by Anne Edwards. It so fit the triangle between Leigh, her husband Leigh Holman and Laurence Olivier. It made me fall in love with Lightfoot's music, because almost all of us have had a small circle.

  • The 1978 version is a wee bit better.

  • @Albacorewing I agree with you if someone has a copy of the version from 1978 they should post it here on Youtube

  • The selection of photos for this song is outstanding

  • wasn't there a slower tempo version by Gordon?

  • yes this was the original from 1969's "back here on earth" the other that you are refering to is off 1978's "Endless wire"

  • The 1978 version has electric guitar and three partharmony on the chorus, as well as some orchestration. First time I've heard this version- Gord just can't do a bad version.

  • @Buddawg1960 The faster tempo on this version makes it sound more urgent probably better for the pictures in this video

  • This song is from 1978 & reached #33 on the chart. (U.S, Billboard)

  • @rin3guy

Actually this version is from his "Back Here On Earth" album in 1968.

  • Wonderful montage of photographs to compliment the lyrics! Speaks so profoundly to the background of the music!

  • This reminds me of Mary Jane Puckrin

  • I can't get enough of this masterpiece. Gordon Lightfoot is Canada! One of the best voices and songwriters this world has ever seen, would the rest of the world agree?

  • @WhateverUlike68 absolutely with this one.

  • Man does this song take me back. I was 17 and and had just broken up with my first love. Never thought I'd get over her, frankly I 'm not sure I have yet; maybe I never will.

Funny, how people think that because you are teenager everything is supposed to be peachy keen. God I was so miserable during this time of my life.

So glad that is in the past now.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this heart-wrenching song.

Your accompanying video makes it all the more poignant..

  • what a great song...simply timeless

  • this is a great song- i beleive he wrote this in 1968- during a point in his marriage when they both were cheating- he had been married for 5 yrs and two children (fred and anne) with his swedish wife britta- who he divorced in 1974

  • my favourite Lightfoot song (I think... there are so many, but this one can almost make me cry!)

  • Does anyone think Tiger Woods should have listened to this song???

  • I love this song

  • Classic Lightfoot!!

  • Very thoughtful selection of photos to accompany this song -- thank you!

  • love this one by Gordon Lightfoot, he was such a great songwriter , I only wish more would have listened to his beautiful songs, and this is one of them.

  • debbant,

Very nice work you've done here. You are a class act!

    BB

  • Is there another song with a similar sounding chorus? It seems very similar to something else I've heard but I can't pin it down. I know cos when I heard this song first I didn't recognise the verse melody, but instantly recognised the chorus

  • He has another song called Circle of Steel but the melody is not the same. He rerecorded Circle is Small in the late 70s and the lyrics changed slightly. The melody was the same but the tempo was a little slower and used more "electrified instruments". It went to #33 on the charts. I like the 60s version better so I used it here.

  • awesome add! do U have the other version if so, can u add it on here as well? that would be great thanks!!

  • @johnnybermo there is a 1978 version of this that he released, it used to be on here but is gone now. In my opinion, the 1978 version is so much better too, it is a shame that it is not here anymore, if anyone has it can you please put it back up?

  • same song- the one you're thinking of is the more "radio friendly" countrified version from 1978- this is the original "folk" version from 1968
