Oh my goodness! I really can't believe those are edible! I can't tell you how many I threw away not knowing! I just assumed that since it was a Philodendron, that it was poisonous. Very nice! I'll have to try one! Thanks for posting this video!
I live in Durban South Africa and have a few of these plants flowering in my garden, I have just tasted the fruit after watching this video and i love it !
Wow, i've been chopping back this plant in my garden for the past 10years & have only just been told the fruit is edible! Seriously, i'm no gardener & this plant flourishes; there's about 8 fuit at various stages of maturation. Thanks for the video.. will give it a go..
You know how the bottom of the fruit you were eating still had scales on it? Is that part safe to eat as well, or do you have to wait until those fall off naturally as well?
@bpear106 yeah it did but they were just hangin' in there about to fall off. It won't hurt you. There may still be a little tingling sensation but its ok
Hey good clip...I thought you were going to swallow the knife for a while! We are just harvesting pomegranates and they too have kernels but are significantly tart and tannic. Another genus for people chasing the fruit salad taste is Butia, which includes B yatay and B capitata...good chewed but great as jelly or liqueur
that is the "sweet corn" of the tropics. It looks great. It really takes a whole year for it to ripen? Does it stagger it's fruits so you can have more than one a year?
@GabbyT2 it will take about a year to ripen on the plant but you can speed it up by picking it and ripening it in paper wrapped up. There were about 5 more fruits and they do stagger the fruiting. Not one to produce commercially ;) haha
@Choowbz here in Queensland Australia fruit fly is supposed to be a major problem, all I had were a few ants. I've read you can pick it before its ready and wrap in newspaper/paper bag to ripen off the tree too.
Looks really good ^.^

So what you eat is between the scales and the core? Are the scales a seed of some sort?

I get a stinging mouth regardless. I'm about to give up on it. I love the taste but not the sting. It feels like an allergy.

Wow that plant is huge. Also the aroid plant in the background at the end of the video (an adult Ep. aureum perhaps ?) is just massive!

@TheFoodForest yes maybe I should have used a fork or spoon... interesting about Butia, I see it is cold tolerant down to the negatives too

I had always been put off eating this fruit due to eating it too early and ending up with a stinging mouth
Now i know to wait my turn
I wonder if it would still ripen off the plant and away from all the other things that also know when its ripe, like fruit fly?
