Is this film REALLY from 1894? According to numerous sources, the first animated cartoon is widely considered to be "Gertie the Dinosaur" from 1914. If this film is truly from 1894, then it predates "Gertie" by 20 years!
@Perlinator67 According to the description, it is a praxinoscope, so technically not a film, but it might very well be from 1894. Look it up on Wikipedia.
@Perlinator67 Actually there's "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces" from 1906 that's animated (you can watch it here on YouTube and check more info on IMDB).
Now, like @njetblaj said, the description says this is a praxinoscope.
To answer your question, the sentence written on the flag is "La représentation est terminée".
In French, it means 'the show is over". Représentation has many meanings but in this case its only meaning is "the show". You can trust me, my first language is French...
Let's remember that Reynaud throwed away all his work (in the Seine river I think) when movies appeared and got ruined: that this movie survived (that and another one) is incredible, even if in bad shape.
How weird to be watching an animation from over a hundred years ago, never would have thought anything like that existed, nevermind finding it here on you tube. Delightful.
I wish they added 5 more seconds to this to complete the fade out at the end. Then it would be perfect.

I wonder if Terry Gilliam was inspired by this.

I don't know, but it was probably added before it was released, in 1895.
theultimatekoopa2 3 years ago
that music is not contemporary with the source, surely . . . .
monkey5000 3 years ago
@theultimatekoopa2 Are you crazy? That music was added way the fuck after the movie was made. There was no damn sound editing in 1895, you mad man!

absolutely beautiful. What does the sign say at the end?
danielchance 3 years ago
I think it says
'la représentation est terminale'
Vleertouwer 3 years ago
ok, but why would it say "The representation is final"?
danielchance 3 years ago
I would translate it as "The show is over"
Vleertouwer 3 years ago
oh, that makes better sense. I translated it with babelfish, so ya. Thanks
danielchance 3 years ago
I suppose 1 could say "representation" = drawing. I.e., drawings (animation) like this are representations of life, not like actual photos.
