actually, going back to the turn of the century photos show the dancers of egypt always wearing shoes with a slight heel. golden era egyptian dancers always wore shoes. you can find clips on youtube. in modern egyptian dance, they will often kick off their shoes, but in countries like turkey and lebanon it is most common to see a dancer in shoes, usually heels.
