What a fitting song for America in 2011 we are back to the misery index of 1959 and maybe worse and I hear talk of Cut The Social Safety Net - I thought they already did that to pay the national debt which is by majic my debt now - How did that happen? For those wondering what was on the paper at 1:55, it's a free-form poem by Bob Dylan called "Alternatives to College"
Google "Bob Dylan Alternatives to College", should be the first link. It's a hilarious read.
You can see in this video the first lines of the paper, which are part of the second stanza of the poem, which reads "the witch-hunt, her left jab weakened-the flame in her arm & poor potbrain Shakespeare..." (the rest in the video is too blurry to make out).
Dylan is a complete person, he has the physical world, the spiritual world and God all in balance. He has the same spirit that his ancestor King David had inspiring his music and writings. That is the reason for his long lasting success. He is a brilliant thinker and philosopher. Pause to reflect on all his lyrics and you will be richly rewarded!
This song makes me sad. i think of this song as classic dylan, and to know that i will not get to see him in concert in the 60s (because its impossibe).is a bummer. i wanted to see him perform 'like a rolling stone' and many other of his great songs. and if i hear someone booing him i would punch them in the face. that is my dream in life.
@tamarathms tamarathms, why does the song make you sad? he sez he can take his voice anywhere he goes and with ur voice u can touch the stars. he also talks about how he got rid of that baggage from childhood. and I can assure u all the creeps that booed him got their punches in their face: the kind that keeps on hurting... and someday u might even b able2actually b there if''n'when he performs all fifty verses of "Like a Rolling Stone" 'cause that damned princess is still on the steeple.
It comes from a poem entitled "Alternatives to College" but I'm not sure if it was published. It's not a part of Tarantula, but perhaps it's in Writings and Drawings?
If you search the title and his name in google click on the first result and you can read the full version, along with some other writings by him.
@cawcaw89 thank you so much , only very occasionally are reasonable questions answered by reasonable people who know what there talking about. very useful information !
Love this sing & Dylan's young raw voice. Glad to see these songs surface & take their place in music history. Bob's life is really an open book if you start with his beginning music here & listen to every CD you get to see & hear his evolution. His music is a rare glimpse at his life & our own history. When he bled his songs bled. When our country was changing Dylan told the story. As the beat goes on & the words continue to flow so does our world & Dylan. Long live Dylan & his Tour.
The greatest American poet in my opinion. That description might not meet an academic classification, but in terms of the beauty his words have brought to so many it fits him well.
I feel sorry for anyone who can't appreciate Bob Dylan...they are missing so much.
@ChrisGuerre Oh I love Ginsberg. How can one not know love and respect him, as Dylan does himself. I think they term poet-prohet applies to both. As such, Dylan reached more people, and for me he is the greatest.
@daeliax wow, you're speaking to all my doubts about Dylan - i love poetry, and whitman, for example -- but yeah, dylan was never for me. today, though, i like him. :) i'm getting something i never did. it's pretty hardcore. "it ain't me babe" is def my favorite song. that's really heavy stuff.
@daeliax exactly man you said it... It bugs me that people cant like this man as much as i do, but all you can say is they are really missing out... Dylan means soooo much to me it cant be explained... my hero
52634 views in three months...that's just wonderful...Bob Dylan was, still is and will always be relevant in popular music and culture. Sorry for my not so good english, i'm from Tijuana, Mexico.
Calling me a nitwit is not a rational defense of Zimmerman's music. I am not the subject of this conversation. Can you understand that ? Bob Dylan's music is not moving because it is unambitious from a content point of view, not compelling musically, and is sung without skill or talent. "Lay lady lay, lay across my big brass bed" absolute shit....
@dbetsa I'm pretty sure his point was that if you don't like Bob Dylan, it's you that there's something wrong with. Not Bob Dylan, nor his fans. Also, you saying to lawlbiker that his anger is evidence off his self-doubt and all that shit, in the same post that you say that Dylan is the subject of the conversation, just makes you an enormous hypocrit. And your need to come here and write derogatory comments to others is obviously a sign of your own insecurity. Do return to your Nickelback video.
I'm completely sure that I never said I didn't like Robert Zimmerman. I pointed out the weaknesses in his so called music. That is the subject of my comment, his music. Why can't you address that? Changing the subject is not a rational defence of Dylans music, but an admonition that I am correct. Are you even able to understand what the subject of the comment is? Do return to sixth grade....
Then why have you been trying, albeit, failing, to defend it? And by attacking me, no less? Did you grow up playing violent video games? Is that why you are compelled to attack someone that doubts one or your cultural dogmas?
@dbetsa Dude, we just want to listen to the music and hear what other people with similar taste think about it. If you want a disussion with good, sensible arguments, please do not come on youtube and say that Bob Dylan sucks. Ok?
True Bob Dylan is not a "great" musician. But he is a great artist. I would say it's probably your inability to see the difference that makes you look down on his work. You say his songs are "absolute shit"? good it would be no problem for you to write a better song then. I'll wait.... @dbetsa
@dbetsa when youre a famous singer with a bad voice, and one of the most recognized artists in the world for 50 years, then what you say about dylan will be correct.
@dbetsa haha i would really love to hear what the fuck you listen too then. Bob Dylan is one of the best out there. You have no fucking taste in music its not just about the voice its about the music itself. Why dont you open your eyes and realize your a dumb piece of shit that just criticizes music just because its not like everything else. Bob may have a "different" voice but its UNIQUE. So do us all a favor and fuck off.
Actually, if I was wrong about Dylan then there would be no reason for you to be angry. Your anger is evidence of your self doubt, and, that, contrary to the years of brainwashing that you have endured, Dylan, does, in fact, suck. And why are you critisizing me? We are talking about Dylan. He is the subject here. Not me. Why don't you get an education?
@dbetsa the reason the kid doesn't like bob dylan is either because he can't appreciate acoustic or older music, or he doesn't do drugs. To say bob dylan sucks is just ignorant, I bet you think the Beatles suck too. Listen to bob dylans hurricane.
The name "Bob Dylan" is not his real name. He was born as Robert Allen Zimmerman (Hebrew name Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham)[ in St. Mary's Hospital on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota.
@dbetsa maybe those are the reasons why people from the sixties call him THE VOICE OF A GENERATION!!! And let's not forget that people form the sixties are the one who have influenced all of the music we hear today! So, let's suppose for an instant he can's write, sing or play the guitar...hey, hey, I guess he must be doin' something fine!!!
Please just watch something you actually enjoy rather than reprimanding others for listening to something that fills them with joy, you masochist. If you hate it, watch something else.
SO SAD THAT ALL OF THE GREAT VIDEOS OF DYLAN ARE GONE OFF YOU TUBE--ENJOYED THEM SO MUCH! SONY CORP'S DAYS ARE NUMBERED THOUGH---THEIR DINOSAUR BONES WILL SOON BE GROUND INTO THE DUST BUT THE MUSIC LIVES ON! TIME THAT WE ALL SUPPORTED THE ARTISTS DIRECTLY AND NOT THESE SOULRSS, THIEVING CORPORATIONS.
@JellyrollHorton don't worry! Is an unrealeased song! It comes in the album form the demos that took him to the record studios! Some of the songs in that album didn't get realeased! So, they're new to our ears! You can still say you know something about Mr. Zimmerman, =D
We're starting up channel to help us get real music, like Dylan, back. There are still a lot of great bands out there, but the music industry doesn't give them any attention. We'll try to do that. Our plan is to gain subscribers, and once a week upload a song by a new band or artist. This way we'll keep you updated and informed about new, good music. Please subscribe, or send us a demo.
"You can't choose what music you like best, when all you know is shit"
i think people try to read to deep into dylan. after watching documentaries about him, listening to people talk about him who knew him in his early days and reading his memoir, i realized that he was simply a kid who fell deep into this folk scene and tried to emulate what these older artists were doing. he wasn't some sort of prophet. but i think the more i bring him down from the immortal figure on a pedestal and down to my level, my love for his music evolves and grows.
I know it's cliche to talk about but I just don't see where the transition went from meaningful songs from artists like Bob to a world of autotuned trash with Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.
He never fails to keep a smile on my face and joy in my heart- and often a laugh bubbling up or a big sigh of tenderness, empathy, compassion for him and wonder at the depth of his humanity/recognition/ of the human condition- the voice of places we've been or will damn well pass through at some point.
as @rachelhighway61 said so beautifully "This man puts me in a state of mind that even I can't understand."
@ohmercy & @rachelhighway61 . i don't understand it with my brain either. but in my blood, i totally get it. omigod, a friend of mine's cousin is interviewing him this weekend & doesn't know what to ask so i gave her a few questions...it was so thrilling to think of what to ask him that everyone else hasn't already asked...
Very interesting this...the performance still sounds better than most people who post their songs on yt after years of writing, even if those older people have written better songs than this...he seems to have studied his performance skills before the flowering of his own writing.
Man where did this come from? You have to keep looking to the hidden past to find revelations such as this. Open up the treasure troves and let us feast our ears and imaginations on these sayings and tunes.
"Many times I've bended, but I ain't never yet bowed"- love this song.
And please, please, (at least) post many more official videos. I'm a nineteen year old kid who managed to scrape enough to buy nearly every released Dylan album in the past two years- I would never have listened to more than my greatest hits album if it hadn't been for what I could find to whet my appetite on youtube.
Bob is a man that heard the stylings of Woody Guthrie and carried them on after Woody became to ill to work and because of that the world is a lot richer.
I'm fifteen years old, and its always been my life's wish to meet dylan. where music is now is incredibly sad. the way i picture him in my mind is almost super human. oh what i would give for him to shake his hand or for him to read some of my music... but i can keep dreamin i suppose.
@rachelhighway61 thats because bob started writing and singing when he was young and life seemed to have a hope and spark, he thought that the youth of america could make a change against the corporate machine that seemed to be unstoppable.. then JFK was shot, and bob realized the futility of the fight.. hence the song Mr. Tambourine man. bob dylan is a sad beautiful man, and i think he represents our struggle in these times very well.

I've never heard this song before, and I thought I knew something about Dylan. He never ceases to amaze.
JellyrollHorton 1 year ago
@JellyrollHorton don't worry! Is an unrealeased song! It comes in the album form the demos that took him to the record studios! Some of the songs in that album didn't get realeased! So, they're new to our ears! You can still say you know something about Mr. Zimmerman, =D

Hi!
"You can't choose what music you like best, when all you know is shit"
thank you

Bob Dylan is genius in that he gets so many people to make every lyric something to decode, obsess, and create a story behind......
When all his work is a story already, with a beginning middle and end without a need to interpret.

i think people try to read to deep into dylan. after watching documentaries about him, listening to people talk about him who knew him in his early days and reading his memoir, i realized that he was simply a kid who fell deep into this folk scene and tried to emulate what these older artists were doing. he wasn't some sort of prophet. but i think the more i bring him down from the immortal figure on a pedestal and down to my level, my love for his music evolves and grows.

To be listened to with "Ain't got no/I got life" - Nina Simone

I do love Bob Dylan - on the other hand I can't quite listen to him the same way after the Simon Pegg parody of him (check it out on YT)

I know it's cliche to talk about but I just don't see where the transition went from meaningful songs from artists like Bob to a world of autotuned trash with Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.

He never fails to keep a smile on my face and joy in my heart- and often a laugh bubbling up or a big sigh of tenderness, empathy, compassion for him and wonder at the depth of his humanity/recognition/ of the human condition- the voice of places we've been or will damn well pass through at some point.
as @rachelhighway61 said so beautifully "This man puts me in a state of mind that even I can't understand."
ohmercy 1 year ago 2

Thank You

I'm fifteen years old, and its always been my life's wish to meet dylan. where music is now is incredibly sad. the way i picture him in my mind is almost super human. oh what i would give for him to shake his hand or for him to read some of my music... but i can keep dreamin i suppose.

wish me luck! Actually just starting a blog about it. I should list it on my profile page here.

@rachelhighway61 I think it was Joan Baez who said about him, not everyone gets him, but the ones that do, REALLY get him
firestartertwistedfi 1 year ago 4
@rachelhighway61 thats because bob started writing and singing when he was young and life seemed to have a hope and spark, he thought that the youth of america could make a change against the corporate machine that seemed to be unstoppable.. then JFK was shot, and bob realized the futility of the fight.. hence the song Mr. Tambourine man. bob dylan is a sad beautiful man, and i think he represents our struggle in these times very well.
