nice instruction, very clear and helpful. Just one thing, I don't think it is at all unconventional, to change your own oil. I'm not a fan of paying someone to work on my vehicles though.
@96driver thank you i say unconventional way for reasons one will picko n you did not torqe or typed wrong. if one learned, from the clip. it is the best feeling in the world. and tht is all that matters. sharing , showing and caring.
That's a sweet, helpful video. My brother Doug will rest easier knowing how to change this filter out in his awesome 2012 Corolla. I can't believe I found this, somebody must be watching over me.
Thanks for the video. I'm with MegaVanfan. New to the filter cartridge change game. The manual says 5W-20 or 0W-20 will work. However, I've only been able to find the 0W-20 in a full synthetic. Anyhow, after the ToyotaCare service period expires I'll likely go with a synthetic 0W-20 and 10K between oil changes. The wife racks up the miles pretty fast. Fram has XG 10K filters, but none for this puny little cartridge filter. Sigh, it looks like I'll be stuck changing this filter every 5K.
@Skeeball10 Every 10K we do its a leased, if it was not I change with respect a little earlier. for the paper filter costing not muc. I wonder one day will tehy enforce a cut off to gain access to the filter, and not let the oil flow, when you open her up to replace, allowing filter only changes
Toyota does not recommend 0W20 synthetic it does recommened 0W20 though They did the oil changes on mine for 1st 30000 miles and there filter is as cheap as aftermarket FRame ones but I have found only Mobil 1 sells the 0W20 at walmart
I noticed that you are using a factory-original filter, but are using 5W30 conventional oil instead of the recommended 0W20 synthetic. Was this video made before Fram started selling CH10358? I've got to do the oil on my girlfriend's 2011 and will probably use the 0W20 Mobil 1 that Walmart sells for $29.00 (5 quarts.) They also sell the Fram filter. Ironically, the aftermarket Toyota paper cartridge filter costs MORE than the PF47 AC Delco original spin-on filter at Walmart. Go figure.
@TheMortallyWounded I am postive that hte car uses the oil I supplied, may possably be different I am no pro and may made a mistake, can only confirm in spring time. the factory filter rus 5.00 so why not get hold of some.
Years ago, the automotive industry made this revolutionary change to spin-on, preloaded filter assemblies. This made it easier for DIYers to change their own oil and save money. Now, manufacturers are going back to cartridge filters to save the planet, allowing oil to spill out all over the ground. What a mess. Thank you, Chevrolet, for putting your cartridge filters under the hood in a manner that allows you to change the filter without spilling a drop. Silly Toyautos.
thanks for the vid, i was having a hard time figuring out how to get that dang thing off without breaking it.... at 05:15 you say to remove the O-ring, then right after that you put the plastic cap back on the filter housing. You missed the part about putting the NEW O-ring back on the cap. There are people out there who will follow this video exactly, and they will have a lot of oil on the ground if they do that. So put the New O-ring on before you put the cap on.
@extremediyer It is not messy at all, it is a cleaner method. the filter slides right out and yes it becomes quite expensive if you break the plastic 100.00 but hte filter cost 5.00 at toyota. I agree with you on your opinion but we do noyt build the car
@fishycomics With the canister, all you do is spinning it on. There is no need to remove the cartridge and mess with the O-rings. As to why cartridge is more expensive in general even with less material. That's a mystery.
@extremediyer I am sure you would not transfer old stuff back on with the ne filter of an olderstyle. its supposed to improve the imviorment, makingthe car greener? Lol. one less metal wasted. per car per how many Billions, that is a lot of savings if you ask me.
@fishycomics I change the metal can once a year. That's nothing compared to vehicle emission. If you want a greener car, buy an electric. That would do much more good.
@whitebathroomguy Immigrant , local recycle picker, every day they come and pick up the plastics, and they cash in on your recycles. they live a few blocks away, nope not Homeless. They walk with the family as well nice try though.
@ronie012 Sweet. it's punchy for a compact, but very uncomftable ride , older corollas have a much better interior for comfort. I should do a review on that ha ha ha
@evgheniiCP 1 With th Oil filter cover you take off, the O-Ring is on that , and take it off, Replace what you just taken off in the kit you purchased, the Paper filter, washer, O-ring. The Outer f ilter cost near 100.00 give or take. while the kit cost under 10 You replace the O-ring that comes off the canister that stays with the car. it is only replacable when you break it.
at 4:00 im having a hard time removing that bracket. I dont really see a tab i can pull back at 2:40 . it seems to be stuck nomatter how strong i try to loosen it up with the socket and ratchet. anyone have a solution?
The Honda wrench will cost you an arm and a leg. Go to an auto parts store and buy a number 5 cap wrench. Hacksaw half inch off the bottom because it's too deep. It may be slightly loose, if so one loop of friction tape around the canister will fix it.
Pro-tip: Remove the oil filter first and the drain plug second. That way, the oil streaming out of the drain plug does not get in the way, and while the oil pan is draining, you'll have time to change the filter element and o-ring.
Thankfully, the filter and plug on these 2ZR engines are very close together, one of the few engines where were you can have both the filter and the plug out without having to use a super wide pan and making a mess.
@ELLOKO914 no, that is the most important part. I should have asked at the dealer. to be careful. the Plastic canister is very very expensive over a C-note (100.00) to be safe , to call and post here. tighten by hand, then up to a 1/4 turn by tool. rule of thumb. takes a lot to crush the O-ring
@living4fire I have done that for the toyota 2007, and its just as simple as doing a oil change, nothing to it, find the tranny plug drain and fill. I shall keep in mind.
Awesome job, have been waiting to see someone post a DIY oil change job on the 2010 Corolla 1.8. Thank you so much. You do an awesome job on your instructional videos, keep them up. Thanks again.
@living4fire Off hand no, the actual one cost over 40.00, I used one I already own that fits the Honda Crv. always use Genuin parts not aftermarkets with the filer. . suggest toyota parts.
Great Video! Very Helpful. Wow! The old oil looks real clean while being drained out. How often do you change your oil? My engine oil looks black when I change it at 4000 miles on my 2005 Corolla.

@fishycomics - Ahhh! so that explains the clean looking oil. I have agree with you on the 10k oil change interval, Toyota has got rocks in their head on that idea. Doesn't Toyota remember all the "sludge suits" against them? Thanks for the reply. I hope you post the oil change for the 2008 on Youtube.
I appreciate this video, getting oil changed at the dealer is ~$70, which is ridiculous. I have changed oil before, but have never dealt with a canister filter. This video was very helpful and the angle was fine.
