Miguel, I enjoy watching your video as much as I enjoy listening to the song on CD. When I first heard Gates of Delerium, I didn't like it at all. But over time I grew to enjoy it and it is now one of my favorite songs. Thank you so much for sharing your work with us.
Miguel you are so good at playing Chris Squire. I have been trying for years, but you actually nail it man. I would love to see you do Sound Chaser and The Fish Live from Yessongs. Nobody else on Planet Earth will attempt that one. Rand.
Exquisite cover. Probably THE most difficult of all Squire's lines, but one of the most satisfying to listen to. This section could not be played any other way - you can't change a single note or the Gates wouldn't work. Squire said he picked up the bass because it had only 4 strings and must be easier to play. The two of you blow that therory right out the window!
I've never seen anyone pull that off. Has to be the toughest bass cover ever in that ridiculous middle section. Almost atonal at points and so hard to cop, considering all of the other crazy riffing going on with Howe and Moraz.
This whole section was always my favourite pieces of music they ever composed, and it makes Relayer one of my Top 5 yes albums (Relayer / Drama / Time and a Word / Big Generator / 90125) -- this bassline is SICK!!!!! Amazing interpretation of it, and once again makes me appreciate the person who came up with this sick stuff, and the people who think he's great for being so sick! You're a great player :)
wow, you are truly amazing and i love your dedication to my favorite band. love love love this version of GOD, brings back so many fantastic memories of the winter of 1980/81 when it was released.
Amazing job, Miguel. And you're right: after playing Squire's stuff for a while you start to pick up patterns and habits to the point to where you can almost predict when he'll do something like play a harmonic line vs. the melody or do an octave jump -- that sort of thing. He also incorporates a lot of chromatic melodies and scales into his playing, something he and Steve Howe have in common and part of what gave classic Yes it's musical shape.
I really dig the songs you selected to play. I've followed YES from the beginning and saw them a quite a few times but now I get to watch how these great songs are played in such detail. It's better than a concert.....

I have commented on earlier posts and I have to say this is virtuoso playing. You nailed it as you always do. The video (once again) highlights how complex Squire's parts (especially from that era) are.
Very nice! I'm learning this song myself right now, you did a great job. Good call on the Yesshows live version, I like it way better than the studio version. Cheers!
@PottiePete I understand you - especially the studio GoD is not easy to listen to. That's why I always preferred Yesshows' version. It was this version that led me to insist on Relayer at the time. Thanks!
Wow, just wow. You version is what I have always wanted to see/hear: the bass part more up front and a visual. do you think CS knows about you? Ever thought about doing Sound Chaser?
@javon7065 I had the honour of speaking with Chris a couple of times. Thanks for watching my clips - I hope I'll still be in time to play SC in this life ;)
Watching this reminds me of something I heard about Yes- something to the affect of 5 guys all soloing but somehow it comes out sounding great. Awesome- job- brings back great memories. Relayer is probably my favorite album.
@miguelbass - Rick Wakeman used to promote the idea that Yes could just carry on. I love all the Yes members, but when it's time, wouldn't it be cool if they did keep it going with new people? I understand the last tour had a different singer and keyboard player. Fantastic! Not to lose Anderson or Wakeman, just that the band members don't think that we will only go watch certain people.
So with that in mind, its nice to know there are people who are dedicated to learning the parts.
Stunning! A real tribute Chris Squire's (and your) talents. As you note Miguel, among other things it's really good to see this particular section of Gates "separated out".
Thank you for your time and interpretations......you make it so much easier to learn and practice these pieces.....especially for me, since I don't hear as well as I used to! Gracias!
My older brother bought a Gibson Ripper & practiced this endlessly when we were teenagers. He never tried the live version. I have got to show him your work!!! He was a Chris Squire fanatic. I crazy about Wakeman. And Bruford. And Squire. And Howe. And Anderson. And Kaye. ANd Moratz. And Offord. & Alan. Still wondering about Peter Banks?
Best Yes song in my opinion. You play so well. I'm jealous. Chris Squire is my idol. Parallels is another favorite of mine. I love your taste in Yes music. I love lots of progressive rock but Yes is my favorite by far. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy watching you pound out those songs.
@Frick73 Thanks ... I adore Parallels too... both these songs sound explosive on Yessongs.... Along with GftO and Ritual... they make such a great live album!
Do you only watch at videos ,or have you got some tabs, too?
By the way ,both are good for approaching the original...you`re quite right on your dividing the song in sesions, ja,ja...
My problem is not the fingers, but my back, that aches a lot...I`ve got an hernia...but, I love so much playing, that I forget about it at the time...
@flavy1000 You make nice questions for a faq :)) You know some songs have no video footage. Sometimes I have to research for one passage and I hear the album , live versions, bootlegs... whatever I can find to get some more info... I call it "soundchasing" ;)
i love so much you bass aproach and feel...your technique is amazing!!! 5\5** congrats, that progressive sound just is 100 my style i love it, sounds a bit to genisis, frank zappa, yes..and so much more, congrats
Not sure with one are you from the duo, my friend. I did sense some of your influences you mentioned on your own work. But you keep it always original by yourselves. Love your music! Thank you!
Wow...i love it when take downs are exact!!! I saw Yes play Relayer at the Hollywood Bowl when the Album came out! Giant Mushrooms and all. Will always be nuts for the Slow acidie ride out with Patricks incredible Synth playing. Thanks Man.
Well I guess I can if I try... it's just that Chris is my favourite musician.. a matter of choice.. and I'd like to do my own stuff as well. But I put that possibility cause I like other bassists as well. Thanks and Merry Xmas!
"Gates" and "i" were definitely an education for me, as well, with Moraz. I had grown up on Wakeman, who rarely fooled with the pitch and modulation wheels on his Minimoogs. Then, as i was learning wheel technique on my Mini by listening to/playing along with Jan Hammer (Spectrum, and, about this same time, Oh,Yeah?), here comes Moraz the Mad Swiss Wheelman !!! The learning curve just got steeper !!! (really nice guy, too ! ) Great bass line @ 2:07. Awesome, as usual. Peace :-)
Wow, thanks for sharing this piece of musical history... I agree Moraz uses that pitch wheel with great virtuosity and feel... a thing of his own. Merry Xmas!
You 're a really hard worker, Miguel! Le haz hecho justicia a una de las más impresionantes líneas de bajo del rock de todos los tiempos. Felicitaciones desde Argentina. Abraço!
Simply Espectacular !! You are great my friend. I have one question: How can you hear the bass line with that precision? Even cd´s are not so clear in their sound.
Only with this demonstration i can understand better the work of Chris.
Well it's practice of repeated listening as a big Yes fan... and then listening basslines in general. I would say it can be painful but it's always a pleasure. Glad I helped to shed some light, and even if it's impossible to get all notes right, to get more friends to hear to Chris' playing. Gracias!
@miguelbass emptheremin brings up a great point, I cannot hear many of the "fills" and extras, though some I can now "hear" looking at you playing -- but not all. I guess if you mixed the original in any louder it would be difficult to hear your playing. Cool, very cool. Thanks.
Miguel, Great job! This section of this song, in my opinion, is the most complex and hair raising bass line in the entire Yes catalog. Can't wait for part 3! Wes
Hello my friend, looks like someday you will be enjoying some Yes along with Bulgarian music :)) Seriously it's very nice that you're listening to my other kinds of playing. Thank you so much!
You never cease to amaze me Miguel. I hope Chris Squire has seen you, have you ever heard from him?
Funny story, he hit on my sister on the Big Generator tour when she asked for an autograph ("I'll give you one back at the hotel!"). I think he was showing off for Trevor Rabin who was standing there too. I can't stay mad though, he's my hero since '75. In fact maybe she should have gone for it--who knows, he might have ended up being my brother-in-law, or at least my nephew-daddy! :)
I had the chance to see him a couple of times after gigs in the UK around the early decade. Perception of time changes to another dimensions on moments like those... as you certainly know! That's a very cool story - thanks for sharing with us :)))
Wow, very well done! I've been listening to the '76 Roosevelt Stadium version of this piece lately, and I always focus on the bass. If you can play this, you can play just about anything.
Thanks Guy! Bass pedals will appear on the intro , I am trying to find out where else (?)... maybe the ending? All recordings available "forgot" to mix them in...
Chris didn't took it of either, that's enough for me. It will influence your playing, whether it's your hand technique or the electronics/magnetics. Thanks for writing!
Bloody brilliant! Well done.

Wow. Amazing. Chris Squire rules.
And how is it possible to pick this?

Hi - you mean to "extract" the bassline or the picking technique? Thanks for your words... Chris rules!

Wow, very well done! I've been listening to the '76 Roosevelt Stadium version of this piece lately, and I always focus on the bass. If you can play this, you can play just about anything.

This song is one of my absolute favorite songs thanks Chris for his great bass lines/playing. You playing this song is just as great!

Thanks Guy! Bass pedals will appear on the intro , I am trying to find out where else (?)... maybe the ending? All recordings available "forgot" to mix them in...
miguelbass 2 years ago
I think I saw Chris use them on one of my YES DVD's, I'll look into it.

Nice.
Still got that funny guard on the ricky, I took mine off in 1978
Cheers Dale

Chris didn't took it of either, that's enough for me. It will influence your playing, whether it's your hand technique or the electronics/magnetics. Thanks for writing!

Doubt I'll here another cover for this song on any instrument for a long time, if ever
