  • yes

  • This is the proof that playing lots of notes is not the only (&best) way to groove. LONG LIVE THE BASS!!

  • old school iphone case on the his trumpet

  • How to build a sound? That is the question...

  • I met Al Foster the drummer in Paris last summer playing at the sunset jazz bar with a few friends, it was amazing and hes swing is amazing

  • @onlyjoetee lol im 16 years old i made a youtube acount jst so i could tel u how much of a twat u r im pretty sure after reading your comments i no more about music then you do,slap is a technique and style, like tapping on a guitar or plucking a violin, these comments just show how fucking ignorant you are,no doubt u r one of the other 3 billion other guitarist in the world who thinks they know shit about bass guitar, if u dnt like slap bass then dnt watch marcus miller

  • why the hell are some comments made? enjoy the music and the skills done on a bass guitar, damn man!! .

  • @2653239 Dig!

  • Saw MM play with Miles in 83, Printempts de Bourges.

Anecdote: Marcus bust a string mid solo and the most enormous roadie came on and put on a fresh one mid-solo.

What a night that was. Davis had his back to the audience for the 1st 30 minutes, then turned round, lowered his shades, checked out the crowd then played the most blistering solo with one hand on his horn and the other on a keyboard.

They played a 2 hour set with no breaks then just walked off. Place went mental but no encore!

  • @moosey62 I wish I could have seen that!

  • why the fuck do the stick a huge piece of metal across the exact part of the bass where your hand needs to be playing??Which stupid arsehole's idea was that design!!!

  • @onlyjoetee To be honest, it actualy helps you play certain styles. Marcus manages pretty well with it....

I put one on my bass and use it for gigs often, they not only look great (if you like vintage style) but for slap etc, you get a suport without deadning the notes.

It is all taste though friend.

  • @toby2790 1 he would manage much better without that big clump of shit in the middle of it 2 they DO NOT look great AT ALL!! its like walking around with a fucking surgical mask on your face LOL 3 Slap is the fucking worst thing you can do on a bass,SLAP thats what every bass player who does it deserves LOL!! hahahaha

  • @onlyjoetee LOL i am sorry you feel that way, i do not want to argue on opinions but comon lol, so Marcus needs a slap? and Flea? and Stanley Clarke? and Vic Wooten? You surley cannot believe that these men can't play....

As for looks once again, opinion, some people like the look, some don't, is no right or wrong, but with the slap thing are you a bass player? If so i hinestly suggest giving it a chance, it will make you a better all round player.

  • @toby2790 a bass is called a BASS for a reason..its not called a Treble..is it...

i am convinced, that the person who decided to put that big metal piece of shit there, actually envied and perhaps even hated bass players and wanted to ridicule them...AND THEY BOUGHT IT!! hahahahahaha

  • @onlyjoetee So a Bass player has to play root notes and thats it?

Slap Bass is used primarily in BASS driven music, alot of gospel, soul, funk and disco use it, it is hardly "treble" I understand you have your opinion on the metal, but surely you can't think that your opinion counts for every Bass player on the planet!

  • @toby2790 well my opinion is just an opinion, but its good.Slap sucks man. What we want from a bass is BASS,thats all..

  • @onlyjoetee And what the fuck do you know about music? That's like saying boxers should only throw right hooks. Go learn how to play an instrument before you spout off some bullshit "opinion" like that. That has to be the most ignorant and un-knowledgeable fucking thing I have ever read. Wow... Just fucking wow!

  • @possm88 i play several instrumenets actually, and each one has its job and function.Miller is a jazz musician i am a rock musician,i guess there's our difference. In jazz, every instrument is a soloist, not so in rock and roll, definitely not the bass!!

  • @onlyjoetee That's funny because I play bass in a rock band and have for the last 7 years and I AM the soloist in the band. You must be one miserable bastard to be so close-minded and try to call yourself a musician. I can tell just by the language you use that you are a fucking hack-job and can't play for shit. The bass has been a "Rock" solo instrument since 1965 when John Entwistle played the 1st bass solo on "My Generation". So maybe you need to shut the fuck up and learn your music history.

  • @onlyjoetee This isn't the 19th century. Instruments aren't slaves to a specific duty like you think. That's what started Rock and all modern music. The urge of versatility and creativity. You strip away all creative power when you try to simplify an instruments role. That is the polar opposite of creativity. You are a fucking joke to anyone who is a REAL musician. I just showed my band-mates your ignorant comment and they laughed their asses off at your utter stupidity. Fucking HACK!!!!!

  • @onlyjoetee List of "Rock" bands with solo bassists:

The Who, Sly and the Family Stone, Rush, Yes, Allman Brothers, Beatles, Jeff Beck, Blind Melon, Blues Traveler, Santanna, DMB, Foghat, Gov't Mule, Grand Funk, Grateful Dead, Hendrix, Kansas, Metallica, Moe., Phish, Primus, Rage, RHCP, Spin Doctors, Funk Brothers, King Crimson, Cream, Black Sabbath, Queen, Tower of Power, Deep Purple, Genesis, The Meters, The Police, Earth Wind &Fire, Mr. Big, War, Zappa........ Need I say more, Mr. Dumbfuck?

  • @onlyjoetee Sometimes it's better to find out yourself than talking trash.. Anyway.. Pickup covers were invented to reduce the hum when the pickups are solo'ed.. Turns out it didn't (still aint) and it became a fashion. Neck pickup cover helps when slapping.

  • @terrykumar it doesnt do a damn thing, its just an ugly useless piece of crap that some damn fool decided to stick on there for nothing.slap bass is about the worst damn thing you can do with a bass,i grew up in the 80s when slap was fashionable, hated it!!!!

  • @onlyjoetee Well yeah, what you said not gonna change anything though.

  • @terrykumar well maybe not,but i mean just look at the picture of him playing?how the hell can that huge piece of metal stuck there possibly help in any way??its the dumest idea ever...hahahahahaha

  • @onlyjoetee It's called a pickup cover. It covers the pickups. Bassists (and drummers) set up the groove for the guitarist. Slap is a difficult technique that Mister Miller has mastered. You are full of dumb shit. Shut the fuck up.

  • @robertcuthbert covers the pickups for what?do you even play misic?fuck off man

  • @onlyjoetee

Yeah I'm a bassist. But I play "music" not "misic". You are just a dumbfuck, prepare to get schooled:

  • @onlyjoeteeWhen Leo Fender designed his first electric bass he put a chrome cover over the pickup and the bridge for multiple reasons.

    A. He thought the cover over the PUP would provide some electrical shielding (it's too open to do any good there, but that was one reason- early Precision had a wire going to the cover even).

    B. The original P bass PUP was pretty open with the coils subject to damage, so the chrome cover would protect the PUP.

  • @onlyjoetee

    C. He thought the instrument would be played with the thumb, like the way Wes Montgomery played guitar (his brother Monk was an early user of the Fender bass, and did play it that way too). The tug-bar was under the strings to help with this. You'd wrap your finger tips under the tug-bar, rest your palm on the PUP cover, and the thumb would lay on the strings.

    D. The bridge cover had a foam mute that knocked down the sustain, and helped the bass emulate the double bass.

  • Al Foster and Marcus sounded great together. I saw this band at Berkley, CA in '82. They were burning it and Miles sounded great that night.

  • I LOVE mp3iffy it WORKS just google mp3iffy.

  • 1:50. Beautiful simple phrase leading out of the solo. Beautiful.

  • brilliant..........

  • Yep Gig 1985, '86 and '87 NorthSeaJazz Live Tuin Paviljoen, thankx Maestro Miles.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Marcus had got "M" under the bass strings here, these players are so nice.

I wish I could see all of them again...oneday

  • DOPE!

Too bad people make dumb comments.

    Thank you for sharing!

Miles is like a cool Mozart, EVERYTHING he did was DOPE!

  • i think so. i think you don't like the "childish" way of his playing. but it's for purpose - this song was written for Jean Pierre - little son of his wife.

  • I suppose thats it. I have the much more recent version of Marcus Miller playing it on his album and I love it. He just seems to be going for poor tone quality on purpose, which I guess is the intent, its just not for me

  • well also, Just recently, if I remember correctly from a documentary of him I watched, he just went through a 5 year period in which he was just sick and suffering from just life in general and he temporarily became a recluse and put down his horn. that could be part of it and here he's trying to get back in full swing. but I still like this vid of him, i donno, it's all preference i guess

  • funk dat

  • Only 22-23 years had Marcus here.

Got great influence from Jaco like all players in that time.

  • and you really can hear his influence here in Marcus Millers finger style

  • what is marcus wearing?? lol

  • Marcus is simply an amazing bassplayer!

  • Música de verdad

  • WOW!!

  • I love that classic "smile at miles" moment at 0:38 that Marcus has in every video. Its almost reminds me a lil kid rambunctiously doing something wrong but waiting to see if his parent is watching lol

  • tasty stuff
