The song is about two lovers from East & West Berlin who met in the shadow of Checkpoint Charlie on the Berlin Wall, within site of the studios where Iggy Pop and David Bowie were recording. The word 'hero' has been co-opted for political ends. So the logic goes, all soldiers are 'heroes', but that makes any objective statement or - God forbid - criticism of a 'hero' well nigh impossible. I know how difficult it can be out there, since my two big brothers have just been deployed to Afganistan again(i've lost count of how many times they've gone on tour now and i always worry for them)and they always say how much they miss home. They're part of the reason I want to do something meaningful with my life so just wanted to say I have a lot of respect for what you guys do.
