so none of you know that he came to Sligo, Eire, 2 weeks before, we played, and I recorded it...so, the last ever live recordings of Nikki...doing what he did best, improvising over a tune he wrote way back when...he was wearing his long black cape that night, and a red scarf...we played to an audience of 5, growing to 10..he didn't care...still made his magic and stole 11 hearts....
Another great singer songwriter who died too early. I would have liked to see him live and The Jewel Thief is one of the most overlooked albums released in 1991!
I saw his last show at the knitting factory. Didnt even know who he was, went for the Gossip and fucking hated it so I went into the bar in the basement, Sudden was playing. He died that very night.
@televisionlighter - yep, playing with Alan Merrill, who wrote 'I Love Rock'n'Roll' - Nikki having fun with a borrowed Fender. The vid of that is maturing in my vault - I will get around to posting it one day soon.
@televisionlighter - i hapenned to be in nyc that night, and i too went to knitting factory (had been to see psych furs singer r butler earlier in canal st). i too saw start of gossip..then realised nikki must be playing in another room,. went upstairs and caught his gig. excellent . evan dando guesting on guitar. .. nice.. rip nikki.
I got to see Nikki once...at the second last show he ever played. I asked him if he could play "Elizabethan Balladeer" but he said he couldn't rememeber all the words. He was so kind and polite. He told me he'd seen T. Rex over twenty times yet he'd never seen the Faces. I would have loved to have gotten to know him and play him the song I wrote that this song inspired.
A friend called me at work to tell me the news of his passing. I couldn't believe it. I still can't...
i met Nikki twice. once in london 82 (at Mike Scotts pad) - and then i saw him by chance in NYC march 05 playing live and met him afterwards for a 2nd time. Funny thing was he remembered me from all those years ago. Chilled me thoroughly when i found out he had died that same night...
A Great guy. Lived his life by his rules. A true rock n roller/punkster.. untainted.
nikki was really one of not only the greatest muscians but seriously one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. he treated his fans like friends he'd known for years
R.I.P nikki
you probly don't remember me but i remember you =)

such a consummate artist.
such a chilling subject for the song too considering he had only 40 hours left to live.
an inspiration to musicians everywhere.
cool is its own exemplar.
