Hondas are reliable. I have a 2002 Acura RSX which has the sam engine as a Civic Type-R It's been reliable, no engine problems and it's turbocharged. Just regular wear and tear like brakes and the clutch.
@linn1000 Fair enough although I think the torque argument has been done to death. In the powerband the S2000 goes very well - whether or not you like that style of driving is a personal preference. I don't think there's any comparison to a 997 S either but then as you pointed out moneywise that's a completely different kettle of fish.
Couple of big factors going against the S2000 here. FWD cars are always easier to drive on the limit in wet conditions like this. Secondly this is a 1st gen S2000 with the smaller 16" wheel/tyre combo, just 205F and 225R. The 17" combo of 215/245 gives significantly more grip especially at the rear end.
@mazulises ...... the Type R is also V-tec, so apart from the other differences mentione, IE 6 gears etc, it's all the same amazing technology, just with a bigger engine, so simply has more grunt even before the v-tec steps in and just makes it all go beuzerk
Recently sold my 2002 Impreza STI PPP as it was too thirsty as a daily driver. I wanted something cheaper and more economical but still a serious driver's car so I got an EP3 Civic Type R instead, and so far I have no regrets.
@vteckicksarse... yes, the STi is a lot quicker, especially off the lights it is blistering. Not really a fair comparison. But I find the Civic just as much fun in it's own way. Its nimble, and feels urgent and energetic. And unlike a Turbo engine it really loves being thrashed to the redline (as long as you maintain it well and keep an eye on the oil levels).
@Vesuvio360 sold my 2004 sti ppp for the same reason 60pounds a week on fuel just cudnt do it,so got my self a 2005 ep3 prem edition and so far no regrets or tho i miss the torque of my scooby i had 330ft/lbs of it..

@1hit1derz Road & Track took the S2000 to a 0-60mph sprint in 5.4 seconds back in 2005. Many publications test the S2000 0-60 under 6 seconds, usually in the 5.4s-5.7s range. To get those numbers, however, requires a 6000-7000 rpm launch while dumping the clutch.
I've got the s2000 at the moment after selling a grey type r, even tho i love the s2000 the type r still had a great feeling too it that the s2000 misses. I loved the gear nob central and the seats compared to the s2k. Still both great cars, would have the type r back any day
You notice how this video is full of errors tho, he says the s2000 only has around 20bhp more than the civic when infact its 40bhp more and the 0-60 in the s2000 is 6.0 not 5.5. The only thing this video shows is how much better a driver Jason is to the other guy.

The S2000 is a complete joke. I've got a 2002 SAAB Viggen 5-door with the Nordic Stage 3 software and accompanying hardware. Mine has an adjustable Koni suspension with thick anti roll bars, strut brace, sub frame brace, poly bushings all around, poly engine and tranny mounts. I'm pushing 300 hp at the crank and my car has no understeer. I can fit 5 people in my car and a lot of luggage. I would eat the S2000 on a track. And also, my car costs a LOT LESS than an S2000, and does 33 mpg combined.

When you chop a roof off of a car, that car immediately becomes a poser mobile and not a car building to go really fast. Body flex is an issue in any convertible. So take your S2000 and shove it up your ass.

Look, I'm happy for you that you managed to get your S for 8K. If your S wasn't a soft top and had an actual metal roof that was fixed to the A and B pillars, it would be very safe in a roll over. See, when you roll a convertible, your A pillar (wind screen pillar) collapses and there isn't any support to prevent your face/skull from scrapping the road. All I'm saying is that the S is somewhat of an under achiever for the class it wants to fill.
My next project car will be a 2008+ Subaru STI. I'm going to change out the suspension, anti roll bars, a lot of engine components, etc., to make it into a 450-550 hp grocery getter. And when you put a nimble AWD rally machine against most RWD poser mobiles, it would slaughter them. Don't drive your S too fast because the most stable cars have a risk of rolling and then you're screwed.
But I know people personally who rolled it from hitting a curb...their fine!
The A pillar is super strong on it!
And like you said, an STI should stay in Rally, cause that's what it was designed for, and an s2000 with 400+ hp does magic on the track, AWD and 4-door should stay in Rally!

@sxsv1 The hard top is removable. The one in the video is the Honda unit - there are a few other 3rd party tops as well. I have one and it's great in the winter here in the Northwest ;)
I always remember this clip when it was aired....astounding...CTR beats the S round the track....well...the key reason why is as they said TRACTION....front-mid-engine-RWD versus Front-engine-FWD = the CTR has the advantage in the wet with the engine/gearbox weight over the driving wheels...in the dry my £ is on the S

Engine (1.6 to 2.0), gearbox (5speed to 6speed), interior (different seats, door cards, gear knob and steering wheel), suspension (stiffer anti-roll bars and shocks), brakes (bigger).
Probably a few more but that'll do for an idea.
