The most impressive thing about electric cars is that they are a relatively new technology pulling these kinds of results. While gasoline cars have been around for ages and are just now starting to get excellent numbers. Of course, electric cars borrowed all of their technology besides the engine from gasoline cars. But in the future, electric cars are going to outperform gasoline tremendously. Electric is the future.
The Tesla wasn't set up for track use becuase of the wrong tires if that is any consultation. Still, for 100 grand, it still should have performed better. The production cost of the car is too high.

What I heard, it is all about torque. Apparently the electric engine gives you the full amount of torque from 0 - I-don't-know-how-many-RPM. This translates in incredibly fast accelerating power, especially in the lower rpm's. The TT race track has many sharp curves (it is actually a motorcycle speedway). So I can see how the electric car can beat the gasoline car.
On the other hand, it was a demo during the kick off of this project. So I guess it is no 'scientific evidence'. (But hey, it is faster than a gasoline car. This I have witnessed myself :))

I'm missing the specs on these vehicles..
Power / weight.. for as far as I know the electric version could have twice the power, then it's no miracle it's faster.
