When I was a youngster I thought this was the dumbest show ever. But when I was in grade 13 something strange happened. I would spend nights in my room downstairs doing homework for hours. The TV would be on but I wouldn't be watching so whatever was on just.....ran on. MASH ended up being one os those shows that ran. After unconsciously hearing it for several weeks, I started to pay attention. And I started.....laughing. Then I started watching.......religiously. Then I started........
@SCROGY .......to wonder how in the hell I ever thought this show was dumb. Stupid kid! I realised of course that MASH is probably a little too mature and intelligent for a kid. For example, the episode where they are playing poker with Sid Friedman and he says he had a patient who would only crawl along the woodwork and Hawkeye responds: "Oh.....corporal Kafka!!"......now how the hell would you know what that joke meat unless you read The Metamorphosis? I wish I had been smart enough......
@SCROGY .......to watch this show when it was in production. as it is I have loved this show in syndication and I truly think it is the GREATEST sitcom to ever grace television. I hope to one day sit down with the series on DVD and watch the whole thing in one sitting. That will be some marathon!!!
MASH was my absoloutly favorite show of all time. I eagerly looked forward to each new episode back then. I was laughing all the time watching these wonderful actors and actresses do their craft. I was so sad when the show eneded, but still laugh and fondly remember the good 'ol days of watching a classic show. Rest in Peace Colonel Potter/Harry Morgan. You are one of the greats and you will be sorely missed. The same goes for Larry Linville.
What's this garbage about needing uploader approval to post a comment? YouTube should be ashamed for censoring. Alan Alda said that this was the most unusual experience he ever as an actor. He said it was like be on stage in a empty theatre, but all the audience were watching from the wings.

Its hard to impress on people today what a big deal this show was. TV is NOT THE SAME now. This was destination viewing at the time. There is a whole generation of people who have this show as their life sound track. Today everything is so homogenized. Every show is a CSI clone. Along with the Vogue models that serve as the actors. MASH was different. It had PEOPLE as characters. You could honestly believe these people really existed.
May you rest in peace Col. Potter. Mash is one of thse shows that made me feel at home. All the characters could be your friends and Col. Potter to me represents a voice of reason in times of insanity. It's funny you know my daughter complains about football or things I watch but one day we watched a Mash marathon and she stayed with me till the last credits!
One of the best TV-shows of ever. I cannot help myslef, I love it. R.I.P. Harry Morgan, I hope you ride your favorite horse up there and you're with your beloved Mildred.
Still love the reruns of MASH. Makes you laugh, cry and remember that the cost of freedom is not free and that as a nation, we should not just throw the lives of our service members away without just cause.
I teared up watching this... MASH was such an amazing show, and is still one of the best there ever was in my book. There is something powerful in it...
This doesn't remind me of Star Trek the movie at all - where is the dude that played Fred Sanford, and why aren't they wearing their regulation Army Sombreros?
I have seen every single episode of MASH and watched them all as they debuted and were shown weekly.I love this show and could watch it all day long with no complaints. They just don't make 'em like this anymore, that's for sure!!
Easily my favorite show of all time. Well-written, compelling characters (Although Margaret always has kind of annoyed me, her character is still interesting.). Mash and In The Heat of the Night were the only 2 shows that got better as they aged. The writing was superb. The way that they changed relationships as time went by. Reality. The cast changed and it didn t lose a beat. That s life as we know it.
For years I refused to watch M.A.S.H. with the logic that if they had such fun in Korea I can't WAIT to see how much fun I had in Vietnam! Then I watched it and saw what a masterpiece it was. This is the only show I've ever seen which got better as they changed leading characters. Henry Blake was never believable as a C.O.. Col. Potter I could believe in a heartbeat!

Johnny Depp would make a great Hawkeye, please remake MASH and this time put it in Vietnam. Come on guys there are still MASH units in todays world, humour was a way of dealing with the day to day events. Todays Mobile Army Surgical Hospital's are like star wars to the Korea days.
watched this show as a kid, remember the finale when it aired, although only now all these years later do I appreciate how truly amazing it was..sad to see Loretta get choked up like that and break character briefly, this had to be a tough shoot emotionally
I would watch an hour of this over most shows currently on TV. To watch a group of true professionals working their craft, and especially showing the "family" that they had become in the way they react to trying to film these scenes, is a joy to behold. Thank you to the doctors and nurses of the "double natural" and the actors who portrayed them for hours of enjoyment on screen and for sharing these precious moments off screen.
It's amazing to see the characters of the show must of us watch and love can, during the outtakes, show their true selves. And that true self is something we've never seen before and in my eyes alone, shows how well they can play into the characters that they are. Rizzo, Father Mocahay, even the Col. all have a awesome and unique personality on the show, it was amazing to see what they must've been like filming it.
@CollaborationSeries True but Goodbye Farewell and Amen was shot during the fliming of the last episodes of M*A*S*H. So this episode before the Series Finale was the last episode to be filmed.
I loved this show so much that I just ordered every single show on DVD as a package on Canada's Entertainment Shop . com All 11 years of it. Gonna be so worth it !!!
They were all one big family because of the number of years M*A*S*H was on the air, cast changes and all.Col.Sherman Potter & Col. Henry Blake couldn't have been more night and day from one another.
MASH is a classic show, i wasn't even born when the show was on the air, but my mum loved it so much she bought the dvd's when they came out and we watched the, i think i know every episode by heart and i think that it was amazing.
I am 17, I have been watching MASH since I was 8 or 9. I love this show and watch the show everyday multiple times. I have no idea who my favorite character is. At times, Colonel Potter is my favorite, I love a lot of characteristics of him. Radar at times is my favorite due to his child like but caring ways. Of course, I love Hawkeye, Alan always stole the scenes. I love all of them.
MASH is my favorite tv show of all time but I have to admit that I don't often, well, admit that as when I do I kept skeptical "really?" looks and cries. Like they can't believe why I like it so much.

@paraawesome I saw the set back in the late 80's when I was stationed in Port Hueneme. It was really cool to drive into the hills near LA and see it. You could just drive right up to the roped off area and walk in. No guards, no security, just an empty spot in between some hills.
I bought them all on DVD so I can get my fix whenever necessary lol, usually a few times a week even with the numerous times it is aired ( still at least 4 episodes a day)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
they should have put this show out of its misery 3 yrs earlier.....so damn funny early on......once B.J. replaced "trapper"---it sucked shit from then on.....all political..and drippy....and sappy..
..and real, whats wrong? dont know how to handle your emotions? War isnt one big joke, and to percieve it like that just leads to the assumption that war is ok. i admit its nessecairy sometimes, but its never ok to end live, if you dont have too. So sorry it wasnt funny enough for you, why dont you go back to family guy and ren and stimpy.
i vaugley recall seeing the 'last scene' on Entertainment Tonight, and when alan alda called out "Cut! THAT'S A WRAP" and the flashbulbs went off, and that was it. i knew the last 'episode' presented was 'Goodbye...' but i think that one was in the can (already filmed) before this particular one. wish someone could clairfy that. GREAT SHOW
@Lt93Nick Yes indeed, in fact its very blatant. But alot of his gruff sardonic character is informed by hawkeye, without Mash I doubt House would have been so widely accepted
@Lt93Nick House could have been just as good (remember MASH went through its share of bad writing times too) but the writing is alittle too unreliable
@The18Angus i have watch all the mash episodes i have seen them because when my mom had surgery my dad got a case of the episodes just because im 13 doesnt mean i cant watch mash (my favorite character is radar btw)
The final episode of MASH filmed was this one, but the "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" movie was shown as the last episode. Truly, the end of MASH was the event of the '82-83 season, and it will live on as one of the major Television events of our time! Thanks for the posting...
and it couldn't have been done any other way, Even though it was not filmed last, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" *is* the final episode of the series as it depicts the end of the conflict. That said, I remember watching the local news in LA when they discussed this time capsule episode as being the last. Much to everyone's surprise, it wasn't.
One of the best shows ever made. A reunion would be great but it would be sad without Col. Blake and Frank. They were the two funniest actors in the whole show.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I cry every time I watch "Goodbye Farewell, and Amen" same with when Radar leaves, and when Col. Blake leaves. MASH FOREVER!!!
I know exactly how Loretta felt when she broke down toward the middle-ish. At my school we performed the Sound of Music and were together for about three months, and before our last performance we got all the cast members out on stage and sang "The Sound of Music" and "Edelweiss" together...I was a mess. I still really miss it.
Gotta love MASH. I own all 11 seasons on DVD and this episode and the final episode are probably 2 of my favorite (even though I was said to see the show end).
When I was a youngster I thought this was the dumbest show ever. But when I was in grade 13 something strange happened. I would spend nights in my room downstairs doing homework for hours. @paraawesome I saw the set back in the late 80's when I was stationed in Port Hueneme. It was really cool to drive into the hills near LA and see it. You could just drive right up to the roped off area and walk in. No guards, no security, just an empty spot in between some hills.

Yup! Hawkeye makes House look pretty bad; but then House is pretty cheesy anyway...

I bought them all on DVD so I can get my fix whenever necessary lol, usually a few times a week even with the numerous times it is aired ( still at least 4 episodes a day)

..and real, whats wrong? dont know how to handle your emotions? War isnt one big joke, and to percieve it like that just leads to the assumption that war is ok. i admit its nessecairy sometimes, but its never ok to end live, if you dont have too. So sorry it wasnt funny enough for you, why dont you go back to family guy and ren and stimpy.

does anyone know what the EXACT final scene was? the one when they yelled "CUT! That's a wrap!"??
ivegotalongdong 2 years ago
i vaugley recall seeing the 'last scene' on Entertainment Tonight, and when alan alda called out "Cut! THAT'S A WRAP" and the flashbulbs went off, and that was it. i knew the last 'episode' presented was 'Goodbye...' but i think that one was in the can (already filmed) before this particular one. wish someone could clairfy that. GREAT SHOW
ivegotalongdong 2 years ago
The last scene of the last act, which ends with Hawkeye saying, "Well, since we've buried everything else, why not the hatchet?"

Hawkeye, or any other character on m*a*s*h, surgeon or not, could kick House's ass.

You are so right ^^
chobits1983 1 year ago
@potentialavalanche Without Hawkeye, the formula behind House probably wouldnt exist. I dont look at it as superceding but as homaging

Isn't house inspired by Sherloc Holmes?
Lt93Nick 1 year ago
@Lt93Nick Yes indeed, in fact its very blatant. But alot of his gruff sardonic character is informed by hawkeye, without Mash I doubt House would have been so widely accepted
tiemedown 1 year ago
@tiemedown
Maybe U are right.. But MASH is so much more better then House! ;)
Lt93Nick 1 year ago
@Lt93Nick House could have been just as good (remember MASH went through its share of bad writing times too) but the writing is alittle too unreliable

The final episode of MASH filmed was this one, but the "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" movie was shown as the last episode. Truly, the end of MASH was the event of the '82-83 season, and it will live on as one of the major Television events of our time! Thanks for the posting...
jed6271 2 years ago 11
and it couldn't have been done any other way, Even though it was not filmed last, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" *is* the final episode of the series as it depicts the end of the conflict. That said, I remember watching the local news in LA when they discussed this time capsule episode as being the last. Much to everyone's surprise, it wasn't.

Are you kidding Frank funny? Hes the 6th funniest in order are Hawkeye Trapper Blake(rip) Klinger Radar then Frank
hawkeyemccarthy 2 years ago
Frank's meant to be a weasle, but the late Larry Linville played him well.

This video comes in the Mash DVD box set Martinis and Medicine forgive my spelling. It can also be found on the GFA dvd box set.

is there audio commentary on dvds in this set?
dabble778 2 years ago
Excellent ! This is like a short documentary / docu - drama (?).
The actors seem more human during rehearsal, working to put a finish on the " product ".
knoxvilleguy2 2 years ago
One of the best shows ever made. A reunion would be great but it would be sad without Col. Blake and Frank. They were the two funniest actors in the whole show.
csdk44444 2 years ago 3
Wouldn't it be great to have some kind of reunion movie. Someone, maybe Hawkeye, could go back and retrieve that time capsule.
