For anyone who is interested, a collectors edition of the 12" album is now available for pre-order from the Howard Jones website. Its a bit pricey at £25, but comes with two bonus CD's of further extended version and mixes. Gome mine ordered today :)
@joe9320 Indeed he is, sung about it on Assault and Battery The lives were taken For feasts at the table A life of misery Ending with a shock Brutal murder All hands to the slaughter Mass torture All hands to the knife And I can hear the screams
@joe9320 With the knife, the jolt, the wring They must follow in our dreams Carrying a twisted sting Children’s stories with their farmyard favourites At the table in a different disguise Don’t talk to me of health Or something someone else will do We’re talking about the act Of taking life for me and you And I hear their screams
I went to see China Crisis at The Lyceum in '83. A band I liked called Friends Again were supposed to be supporting, but on our arrival there were posters saying this guy Howard Jones was playing and that his first single would be out soon on Stiff Records - Yeah, I know!. He was ace with all his synths and stuff, and so was the dancer - Jed or Jez... ... 'New Song' came out three weeks later and the rest is certainly history... X
I LUUV THIS VERSION. The Version i have is from off his Greatest Hits album, which btw is a TRUE MASTERPIECE! The video version is what i have but i'd LUV this one as well...Also, Things Can Only Get Better is posted as a extended version on YouTube and it sounds SO HAWT just as this version does...luv um' both and i luv Howard Jones! = D
yup, checked it and this is the same 12" in the cd. I thought ur 12" is different coz I didn't get to hear the percussion in it. The percussion has a dominant part....1:54-2:03 (intro of 3rd stanza) and 4:43-4:52 (extended part-esp. here). Love this version!
Thank you for uploading this song. I love this extended version with the instrumental part in the middle of the song. I only have it on tape and the quality is bad. But here, if I add "&fmt=18" I have CD-Quality.
Wow howee u are my 80s guru xx

@lippy170 Yep!
It's all disposable, noise pollution.
''I've got my Bitches in the Club...Diamonds on my cock...Crys'tal in my veins''...what a load of nonsense.
How much of that shite will we be talkin about in 20 or 30 years?
That's right...none.

howard Jones is a vegetarian, like morrissey, must be something in it as they both produce fuckin damn fine music.

i have read somewhere that this are ideals of hippies of sixties expressed via music hardware of 80 s /keybords, synthetisers, samlers.
This is a fasinating song...
I feel it touches my soul so deep

I love the part at 1:52 to 2:01, that gritty synth sound there is brilliant.

There's always been something in my humble which is ethereal about this song- & fascinating about this- the video, the synth---mmmm exotiq...

This is also on my CD of Human's Lib. It says (Extended Version) in the notes.
Seems to be a basic edit with the following tacked onto the end: verse, instrumental chorus, verse, chorus to fade.
Simple but effective.
Notice the slightly atonal note at 05:01 (clearer on CD).
tomstickland 3 years ago
I got the album on CD too; didnt realise it was on there in its Extended form.
TheUTubeTeamSucks 3 years ago
Do you think that that atonal note had a purpose there?
vino122 2 years ago
To provoke Youtube comments. Howard was a visionary like that.
tomstickland 2 years ago
All has purpose, but at times it's not always as obvious as we'd like it to be.
