these days, torpodo function to explode inches below the hull, not from a direct contact hit. Its proximity and much more effective. See the hull rise from the water and split in two from the explosion of the warhead.
yup you are right torpedo explodes under the ship below any armour that's why battle ships are obsolete torpedoes of today do not hit armoured belts . well said
@motorguzzi100 well said. your comment? not so much. Battleships are obsolete because of Carriers and Naval Airpower. NOT torpedoes. At the time Battleships went obsolete, we still used the old side hitting torpedoes. LEARN YOUR HISTORY!
Torpedo doesnt 'hit' the ship... it detonates below it, causing a huge pocket of air to rise up below the ship, thus pushing it up in the air and breaking it in half.
@Posthumousdecay It's all the same ship and not one of the shots is a model. You are showing your own ignorance. The Ship is the decommissioned HMAS Torrens, a River Class Destroyer Escort.
It was this picture I had in mind in 1982, off South Georgia, when a torpedo alarm call was issued...Thank God, it was a false alarm, but a very scary few minutes indeed
@axeshack Thanks for your service! Big shame is Australia wasn't there because of a sulk over Vietnam. But the New Zealand Navy covered the RN in Hong Kong and the Pacific so they could redeploy the ships. Wow, amazing power of the blast. you don't really appreciate how strong a torpedo is from movies until you see this video or others like it. Literally cut the ship in half and blew the conning tower right off..dam.
Awesome display of the power of a modern day torpedo. Seeing the back break then watching the large part of the superstructure fly off in the following blast, takes your breath away...
This came out on the news. It's a retired Navy ship, it was a controlled sinking and the purpose of it was to create habitat for wild-life. It wasn't destroyed by hostile forces or anything like that.
idiots who think a battleship could withstand this are crazy, not to mention that a battleship is obsolete. one aircraft can destroy a battleship now.
@t2t2sync Being shot at by an Australian Colins class submarine, the only way those failboat tubs can sink a ship is if you tie it down first. Sad to think that a PlayStation2 has more prossesing power then our front line subs. Also funny to see how many nutjobs have shown this clip and claimed it was them blowing it up. Hamas v Isreal was the last one I think.

looks like an old type 12 Royal Navy Leander Class Frigate. Pennant number on the bow are foreign markings, maybe one that was sold on to Chile, India or Australia/New Zealand. Dont think its a later batch three Leander. Who can tell? Think the blue prints for Leanders were sold onto other countries to make their own. Its a later version of the successful Rothsay Class. Anyone know anymore?
@supream53 yea that shit can't fuck with a battleship..... they sank a old WW2 battleship a while back in germany it took a german fleet depleting all of their ammo to sink it!!!
If one watches carefully all of the ships were dead-in-the-water (DIW) when they were hit. That means they weren't moving for those less familiar with Navy terminology.
There is no way that an active duty Navy ship would be DIW with a sub in the area. So these were either target ships that were towed into position for target practice or they were mock-ups.
And yes the ships were destroyers and frigates, not battleships.
I always find it entertaining when people insult others for no apparent reason. We can tell a lot more about the intelligence, or lack of it, of the person doing the insulting than we can the person being insulted.

@Assaultpredator This was on the news. It is actually a US Navy ship fitted with sensors on its hull to record the impact, to help further technological progress. So you are right, it was towed into position. Though, I would say, surely USA does not go round blowing up other nations ships on camera. Infact, I don't think anyone does this lol
@Apocholypse Nah it's not a USN ship its a Leander Class DE (British built) and from her Pennant number shes HMAS Torrens of the Royal Australian Navy sunk by a Collins Class sub. What the test was on a jointly developed warhead by the Australian and United States.
this ship was HMAS TORRENS a RIVER CLASS DESTROYER ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY. I KNOW I SERVED ON HER, TOPEDO TEST AFTER HER DECOMISIONING, SHE WAS A FINE SHIP. GLAD SHE HAD A WARRIORS DEATH AND WASNT SOLD TO THE SCRAP MERCHANTS TO MAKE RAZOR BLADES OUT OF HER
This wasn't an Iranian test at all. The Australian Navy sunk this decommisioned destroyer in 1999, search on Wikipedia HMAS Torrens (DE-53), or, look at the videos to the side of this comment. However, like you said it was used by the Iranians and by Al-Qaeda as propaganda, but this was carried out by the Australian Navy.
It does take balls and dedication to do this job and be in the military in general. How many people leave it to someone else because they are too damn good and know that other men, very young men will cover for them? Don't worry , we will guard your freedoms, make sure you can sleep at night , and play your video games.
@firenwater84 You got it, mate. British Leander Class Destroyer. I was in the US Navy and sailed with one in a NATO group in the 70's. It take balls to sail on a destroyer because there isn't much but your own anti-submarine warfare skills and luck between you and something like this.
@garpe13779 no it does not take balls. how many times has something like this ever happened?. exactly no happen no balls. dont make shyte up. here is what happened. your afraid of the water and pissed yourself too much at sea and then made up the" takes balls" perceptions to cover your fear. you best stay on land.
That's not a battleship. Torpedoes had nowhere near that effect on real battleships. The USS north Carolina took a hit from one of the largest torpedoes manufactured in WWII righted herself and sailed back to Pearl for new paint. Plus, the sources of these types of videos tend to be highly dubious. Mostly defense contractors trying to sell a new bomb. I would not doubt that the torpedo had some help
@garpe13779 The hole itself was repaired in far less time, the bulk of the time spent on refitting. But the point is the same, a torpedo can not do the damage to a battleship that it can to a frigate or destroyer or even an aircraft carrier.
thats HMAS Torrens been sunk by a collins class sub. the torrins was a Destroyer escort this happened off the coast of Western Australia. Rumour has it that they planted explosives in the ship to make the explosion look better.
@zequelll@vanilayave I don't think it's a destroyer even, too small. Looks more like a frigate. Anyway, that torpedo seems to small to be able to break the back of a battleship anyway.
No it's not....., it's a former Spruance Class US Destroyer that was decommissioned and donated as a target for the Australian-US Navy joint SINKEX exercises in the waters off of Hawaii. The explosion is real, it's a real ship, and was sunk by a real Aussie attack sub with real torpedos during
the exercise. Some of the people making comments thinking this is fake, shows how ignorant many (but not all) young people are today. They just have no concept of military history or firepower.
theeldoradoKid, I got my experience from serving on one of those ships you muppet, I didnt pick it up in a book ot read it on the net, I know what a bloody leander Class Frigate looks like, take the heat off yourself boy and grow up.
There is another video out there on Youtube: "Aussie Sub sinks US Destroyer" it looks just like the same ship that was destroyed during the SINKEX exercises in July of 2008. Your experience on the Frigate not withstanding, take some heat off yourself son, and take a look at THAT video. I could be wrong, but it looks just like the same ship to me as this one. I was trying to discern the hull number but couldn't quite make it out, maybe you could have better luck.
Thanks for the further clarification, HMAS Torrens it is then...however, quite a few old US Destroyer Escorts including ones sold to other nations then retired, have been historically used for exercises like the SINKEX described above, again thanks for tracking down the ship number and name.
That's it Clive, no more Fosters for you!...I just found another one out there that could explain everything we are looking at, different perspective on the video and better comments. Check it out: The Sinking of the HMAS Torrens... that's a Leander class Frigate being used as a target to be sunk by a sub.
It makes the destroyer look like a toy. The force necessary to flex an entire ship like that... it's pretty nuts considering how strong you think your ship is.
Its a river class australian destroyer based on the Leander class frigate, The torpedo wont strike the ship rather detonate underneath it breaking its back, We used to play war games with this ship when i served in the RNZN and were over in Aussie
can someone tell me please the torpedo model?

Your experience on the Frigate not withstanding, take some heat off yourself son, and take a look at THAT video. I could be wrong, but it looks just like the same ship to me as this one. I was trying to discern the hull number but couldn't quite make it out, maybe you could have better luck.

Pennant number is 53 - HMAS Torrens which is a River Class Destroyer Escort but in the UK and NZ I think they called them Leander Class Frigates.

@Eldarado
That is NOT a Spruance class destroyer. Spruance class has TWO masts, first of all.

OK thanks for the clarification...

not saying that it's fake, but it looks like more of a scaled down ship and torpedo

Pretty cool but you should change the title to destroyer.

Hey , why would they wanna wreck my $10 battleship :(
dheNERD 2 years ago
It makes the destroyer look like a toy. The force necessary to flex an entire ship like that... it's pretty nuts considering how strong you think your ship is.

Its a river class australian destroyer based on the Leander class frigate, The torpedo wont strike the ship rather detonate underneath it breaking its back, We used to play war games with this ship when i served in the RNZN and were over in Aussie
