what kind of sound do you expect from a camcorder ??? gezz, come on people, guitar work is still there... and a new album is in the works. first one in 15 years....
Please remember that they're playing at a quickly put together Chicago thing that is outside. Also remember you're hearing sound thourgh a tiny camcorder. I saw them in 2003 at International Pop Overthrow. All the guys sounded great. The only issue then was a misbehaving Vox amplifier.
When Shoes started in the early '70s, playing live was not a focus. One EP (Heads or Tails) and three albums (One in Versailles, Bazooka, and Black Vinyl Shoes) were recorded before any live shows. Recording - with the hope of having a hit record - was the goal. This concert was Shoes' first public performance in over four years. John Murphy's vocal is off-key? Well, he is in his mid-50s, after all. And this isn't his main job. No one is missing; the band uses a revolving cast for percussion.
Shoes played Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ back in 1994, shortly after 'Propeller' was released. I didn't think much of that album when it was released, but the live version of "Tore A Hole" at Maxwell's kicked butt. You would never know from photos on Shoes' album jackets that Gary Klebe is built like a football linebacker.
"Now and Then" was the reason i bought Present Tense, QFM96 (still exists) a local rock station here in columbus, ohio played the hell out of "Now and Then" back in 1979-80always liked the guitar work and vocals in this song, The Shoes like "Fastball" (The Way) had a very British, Beatles influenced sound to them.
I was actually referring to the lack of backing vocals which is very important to Shoes sound. I have written and recorded lots of songs, which is irrelevant. I saw the Raspberries live a couple years ago and they sounded great, thanks in large part to the fact that they had two extra vocalists and an extra vocalist keyboard player.

Thanks a bunch for this - 'Now and Then' has always been my favourite Shoes song. Great to see it despite the off-key vocals and shaky camera.

dogtron, it sounds pretty much like the record. He is singing live idiot. How many songs have you written/recorded?

Hey, I love the Shoes and have seen them live before, but the singing is way off. I does *not* sound like the record.

Who are they missing in the line up?

I wish they would have let somebody help them out with vocals. They should sound way better than this.

I agree. It's a good musical performance ruined by an off key lead vocal.
