I honestly like this Witch better, though the other Witch was good, she just didn't feel....as Witch-y as I hoped, Loved her acting XD She is quite terrifying as well DX
The witch was the only thing that wasn't as good in the new version as this witch. Barbara is the best witch, although I think the little man in the new film is better as he is more evil than tis one.
I saw this in 1989 on our PBS ,or it could been 1990,anyway I was 13.I first thought that white witch was a hideous old woman,Im talking not just the character but the actress herself,I being American wasnt familiar with Barabara Kellerman.people rag on the effects, hell it was the 80s and BBC,you cant expect 21st century effects in a 80s bbc production.anyway,I ran across this again in 2005 in our local library.I checked it out,and damn I was wrong about Barbara being ugly as the witch, she's HOT
I like the Witch how she goes from happy to psycho in a nanosecond... she's the sort of person you would not want to be knocking on your door on Halloween cause you know what's going to happen if you don't give her any candy...
Does anyone else remember a BBC childrens programme trailer which featured apperances of characters from childrens shows? Well Barbara briefly appeared in it as the White Witch again! I think it was from 2005 or so....
I guess she doesnt like it, after all she went there once didnt she, it was she who tore thr arm of the lamp post from mans world which when she through at aslan in the magicians nephew, which fell to the floor and grew into a young lamp post when aslan created narnia
Why is it so necessary for everyone to compare the 2005 Disney's Narnia and this one? -_- I've read the books as a young child... and I enjoyed the 2005 Narnia as well. This one isn't bad either.
I used to love this when I was a kid :) This version fits so much better to the books than the movie does. The movie makes it all look so typical - like any other movie. The series have a special feeling to it, and it's way more frightening too. Like the woolves, they're so fuckin' scary in this version :S And the theme song is beautiful, it brings back so many memories :] BUT!!! I have to admit mr. Tumnus is way hotter in the movie!! :p
I like Tilda's version better..She's not as scary as Kellerman but she does got the looks ;) She's more feisty and there's something about the way she looks at you.It creates a suspense. You'll never know whether she's gonna kill you or use you.
@b4u2day Barbara IS The White Witch; Tilda was never convincing. The White Witch was not meant to be a blonde "white" person anyway, which any of the book fans will tell you. She's *paper* white with dark hair, tall and skinny, and thinks you are a bug. She's basically the evil snow queen. There's a whole book that goes into how she got this way. The Disney version just sort of glossed over TWW for no apparent reason.
The acting is so terrible in this... i know it's old an stuff... but i am so glad i saw Disney's first or else i would have never given it a chance...
the scenery looks more real in this- think it might actually be a snowy wood. it looked super fake in the Disney one, which always kind of bothered me. my vhs versions of these are all messed up now, since I must have had them since I was 7 or 8. wish someone would make The Magician's Nephew. It's just as interesting as the others. They didn't make The Horse and His Boy either- The Last Battle was kind of weird though. Wish films would stop being so damn flashy and stick to the story now!
The White Witch looks much more like how I picture her here. She is more like what I picture Jadis (Jadis=the White Witch) from the Magician's Nephew looking like. I think they took the term "white" too literally in the newer movie. Did it say in the Magicians Nephew that Jadis had dark hair? Because I have the feeling that she did.
Oh man thank you for uploading these :) I used to have these taped from pbs on vhs and I would watch them over and over when I had to stay at home from school, sick. These movies always made me feel better :)
The only thing that bugged me about the movie version of TLWW was that Jadis didn't have black hair, which this Jadis clearly does just like in the books.
When I was little the Turkish Delight looked like the best thing in the world. And then when I was older I tried some. It was not as good as I expected.
It makes sense that Tilda's acting was more subtle and could make herself seem quite pleasant and ordinary, maybe a little mild at times, because then it's not as obvious that she's a baddy, but I think I prefer this Witch a bit because she and the cartoon version are very much like the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, and the two writers were very similar. Her and Maugrim have that WW2 teacher scariness that could've made me pee myself though otherwise behave when I was little.
You know? I like both Barbara's and Tilda's character. Barbara's acting shows more of the smug side of the queen. The "I'm the shit bitch and you aint" while Tilda's is more of the 'hidden evil'. More cold and used more of a seductive trickery than Barbara. They're both great actresses in my opinion.
I think this version has much more of a fairy tale feel to it. The Disney version starts out well enough, but halfway through it just turns into a standard fantasy battle epic. The best time for Disney to have done this story was back when the man himself was alive.
@WillScarlet16 I felt the way about the new one too personally. Both works of art. I don't care for the new prince caspian changes from the book though, and I can't compare it to BBC yet.
Okay Barbara is NOT OVERACTING! she is playing the character the way it was in the book. She even looks like the White Witch. It just proves that she read the book and analyzed the character much more critically than Tilda.
@gogetyourverb But playing the character exactly the way it is in the book is so boring. And I personally agree with those who are saying she's over acting.
you know jadis you kill im now, then the prophesy is kuput. No? gonna let him live and bring the others? yeah you just lost there and then sweetheart.
There are times where I feel that Barbara and Tilda are actually very similar to one another in terms of how to play the character. They both are merciless and evil, but both of their interpretations are perfect for what they are.
The dialogue in the BBC series was definitely much closer to the book, but I guess that's because they had more time to make it accurate than in a 2 hour movie. I like both versions.
I love this version. I can't even say it. I used to watch this over and over when I was younger. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I do prefer the old version to the new.
Barbara Kellerman is one of my acting influences. She is the definitive White Witch. She is very theatrical and truly understands the role and she is brilliant. I like both her and Tilda Swinton equally. I feel as though Barbara is more frightening and more victimizing. Tilda is more mysteriously evil and sly almost like the stepmother in Cinderella.
@LuigiMario338 lol - the witch thought the prophesy was all gone when it was only edmund asking for some more turkish delight. It should have been more English with Edmund asking for fish and chips. Oh well.
i definitely prefer this witch to the new one... yeah she's kind of over-the-top, but i think that fits her character better. she's like this psycho who can kind of boil over at any moment, and i remember that used to terrify me. it's not so much that i don't like tilda swinton as an actress, i just don't like the way she was directed...
Why are they making the movies when there is a well done series made available. Oh well I guess Americans always have to do their versions no matter how good the originals are.
they're not, harry potter is the biggest movie franchise in the world that has been popular worlwide for 10 years, and is under ownership by a verry big author ( who's alive) and a huge production company ( warner brothers). so i seriously doubt it, but this is just a little peice of shit television series that a smart american man decided to turn into a wonderful popular movie franchise
@chikolocu wow calm your harmones spaz, i watched it because i fell in love with the movies and thought this tv series was gonna be good but i see that i was wrong, and that dosnt make me spoiled, it just means that im saying my opinion, you're the spoiled one because u think that ur always right and that whenever someone dosnt think so, u freak out like a 10 year old kid, grow up
@chikolocu uh, no shit sherlock! of course ppl here dont like bad comments, who does! but when u put up a video u have to know tht there will be ppl who like it and ppl who dont, and i didnt realize tht my opinion stinks, infact i think my opinion rocks! this tv series is an embarassment to the narnia series, if u wanna watch the REAL chronicles of narnia, watch the movies, dont waste your time watching this load of crap
@paulzrulz u no ur rly rude and first of all u have bad attitude. second ur stupid for trying to fight on youtube big dummy third if all u can do is talk shit loda crap then that means ur shit. peace out loser.
@chikolocu haha, ur a big hypocrite, did u know tht kid? cuz ( hope this dosnt make u cry) but ur also rude and ur also kinda fighting on youtube, if u havnt noticed, and second of all, learn to spell properly cuz i have no idea what the hell u wrote in tht last sentence
and ur soooo a hypocrite and soooo dumb and soooo annoying and soooo clogging up my inbox, so lets just end this so i can go bac to my peaceful life, and u can go back to your daycare.
lol first of all, im a 14 year old girl :P and second of all, which comment are u asking about? i made 2, about them making it into a series and how this white witch is a terrible actrice?
Even though I love this series (a little bit more than the film versions, mostly because I grew up with this one), I think Tilda Swinton does a better job as the White Witch. This version is just too obviously evil, whilst Swinton is a lot more subtle and thus more threatening when she imprisons Edmund.
How come in the land of Narnia, they dont know what a spare room or wardrobe is, but they know what Turkish Delight is?
Hmmmm.
Either way, I like both versions. I used to hate this series as a kid, but then again I was more into stuff like Thundercats or Transformers. I just saw it as a posh-kids show. Looking back at it now, it was quite well done for its time, and quite charming...
"It is a lovely place my house" I fkn LOVE Miss Kellerman. The Disney version was good to in it's own way. I think we all have sort of a morbid fascination with Jadis and what her history is, if she was ever good.....what her fate is.......why she has power at all? And yes, I know the Biblical implications involved.
have you read the magician's nephew? That speaks a lot more about Jadis and her history in Charn. She recounts it to Diggory, who becomes the Professor in the lion the witch and the wardrobe.
She is definatly more like the witch in the book, however, she is more pretty in the newer one. Since this whole thing can be compared to the bible (Aslan = Jesus/God; Witch = Satan). It's said that Satan will appear pleasing to the eye so a gorgeous, potentially motherly-looking witch fits better than just an outright scary one.
This witch is much better then the other ones. She leaves a lasting impression especially since I remember her when I was younger. She fits the description of the witch, while the other witch tilda didn't really scary you like this one.
Edmund was 10 in the story but I think the actor playing him was about 13 or 14. I wonder what the dwarf meant when he said - He might know something?
@MidlandNinja he meant with Edmund being a human - a son of man of which don't normally exist in Narnia that he could be part of the prophecy so it's better for the witch to weed that out of him first before killing him straight away because it's very important to her
Does he not make the connection that he's the only "young man" she's ever met. Obviously he would then be the "cleverest and most handsome" she has ever met.
I like this series alot better than the films, but I must say Tilda Swintons white witch is far better than this one. This one yells too much, I don't think any child would have trusted her.
man this white witch let edmund ask for more turkish delight like a billion times before she yells no, compared to the disney white witch the first time edmund asks for more turkish delight she yells no and edmund probably wouldn't have expected that
ive got to say i watched all of these movies and now seeing the new ones ive got to say this witch scares the piss out of me more then the other one did
@Traykendude21 I know, you wouldn't expect to hear youngsters demanding like that in those days, when everybody was supposed to be politer. Still, that's Edmund though ...
@Traykendude21 Think kid of 5 would be wise enough, not to go off with complete stranger and Edmund is near enough teenager, obviously he must have been dropped at birth or something Lol.
I honestly like this Witch better, though the other Witch was good, she just didn't feel....as Witch-y as I hoped, Loved her acting XD She is quite terrifying as well DX

i definitely prefer this witch to the new one... yeah she's kind of over-the-top, but i think that fits her character better. she's like this psycho who can kind of boil over at any moment, and i remember that used to terrify me. it's not so much that i don't like tilda swinton as an actress, i just don't like the way she was directed...

Why are they making the movies when there is a well done series made available. Oh well I guess Americans always have to do their versions no matter how good the originals are.

@chikolocu
they're not, harry potter is the biggest movie franchise in the world that has been popular worlwide for 10 years, and is under ownership by a verry big author ( who's alive) and a huge production company ( warner brothers). so i seriously doubt it, but this is just a little peice of shit television series that a smart american man decided to turn into a wonderful popular movie franchise

@joshuamlee97 You must be referring to the VHS version which had it all cut together as a film.

Even though I love this series (a little bit more than the film versions, mostly because I grew up with this one), I think Tilda Swinton does a better job as the White Witch. This version is just too obviously evil, whilst Swinton is a lot more subtle and thus more threatening when she imprisons Edmund.
tolchok89 1 year ago 2

And yes, I know the Biblical implications involved.
jakejamieson33 1 year ago
@jakejamieson33
have you read the magician's nephew? That speaks a lot more about Jadis and her history in Charn. She recounts it to Diggory, who becomes the Professor in the lion the witch and the wardrobe.
Sorry if you knew all that.

@j3w3Lry the white witch is not a queen
TheZachary9 1 year ago
@TheZachary9 Well you know what i mean. lol..
j3w3Lry 1 year ago
She is definatly more like the witch in the book, however, she is more pretty in the newer one. Since this whole thing can be compared to the bible (Aslan = Jesus/God; Witch = Satan). It's said that Satan will appear pleasing to the eye so a gorgeous, potentially motherly-looking witch fits better than just an outright scary one.
Ghostgirl777 1 year ago 2
This witch is much better then the other ones. She leaves a lasting impression especially since I remember her when I was younger. She fits the description of the witch, while the other witch tilda didn't really scary you like this one.

Esta Bruja Blanca se ajusta mejor a la descrpción que se hace de ella en el libro, pero Tilda Swinton es irremplazable!

Edmund was 10 though the actor playing him in this version was about 14
MidlandNinja 1 year ago
Edmund was 10 in the story but I think the actor playing him was about 13 or 14. I wonder what the dwarf meant when he said - He might know something?
MidlandNinja 1 year ago
@MidlandNinja he meant with Edmund being a human - a son of man of which don't normally exist in Narnia that he could be part of the prophecy so it's better for the witch to weed that out of him first before killing him straight away because it's very important to her
...if that makes sense
vvelvettearss 1 year ago
Does he not make the connection that he's the only "young man" she's ever met. Obviously he would then be the "cleverest and most handsome" she has ever met.

I like this series alot better than the films, but I must say Tilda Swintons white witch is far better than this one. This one yells too much, I don't think any child would have trusted her.
MsSarjen 1 year ago
man this white witch let edmund ask for more turkish delight like a billion times before she yells no, compared to the disney white witch the first time edmund asks for more turkish delight she yells no and edmund probably wouldn't have expected that

The White Witch is so much more cunning in the new movie. I don't know how Edmund could possibly fall for this lady's tricks.
And what happened to "Don't talk to strangers"??
I don't know what to think of Mr. Tumnas (is that how you spell it?). He's got a completely different character, and both are nice for him.
Edmund is a real brat. "I want to go there NOW!" Who raised this guy?
That's all i have to say.
Traykendude21 1 year ago 3
@Traykendude21 I agree about the witch. In this version she is a pretty dull knife!
fishyfacedgurl16 1 year ago
@Traykendude21 I know, you wouldn't expect to hear youngsters demanding like that in those days, when everybody was supposed to be politer. Still, that's Edmund though ...
Ilovecats112233 1 year ago
@Traykendude21 Think kid of 5 would be wise enough, not to go off with complete stranger and Edmund is near enough teenager, obviously he must have been dropped at birth or something Lol.
