I didn't see this movie or Tombstone in the theaters. I saw them on videotape. I saw this one first and Kevin Costner made me not like Wyatt Earp. A few years later I finally decided to watch Tombstone because my sister loves it. Tombstone with Kurt Russell made me like Wyatt Earp. I admit that Kevin looks like the real Wyatt more but Russell did a better personality (more likeable).

@dpjmtol this wasn't a rip-off of anything. Kevin Costner came up with Tombstone, but left to do this one since he wanted the story to focus on Wyatt Earp and the producers wanted to focus on everyone. So, technically, Tombstone is a rip-off of Wyatt Earp.

@dpjmtol Tombstone and Wyatt Earp were made around the same time. Tombstone was finished earlier, so it was released before Wyatt Earp.

I don't prefer one over the other, though I'm sure they're both good movies.

I thought this was a generally good film. I prefer Costner in westerns more than his other films really (for me, his best being Open Range). This is interesting to see how his life progressed and his character changed when his first wife died, and he went from an unassuming man into a hardened lawman. Dennis Quaid's take on Doc Holliday was very good (although very different from Kilmer's) as he portrayed a much darker, washed-up Holliday, but a very good role. A very worthwhile film.

Some good individual moments but nearly collapses under its own weight. The first hour is pointless and dull, there is far too much melodrama, and the action sequences are unfocused and not exciting.

It's scary, I saw a real, old photo of Doc Holliday.. and the thing is that Dennis Quaid looks VERY much like him.. I have not yet seen this movie, but I have seen tombstone. I thought it was ok overall, but when I'm watching a western film I want to see a great story with great characters, and not just shootouts.. That's why I just love "The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford" - sadly it is a highly underrated film. Maybe I will like this one too! :D

this is a great movie, and it is one of the most underated movies i have seen. if your looking for an action western (like tombstone), then you'll get dissapointed, but if your looking for a slow paced, well directed western with a deep story, then i suggest you should watch this movie

What would you say was the greatest movie ever about Wyatt Earp? Would it be this film, "Tombstone", "The Gunfight at the OK Corral", or "Hour of the Gun"?

I saw each of these were good in their own right. However, I thought "Hour of the Gun" (from 1967) is the best, or at least my favorite. James Garner, to me, was the most convincing and believable of all the actors who played the famous Old West lawman

Hmm.. That's a tough one... It's hard to pick a favorite out of so many good films... I think maybe Tombstone is the one for me. Kurt Russell was excellent as Wyatt Earp, and Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer were also great... Each of these movies are unique, but for me Russell is the Earp I'll always remember...

my god!!!!....it's one of the best, and most underrated movies of all time!!!!!.....it's way more intimate than tombstone......with tombstone they only highlight the OK Corral gunfight.....which wasn't the only thing of significance that ever happened in Wyatt's life.......that's why i love this movie so much.....and i think Kevin Costner's version was a lot better than Kurt Russell's.....even though Kurt kicked ass too!......check it out!...you'll love it!
