I remember sitting at the hairpin, in my cheap crappy raincoat drenched through the skin waiting for the safety car to come in (the majority of the race was run under the safety car if I remember), seeing the amount of spray come off the cars and saying to my dad jokingly, "I bet there'll be a crash soon!"

I got the crash I wanted (a 14 year-old loves crashes) but it wasn't worth seeing the field obliterated, drivers injured, a red flag which lead to an 8km walk back to the hotel in the rain..

Wow! Great panning! The TV coverage was so foggy you couldn't see the flip! Home movies with real sound and no commentators is the best! Thankfully no one was permanently injured.

So Patrick has the Laguna Seca Back Flip and 2 Barrel Rolls under his belt;

One of the most famous pile-ups since Spa 1998 in the pouring rain.

Tagliani was not having a good day, rammed up the backside, bounced which then allowed him to an almost James Bond style Barrel Roll.And then the two at the back who have no idea and just keep driving at full tilt crashing in, horrible accident. Shows the safety of these cars.

I was at this Indy. And watched this all happen in front of me. The crash was devistating. It stopped the whole race, as the damage was horendous. Ive been to many Indy's on the Gold Coast, and seen accidents, but none compared to this.. Quite certain it happened as the race started, wet weather, champ cars were doin at least 220km/hr, they had absolutely no reaction time to stop. And having a rolling start, instead of a stop/start didn't help either.. Great footage to capture the moment..

Unbelievable footage. The race organisers were crazy for starting the race under those conditions. So lucky no-one was killed. Andretti also flipped upside down but only his onboard video caught it, so it doesn't really show what happened. Great video, thanks for posting it. Surprised no-one else had their videos on...

I don't think andretti flipped over. That might've been his onboard cam coming loose when it showed a replay from his roll bar cam. but I know Takagi, Vasser and Tagliani flipped

Andretti didn't fliped upside down, what happened was that the Players car that hit him also made that the on-board camera "flied" creating the illusion that the car was fliping... for reference look at the sky and and the track

Nice footage. That crash is a lot scarier up-close than it looked on TV. I always thought it was Michael smashing into the back of Tag that sent the Players car tumbling, now I know he used Vasser as a ramp. Yikes! That previous poster was right; Tag did catch a lot of air.
