  • wtf is wrong with him?

  • wow i love how the hi hats sound its reallly trashy but very clicky

  • HOLY CRAP HIS HI HATS. SO BROKEN WITH LOVE AND LEGIT SKILL

  • @otherside65 music is everywhere, even unorganized notes is a music. all we have to do is listen. if you dont like Greg style, it's your problem. I would more appreciated if you go get drum kits and show your beat than debating a sort of drumming style and show us what the differentiate what music and whats bullshit. all I know, bullshit is something come from mouth or text, like you did in this video comment box :)

  • @aryabame what im saying is that the appeal in this is more from his theatrics that his "solo". If it can be considered a solo, then its a pretty boring one that gives you nothing to listen to and has really no ideas being it. Its all just so hipsters can go "wow look how deep he is and how into it he gets" This sucks, face up to it

  • @otherside65 You clearly have a good ear and musical talent..I enjoyed ur Jaco cover and never heard that Mars Volta song, but it was beautifully preformed..the sounds of puerto rico made an awesome backdrop. Like everyone, you have your own preferences in music and art. Everyone is a little different. I prefer the weather report to deerhoof but others may not. They each specialize in different aspects of sound and people prefer what they can relate to more.

  • @otherside65 That being said. It is unfair to use subjective preferences to judge other's art. I understand that some people may have a culturally based identity ("hipsters"), and feel a sense of affirmation when they see something that appears "deep" without actually appreciating the complex musical elements. That's unfortunate. However, Greg Saunier is a well-trained musician and intelligent person with great creative depth (weird but brilliant in his own respect).

  • @otherside65 Coming from a perspective of a person who listens to far more abstract Jazz and Classical than Indy, I see elements in this performance which are very creative and display a sensitive connection to the improvisation. It isn't a solo, it's a improvisation where the guitar and drum play off eachother. I can relate to this performance, so I enjoy it and others clearly can also. If you don't, then that's fine, that's your preference.

  • @otherside65 The beauty of art is it's expression of one's inner emotions. Everyone is different and experience different events in their lives so everyone's feelings differ slightly also. art allows us to find beauty in the emotions of others which we relate to. You don't seem to relate to this which is fine. So to you it is ugly or bullshit or it sucks. But to others there is meaning..hopefully not because it appears "deep" but because they relate to the underlying emotions

  • That is some serious experimental drumming.

  • was ist des für ein scheiß

  • greg has drumming all figured out

  • Best part is 1:00 through 1:20

  • He on ecstacy? haha this guy is crazy

  • I wish that there was a "Just Ridiculously Dope " button on here. Dude is intense. He's pretty sick.

  • it would be hard to be sure that he's not having some sort of fit

  • is this real or akting

  • why dont people respect deerhoof guitarists. all you hear is omg jizz over the drummer. im a fan of the melody in deerhoof over the percussion personally. but he is fucking good, they all work together so well

  • @tonyhawksacriminal

i respect them a shitton. they inspire me to play guitar :). i respect all of deerhoof a shitton.

  • How is he so stiff yet so loose at the same time.... damn this guys awesome

  • Greg is awesome!!! So bummed about Zach breaking his foot and Nervous Cop not playing the tour..

  • also greg is probably the best rock drummer in the world right now arguably beside zach hill

  • this is improvisational music NOT ROCK MUSIC so comparing his drumming style here to the image you have in your head of a rock drummer is stupid

  • @dianecovering fart! phhart

  • @dianecovering Except he's a damn good drummer, a better drummer than maaaaany these days. He drums in the rock band deerhoof (and please don't argue genre). he's a solid lookin ass drummer.

  • He has some of the best moves I have ever seen.

  • he is so fucking good it is ridiculous

  • i love gregs drumming more than i love my kids

  • @mwrua88 You're an asshole, and i hope you lose your kids to a better parent.

  • @imshippyupup yep.. Lost em in a card game to Dave. now I love greg's drumming more than dave's kids

  • I say this with the least bit of criticism when I say it takes real skill to play that precisely terrible.. for that very reason is why this Greg rules!

  • I'm so glad to see people backing up uniquely talented drummers. He's better than alot of drummers and doesn't show it. His preference. Fuck all of you that think it's okay to "jealously bitch" (thanks FlightySalad).

  • He's so fucking sexy. I bet Satomi climbs him like a jungle gym.

  • so this is where they got the sounds for Creed Shreds

  • Tourette? 0.o

  • is this why he doesn't use toms?

  • This is fun. It's like when you were a kid with no care. Deerhoof Rocks!

  • ohhhh i get this guy now. He's a weeaboo.

  • @phre3k187 You done take that back you.

  • i cry when i hear greg saunier drum.

  • performance art

  • I HAVE THOSE PANTS

  • Oddest kind of seizure I've ever seen......

  • Lol.....wut?

  • At first, it seems as though it's rambling, but with a closer look and just listening, one can see he's quite talented. I've found a new band =]

  • is he having a seizure?

  • @KiLLTH3DiR3CTOR hes on drugs lol

  • it made me so happy to see this:D ,

(if you close youre eyes it isn't awkward at all)

  • what are you on? hes a sick drummer.

  • he has tourettes, paul roper the drummer from the mint chicks told me about him earlier this year, if that helps explain

  • wtf is this shit? it's just a retard behind a drumset.

  • @phre3k187 No, that's Greg Saunier plugged into the spasmodic random energy of pure creation. He can do the straight groove thing standing on his pinky.

  • @turbidhat

I think I can explain it. Look at an amatuer drummer. Watch the motions of their body closely. You'll notice that they lack control(obviously) and that they are quite stiff. Look at Greg's motions. Watching him play is like watching a great dancer. Outstanding control and grace. He's lithe. It's shows his proficiency.

  • Ha, ha, ha, ha!! This guy is so primal! It's like- "Give me stick; I will beat!"

  • This guy is so awkward....he reminds me of that South Park band episode- Timmer!! Hey Timmer!! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!! Yeeeeeeeeah!! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!! Yeeeeeeeeeah! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! I think that was his only lyric! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeer! Timeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!

  • sweet! does he play on any can can records? if there are any?

  • this is actually a legitimate style of jazz drumming. i dont remember the name of it, but it involves playing pretty much whatever you want as long as it fits in the measure of time you play in. say a song is in 8/4, you can play whatever in 8 measures, and be able to come back into the next measure and jump into a common rhythm with the rest of the band.

  • i would always joke with my friend by playing like this... i feel like im missing somthing...

  • im all for freedom of expression but i cant get my self to understand

  • @f2theorrest im sorry

  • Well that cymbal isn't broken at all

  • this is kungfu?

  • hahahaha

  • I mean this very seriously.

I've never understood why all musicians don't behave like their music affects them. This guy feels it. He's acting exactly like the music should make him. I love it.

  • Then perhaps you could tell me what exactly makes this guy so amazingly talented besides the fact that its different. I hear (and see)absolutely no technicality in his playing. Have I gone deaf?

  • His drumming style is extremely difficult to replicate. Because he doesn't play in whatever style you arbitrarily declare as technical you don't consider him talented? Stupid opinion.

  • I agree but does he replicate his own playing or just go for the feel and play close to what is recorded?

Otherwise it is more of an exercise then music. Thats how I feel about it any way.

And this is the first time I heard him play anything.

  • How about you actually pick up a Deerhoof album and listen. You are highly mistaken.

  • Yes he is all image. The plain white t shirt, the jeans, he is like KISS meets lady Gaga.

  • Hes also a performer, not everyone in the audience is a drummer.

  • @turbidhat Listen to more Deerhoof!

  • @turbidhat stop watching all these videos and hating on them ahaha

  • @turbidhat

Congratulations you are a complete ass. Oh and you dont know music, you put anyone infront of Greg's kit and they couldnt do shit with it.

  • @turbidhat You obviously know nothing about drumming. This guy's skills are absolutely superlative.

  • @turbidhat

your ignorance and lack of understanding are tragic

  • just type in the song name rainbow silhouette of the milky rain and you will see this how this drummer gets down on the drums and i tell you he can get down pretty good they should be playing at juans basement

  • this drummer is freaking awesome why dont you guys actually watch him in one of the songs that he plays with his band dumbasses then you will see how good he is

  • i cant believe everyone is just standing by watching this dude have a stroke.

  • because people can't imagine that what they love is irrational, and not universal... I still can't eat shrimp...

  • is this guy retarded?

  • haha he loox retarded in this clip.. but he is awsom!... crzy improvisation drumer

  • Someone please explain to me why if I like Greg Saunier's drumming I'm cool, but if I don't like his drumming I'm "jealous" or "semi failed".

  • I'm bored of the pissy bitching that goes on around this guy. If you were to listen the him in interviews or watch him drumming for Deerhoof you would see he's immense. Why cant musicians feel free to experiment? picasso was a fantastic expressionist and French cafe painter, but he chose to paint in a simplistic cubist, child looking manner as it better communicated his expression. If this isn't to your taste, don't watch it and don't jealously bitch.

  • @FlightySalad this one performance isnt really him, check out their live performances, hes a shit ton better, hes probably fuckin around here

  • @capturedevice62 yeah i know.. people were just bitching

  • @FlightySalad Agreed, most people are ignorant to this type of drumming. This is purely from free jazz.. Playing around a free meter gives the drummer almost absolute creative control with no "beat" to keep, playing off the other musicians subtle cues, adding his or her own sounds to the fury of audible-art. Its a very advanced form of percussion. One of my favorite contomporary "free" drummers is tom rainey..hes disgusting.

  • @cruxofthebisquite22 dont cal this free jazz drummiing. the big jazz drummers who did this type of thing did it with a lot more detail. they were actually making music with just drums. this guy, even though i like his drumming, is just making a fool of himself in this video. he might fool a couple hipsters, but im calling bullshit

  • @otherside65 I agree that it is not pure free jazz, its Deerhoof, but I still stand by what I said; that it is derived from free jazz. Greg Saunier is an eclectic, not a pure jazz musician, but some of his influences come from those big free-jazz drummers which you are likely referencing. Free-form drumming is often misunderstood. Watch the video entitled "Duo Tim Berne & Tom Rainey 1/2", and you should see some similarities (they are both very well-trained jazz musicians). I hope this helps.

  • @cruxofthebisquite22 i can understand your point on how its inspired by free jazz. but those drummers are actually making music when they solo. This guy is just hitting random things and moving around like an idiot to show how "deep" and "into it" he is.

  • @otherside65 True..its not very musical in a traditional sense. The definition of music is widely debated and has evolved over the years. Ive had this discussion before with people who relate more to melody and tonality (organized notes) and consider a-tonal music like some avant composers and much of contemporary free jazz not to be music. I lean towards the Edgar Varese definition, being simply "organized sound", and (to me) there appears some organization here. But to each their own.

  • @cruxofthebisquite22 oh come on. im not debating what is, and what isnt music. Im telling you that theres really nothing to listen to here. Listen to it without looking at the video so you can realize just how idiotic the whole thing is. Actually, I take that back, looking at it makes it even more idiotic. PEOPLE, LEARN TO DIFFERENTIATE WHATS MUSIC AND WHATS BULLSHIT. THIS IS BULLSHIT.

  • @otherside65 I'm sorry if any of my posts seemed combative or patronizing..its hard to express myself in 500 characters and I tend to go into more detail than necessary..all I'm trying to say is that even if you can't hear the music in it, others can. I hear a delicate interplay between the drums and guitar. Check out the video I mentioned or a Milo Fine improvisation..they're better trained but the concept is the same..its hard to hear in this video but its there. Sorry for the misunderstanding

  • @cruxofthebisquite22 right, I think that "interplay" is there because you imagine its there, or because you want it to be there. I hear it on some level, such as around 1:00 the drums and the guitar both go lowering their volumes, and when the guitar plays quick licks the drummer does too. But its general imitation, stuff kids do, and here theres people worshipping this guy like hes joe morello or something.

  • @cruxofthebisquite22 check this one out watch?v=7CibrgbbYGQ&feature=related Seems more like an aspergers influenced display or hipsterism than drumming to me. Its all about putting on a visual spectacle. And to end this argument, just cause im tired to coming in here, being eloquent in no way gives your argument any validity :)

  • @otherside65 u mad bro? what you just witness took a lot of skill and creativity, if you couldn't see the energy in that then i guess you're just blind

  • @otherside65 there's no such thing as bullshit in art...either that or all of reality is bullshit. if he's such a hack then buy a crappy drumset, do the same thing, get 45,000 views on youtube, should be easy if there's no substance to this right?

  • @otherside65 also, RAWWWWR

  • @guruu13 you can trip out on the sound of the cymbals (good sounding cymbals, by the way) and on the sounds he's making, but my point is this takes no skill or concentration and there is no thought process involved. A 14 year old could play this same "solo" but you wouldnt give him any credit if hes not moving his body around on a "transcendental trip" and because hes not the drummer for deerhoof

  • look at his freaking sticks they're like fucking toothpicks

  • Lots of jealous failed/semi-failed musicians here! Whenever anything new becomes successful those who are invested in the old get pissy. Just like when Nirvana killed hairspray rock. Open your minds and keep practicing guys, and maybe you'll succeed some day!

  • Potatoes!!!

  • The last view posts here have been pretty stupid...you could spend a life time debating what good music is and isn't...Instead you could just appreciate it for what it is...or if you hate it, you could do something else, like grab a hot dog. For my part I love what this guy does, I love his style, even if it is contrived. Plus, the band rock! Thatisit12: Dude, it doesn't matter how many instruments you learn to play well, you're still lame... :P

  • This is pretty terrible. The drumming is almost as gross as the noodle fag guitar licks. I get it, you are cool, you dress dumb, you might be gay on Tuesdays, you don't bathe. That doesn't mean you should act like a jackass and call yourself a drummer.

TWO THUMBS (because I only have two) AND TWO BIG TOES DOWN.

  • I think that this guy thinks "The weirder I look while hitting random shit the more people will think I'm deep or think that I know what I'm doing.."

This guy is absolutely horrible. There's drummers that are into their music and move/act weird (intoxicated feel) while playing..but they're actually GOOD! This guy is not.

  • Does this guy have down syndrome?

  • Cocain? Heroin? or Is this his first time playing on drums?

  • @thatsit12 alright, i know you're not going to like this comment, but you don't have any idea what "good" is. you've missed the point of the music entirely

  • So good.

This is the biggest set i've ever seen him play

  • shit man..., i think this guy has a.d.h.d.

    awesome tho...

  • 1:12 is the best thing i have ever seen

  • What a boss

isn't that a bigger set than he usually plays?

  • thats not amazing . this is awful

  • totally awsome, greg's drumming is pure brilliance

  • spazn out hah

  • ummm.. this is amazing... dont be foolish.

  • I could care less what anyone els says , This honestly has to be one of the most unique. awesome style of druming iv evr seen.

    You are my hero.

  • This. is. balls...

  • crazy ;D

  • Jamming with a toothpick in his left.....

  • Damn, that's a Z custom hi hat, and he broke the shit out of it! That takes some dedicated fury!

  • hahahahahah what the fuck is this? xD

  • What..........the..........fuck.

  • anyone else notice the stick in his left hand is totally shot?

  • The best part is the big BITE missing from his hi-hat. wtf?

  • In some sporadic and crazy way, his drumming makes total sense.

  • Awesome drummer. Awesome guy in general. Deerhood rock!

  • Best living drummer.

  • plus, what casey dietz does isn't really that unique, i know several drummers locally than use that "experimental" style, and im from fresno. we dont even have a music scene.

  • You're*

  • spasmic

  • Comment removed

  • For me the only way too fully take this in seriously was by looking away and just LISTENING. & Boy did it work. He may look wack doing it but It sounds awesome and so unique.

  • Ебанат.

  • this is great.

  • about damn time we saw a proper vid of greg's drumming on youtube. the guy is a fucking artist. his sense of rhythm is absolutely unique and his every hit is perfectly balanced. i wish i could play more like him.

  • looks like his m0m placed an earthworm in his pants (rofl) ... i want my 2:05 back!

  • one of the best drummers ive ever seen

  • well he's eccentric but nobody can match him he reminds me of brian chippendale drum wise and antic wise

  • shit, some parts of this was hilarious

it actually sounds pretty cool if you close your eyes

  • actually i am

but this just isnt my style of drumming

    he looks mildly retarded

    i like rhythm and style

    not whatever this is

  • Fine, but he isn't bad by any means. His articulation and experimentation is crazy....

Do you think this is bad drumming: /watch?v=a9mg4KHqRPw

    ?

  • Also, he can drum "normally" too, you know.

    /watch?v=gl1CPswR2S8

  • If you think this is bad drumming then you are obviously not a drummer

  • hahaha you too

  • watched casey dietz. pretty cool. his talent doesnt really diminish greg's though. ive seen videos of greg drumming in that kind of experimental style too. considering he's matching his drumming style to the guitar off the top of his head is pretty impressive...in that respect hes pretty awesome. and yeah, you have to look away while you listen...makes it much better.

  • that dont mean shit.. just cause hes wailing.. and is into the music.. DOES NOT! mean hes on drugs..

that shit is mad ignorant fuck you candlewhiskey

  • Umm...

I have no witty comment for this.

  • If you think it takes drugs to be creative or eccentric, then you're the dullest of the dull.

  • i dont wanna be the bitch to be like "oh hes crazy he must be on drugs!" but there is no way drugs were not involved with his. he cant go a measure without some kind of over the top seizure!

  • I've met greg a couple of times, he does have a particular form of tourettes

  • you don't have to be high to be greg saunier, but it helps

  • i was with greg on this tour... he's just an unnatural dude. he's a great drummer. no drugs to my knowledge.

  • he gets high...off the drum, lol

  • if you've ever seen them live, this is just how he drums...badass ;)

  • this vids fair shite tbh dunt do the lad justice, check the uva 1s out ther well better >>>>

  • i completely agree, SolBeing

  • this is all on rthym perfectly , but it fools your mind because its not common style.. this is really good. only musicians would understand

  • So you've got to spend big bucks at auniversity to learn to play like this?Wasted your money.

  • I understand this.

  • i love how everyone has something to say about how "retarded" his drumming is and how they could just as easily do it themselves, and yet completely ignore the just as pointless (for lack of more suitable phrasing) guitar noise in the background...

you're all just jealous that someone is doing what you only wish you could do, and doing it well...

  • Yo man you got skills!

  • stupid shit!

  • i can play like that and i don't even know drums,,

  • only someone who knows absolutely nothing about drums would make a comment like that...

  • @thebeastishungry indeed.

  • He's actually pretty good at accenting, and build ups. Listen to him without watching him. I'm sure they wouldn't let him graduate musically if he just played his own stuff.

Look at people like Darren Cesca, they earn a degree and then they play what suits them even though it is just one style that doesn't mean they are musically handicapped.
