  • Hi there, great video, however the link to the Terminal commands file is broken. Could you restore the link to the .txt file as I can't quite read your terminal commands in your video (the quality is not high enough I think)?

  • Hi, is the hidden "drive_C" file something created by Wine via windows that I can delete or is it a part of OSX already and should not be tampered with? I am going to go ahead and used Boot Camp so I need to partition and could use more extra space.

  • how do you check what version of wine you currently have?

  • @millerca1986 I'd assume that there's a command similar to "wine --version".

  • I just installed wine from the website, do I have to do the other steps?

  • I was hoping to learn from this.

Unfortunately, your tongue-flopping, spit sucking into the microphone single-handedly ruined the video for me.

  • The update trick is so cool :D

  • is there mac apps on windows program?

  • can this be done vise versa with this or any other program

  • hi. I have installed wine using terminal. My X11 is up to date. as you say in your video I type wine then press space and bring the installation file in afterwards

This is what it tells me after i try to install world of tanks:

    cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\WoT_beta_0.6.2.7_eng_setup.exe"

    what am I doing wrong?

I know that you probably get a lot of emails concerning this but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • I have wine for ubuntu but it is so bugy! is it that on a mac to?

  • When I try to install Macports I get this error Your existing MacPorts or DarwinPorts installation is too old to be upgraded by this installer. Please install MacPorts 1.7.1 first.. I have never have installed macports so I dont understand this error

  • great for any mac user who wants to run windows programs

  • If you don't mind shelling out $40 you can get a program called crossover by code weavers. It's wine but all the work has been done for you. And you can try it free for 30 days.

  • It happened what 1x800xPockets... :(

  • th you soooooooooooooo much

  • thx

  • Ok, I can't get the hang of this.

Everything installed fine, used it on an *.exe file, and the install went through fine. How do I then use the installed program, since all it did was install it rather than run it?

  • Error: Unable to open port: can't read "build.cmd": Failed to locate 'make' in path: '/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin' or at its MacPorts configuration time location, did you move it?

Error: Unable to execute port: upgrade fontconfig failed

Before reporting a bug, first run the command again with the -d flag to get complete output.

    what is this?

  • ya know you can just download WINE and WINE BOXER and use that because this is a time waster.

  • if you have tiger you can do it you just need to manually install X11

  • I got this error Messeage in Terminal when typing and running the Wine Install Code:

Unable to execute port: can't read "build.cmd": Failed to locate 'make' in path: '/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin' or at its MacPorts configuration time location, did you move it?

  • cross over uses wine i think :) so why pay money for a free program

  • Sorry guy, but when I past "echo export PATH..." the terminala says: "WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss

or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your

typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information." Is it ok to continue or there is a problem with my Mac (or with me)?

  • just install it, that's what i did and it works

  • @xCHAOSCRACKERx Yes, actually it worked.

  • Hey is there a way to run Mac (.dmg) apps on windows 7?Or turn the app files(.dmg) into .exe files? my windows 7 looks EXACTLY like a Mac OSX so i just want mac application because there is no way in paying $1000 for a computer. i have a Toshiba with windows 7.

  • @DrewIsTheXBLHacker

    1. no it is not possible.

    2. you wont be getting a mac for 1000 usd

    3. it is not the look, it is the system that makes a MAC pefect. If you a re looking for styles, just stick with your windows.

  • Okay, this is the error I get when I try to open a Windows Executable File.

    "-bash: wine: command not found"

    Do you have any advice?

  • Couple of issues for me here - one terminal I tried didn't have the little dollar sign - it was a percent sign instead. It wouldn't accept the terminal command. Also, when you do tell Macports to instal Wine, what files do you need to have where in order for that to work correctly? Thank you for posting this, by the way; it was very helpful :)

  • i cant use this wine it said i need to use the upgrade but apparently i need to use wine - devel instead how may i get this?

  • my terminal says, Error: You cannot install wine-devel for the architecture(s) i386 because Error: its dependency expat only contains the architecture(s) x86_64. Error: Error: Try rebuilding expat (and all its dependencies) with Error: the +universal variant by running Error: Error: sudo port upgrade --enforce-variants expat +universal Error: Error: Target org.macports.configure returned: incompatible architectures in dependencies Error: Status 1 encountered during processing. Now what?
  • I'm pretty sure you can just compile it for mac.

  • thanks a lot! it was a very clear and understandable tutorial... now i can play more games on my mac =D

  • i believe mac runs over the same type of software as linux so it would kind of be still the same right?

  • I want to do this on my MacBook but when I go to the macports website there is no 'Leopard Universal' There is only Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger. I don't know which one to click. The site must have changed since this was posted.

  • When did you get your man? And did you update the OS. You need to know what OS Version you're using.

  • I got it December '08. It is a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8

  • @seite84 get leopard universal then.

  • Whenever I try to install wine via the terminal it gives me the error:

WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss

To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

    Password:

When I type my password, it just goes back to a blank command line (jonathan-*********-macbook-pro:~ Jonathan$

  • Are you an admin?

  • Yes.

  • I have WINE installed on My copy of Ubuntu 9.10! :)

  • does this work for sony vegas 9.

  • Great Tutorial, thanks!

Where would Windows registry entries go when programs are installed through Wine?

  • is there a way to run Mac programs on a windows vista ?

  • Nope. Mac programs are made in a strange way that there's no porting method for PCs.

  • Actually you can run Mac as a virtual machine in Windows and run your mac programs that way.

They do run a bit slower than an actual mac though.

  • ok, now, i got it all installed. its working( macport & wine). But i've got one question. can I install more than one .exe file, using one macport. or do i need to install multiple macports?

  • i'm not sure what you mean. Wine runs any exe that you have.

  • after typing sudo port install wine

    i got this error msg

    any idea?

---> Computing dependencies for wineError: Unable to execute port: can't read "build.cmd": Failed to locate 'make' in path: '/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin' or at its MacPorts configuration time location, did you move it?

  • do you have Xcode installed? If so type this command before the other one

    PATH="${PATH}:/Developer/usr/bin"

  • pls ignore my last comment lol

i finished doing everything and i got up to the part where i type "sudo port install wine". i type it exactly but it doesnt install, instead i get this error "---> Computing dependencies for wineError: Unable to execute port: can't read "build.cmd": Failed to locate 'make' in path: '/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin' or at its MacPorts configuration time location, did you move it?"

without the qoutations. do you know this problem?

    thx

  • oh yes you must either not have XCode or have the latest version of Xcode. If you have the latest version. Type this command before the port command:

    PATH="${PATH}:/Developer/usr/bin"

  • thank you very much

  • i also don't get the part when you pasted something on the terminal? what did you paste?

  • can you run two window programs on wine?? such as warcraft 3 and garena??

    great video btw

  • When I run the command:

    sudo port install wine

    I get the response:

---> Computing dependencies for wineError: Unable to execute port: can't read "build.cmd": Failed to locate 'make' in path: '/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin' or at its MacPorts configuration time location, did you move it?

How do I fix this error? Btw, I am running Snow Leopard.

  • yeah i have the same problem and im running snow leopard, is wine compatible with snow leopard

  • ^ same on snow leopard too

  • DUDE! life savveerrrr! thanks man

  • when I hit enter after sudo port install wine, it gave this message: Computing dependencies for wineError: Unable to execute port: can't read "build.cmd": Failed to locate 'make' in path: '/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin' or at its MacPorts configuration time location, did you move it?

    What do I do?

  • dude you are the best thanks i try installing wine before bout you have the best video to show people how to install wine thanks I'm now useing wine thanks

  • you're welcome.

  • Nice video... Thanks...!!!

  • you're welcome.

  • I accidentally deleted X11, how do I get it back again?

  • It came with your mac os x install CD. Google it for more details.

  • can u run pc games?

  • some pc games will work.

  • how do i try them? from a cd i mean. Great vid it worked perfectly

  • oh from a CD that wont work.

  • help help I cant download any of those things I neeed

  • what do you mean???

  • i sub thx

  • Never mind. I just got CrossOver, and used MacPorts for some other software. WINE isn't the only thing you can install using MacPorts.

  • yeah I know macports has a wide selection of things to install.

  • Is there any advantage over Darwine?

  • Help macheads, if i did it wrong, can i just do it again?

  • HELP!!! I have everything installed, but it says wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\ and some random thing. WTF!?

  • first of all, when does it say "C:\\windows\\system32\\". And what says that. You just said "it says", which isn't specific.

  • It shows whenever I try to run any windows program, and it doesn't load.

  • Could you copy and paste the random stuff.

  • Okay, I'm trying to set up a trial version of WinZip. I have the setup file, and I type in: wine winzip121 into the terminal. X11 opens, but then, the terminal shows:

wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\winzip121.exe": Module not found

  • Huh, you may have to configure winzip itself. That is very frustrating. Don't know why.

  • It happens with every program for some reason.

  • I don't know why, try installing it again. If that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

  • Okay so I actually dragged the setup.exe into the terminal from my games folder...however it says It requires XP or Vista...so does that mean I am screwed for all PC games regardless of whether I have Wine or not if I don't have windows?

  • I would guess that the setup program checks what OS it's on and gets Mac instead of any version of windows, meaning that you can't run that program on WINE. Try an app called CrossOver.

  • Good video man, however Im still confused how I run a windows PC game?

  • If you have a Mac OS X install DVD, you can use that to install the Xcode Tools.

  • Insert your Mac OS X install DVD, click on Optional Installs, then click on Xcode Tools, finally, click on Xcode Tools.pkg.

  • Yeah and if you use tiger, use that to get X11 too.

  • can u run a windows mmorpg program with this?

  • Wine cannot handle graphics heavy programs such as World of Warcraft. You still need to install a Windows OS on a Boot Camp partition.

  • or you can install crossover and it works perfectly. I know crossover costs money but you can get the full version for free just search youtube there are tons of videos on how to do that. thats how i did it.

  • The way you do it is against the law. I dislike doing that since I'm a good citizen, and people worked hard on CrossOver, is it really fair that they are being robbed from? If everyone stole software all the time then adobe, Microsoft, and other companies would go out of business.

  • well i know that but do u think my parents would just give the money do buy it? i know i dont so u have to do what u have to do. im a good person too but i cant afford to spend money and experiment with programs. it would be easy if everything were free.

  • Yeah well some people would like to run windows applications for free. If you like crossover more, why not make a video response about it.

  • I get this error when i try to use a sudo command.

    -bash: sudo: command not found

    Help

  • I will personal message you how to fix it

  • Hey, i get the same error as superriku11, i get the error.... how do you fix it?

  • Ok, in terminal type

    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/nano /etc/profile

Then use the arrow keys to go to the bottom of the file. Find where it says

    PA TH

Get rid of the space between PA and TH.

Do that for every PA TH

then press control+x, then hit 'y', then hit enter. Now quit terminal and open it back up.

  • Everything with terminal was working fine until I ran that code in the description and now when I type ls or say or something like that it says exactly this: "-bash: ls: command not found" do you know how to fix this?

  • Well, I just looked in my /bin folder using Finder and all the Terminal command files are still there, but when I type ls it says "-bash: ls: command not found" so this is confusing to me, do you know what I should do?

  • Ok, go into /etc/ and edit a file called profile with text edit. Personal Message me the text inside of that file. Also, do you have iChat and Leopard? If so, we could screenshare and I can try to fix your problem.

  • Ok, I found the sollution. But I will need to share your screen with iChat.

  • I don't have an iChat account.

  • Nevermind, I just got an account.

  • I think I have the solution, but maybe not, I noticed that in the Profile file when I opened it with text edit PATH has a space like PA TH if I removed the space will it work?

  • Yes but I'm not sure you'll have permissions to...

  • I tried to enter the code: echo export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:\$PA TH$'\n'export MANPATH=/opt/local/man:\$MANPATH | sudo tee -a /etc/profile into terminal but it comes back with, "Illegal variable name". What did I do wrong?

  • Unfortunately youtube puts random spaces in the description... I will person message you the command without the spaces.

  • I followed your vid on Xcode and this one but when I type in sudo port instal wine it keeps saying: -bash: sudo: command not found

  • Huh, then it was probably removed because you have a school computer or something... I don't know how to help you. What happens when you type

    sudo ls /

    ?

  • I'm on my personal mac. It says the same thing.

Is there a way I can uninstall wine and try again?

  • Well, wine is not installed at this point, only macports. Ok, so, you need to know the root password. Watch our video on

how to enable 'root' the easy way

since your an admin it should work. Once you have enabled root, type: 'su' in the terminal then the root password. Then type the commands that you were going to type without sudo before them. BTW install has two l's

  • I don't know, why don't you make a video response explaining how to install darwine if you feel that it's better.

  • for the WINE terminal app.. :)

    MertenNor

  • But the WINE terminal app is so easy, just wine space and the name of the app...

  • Can you make a GUI for this ?

    MertenNor

  • A gui for what?

  • Do you think AutoCAD can be run using this?

  • I wouldn't know, try it out.

  • In my opinion I like crossover better... its stabler. Darwine is better then Wine.

  • Yes, I have heard of Darwine. Thanks for your input. If you want, you should make a video response with your opinion and good ideas.

  • this is good but i like crossover better

  • Yeah but I like this more since it's free and open source.

  • Does Crossover work just as well, or is Wine more powerful?

  • I think they pretty much do the same thing accept wine gives you access to the "c drive". Also, WINE is free unlike crossover.

  • i already have wine but gr8 vid

  • Thanks glad you liked it.

  • I Love It
