Supremes never missed a beat without Diana. Jean/supremes and the Funk brothers were ecellent. Up the ladder, another great song/hit without Diana.I think some of their best when she left. The many hits from the "original" group also were great. shame so many great groups split over sharing the spotlight.Same with the Temps, Miracles and others.Individuals can go on to great stuff but the magic of the groups are lost. Gotta love motown!! Never be another like it! True R&B great music/memories
A #1 song for The Supremes on the Rhythm & Blues charts and the final #1 for them on any chart. It was the 218th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era and the final #1 R&B song of 1970. It was #7 on the Top 40 charts, #5 on the Cashbox charts, #3 in the United Kingdom, and #24 on the Adult Contemporary charts.
summer of '72...one, blissful and fleeting moment when several of us barbequed steaks and drank beer in northwest Detroit, We were blacks, whites, arabs and we danced to this music hoping that all the politics could be forgotten and that we could just be FRIENDS!
Beautiful record still. It got played everyday in Detroit on CKLW (Windsor) and WKNR, WCHB and just all the rest. Mary Wilson, Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong! Thank you ladies.
I love this - an absolute delight, a fabulous homage. Well done creating this splendid Motown montage. I was a 60’s kid and this song is so evocative of them there times and those pics are really emblematic of the amazing strides forward. Thanks.
@ivyfield - While Diana Ross may not be on this particular hit, she was a MAJOR contributor to Motown and, like her or not, a very talented artist. She rightly deserves to be on this Motown tribute. Great post, John (MotownMagic1959)!!

This was the first record the Supremes released following the departure of Diana Ross and I remember it was (quite rightly) a massive hit. Still a great record today.
wow a blast from the past i remember singing along to this at a local nightclub every weekend brilliant , songs like this are true classics and the motown era was a time of peace and happiness many can recall

what a great tune... Was Diana in the group at this time... It doesnt sound like she was... But they sound great!!!! Whoever is singing lead she sounds wonderful..
Proving that the Supremes didn't need Diana Ross. The girls were back to singing together again and sounded just great. Check out "Up the Ladder to the Roof" among others.

@marinello6 Thank you for listening, I'm glad you like it, I wish Motown was still turning out these great sounds, but I used to collect all the singles back in the 60's and 70's I'm glad to say. Thanks to all the others for your comments. JOHN
@MotownMagic1959 I wish all of the songs from the sixties and early seventies would make a come back so that I did not have to hear shit like Little Wayne. I really do not get the newer stuff at all and I think that in 15 years when he is old, the next generation will laugh at him. yes Motown will be loved for decades to come, such excellence, now dont forget Dusty Springfield who so adored all motown sound and opened many doors in England, with love and respect to her fellow soul singers, may she R I P.
@Vstar4me Yes indeed Dusty was the best thing that happened for Motown in Britain back in 1965 the "Ready Steady Go" show that she did was brilliant. Wasn't she a fantastic singer too, she used to live near to a friend of mine in London. JOHN
@MotownMagic1959 Cool, yeah Dustys biggest time was the 60s, and she was so hip to have tuned into motown!! How lucky your friend was there in London!!
I understand Dusty adored the soul and blues sounds very early in her life! Telling her Nuns, I want to grow up and be a Blues singer!! ha!
@Vstar4me so nice of you to remember the greatest female voice outside motown-the great Dusty; she definitely opened up the doors for motown.and others as well
@aershamus thank you, I think Dusty heard and knew that very very special edge to singing that Black Women come by so naturally. God is Good and Fair!
Dusty was Hip , and quite Intelligent. One of her happiest moments was being allowed to sing w/ Martha Vandrell.
Even Elvis must credit much of his early influence on his African American Brother neighbors! Who kindly allowed the kid in. We are one people.
I like the way you think, but unfortunately there are still many bigots out there. Live a healthy spiritual life and with that said, there is nothing more to say.
@wellersong7 No matter what we need to hang on to the beautifull 1960s/70s, that brought us all together under one night sky for the love of music, put the Black hand in the White hand and you get rock and roll, then legends would only follow.
Love, Love,Love my Motown. I believe the best music of all time came out of Detoit!! The Mowtown sound changed the whole music industry. There is No doubt about it
My favorite Supremes tune!! Diana Ross did some great songs when she was leading them, but this one holds a special place in my heart. It sends a powerful message of what this country and the rest of the world needs...LOVE FOR EACH OTHER!! 40 years later and it's still a stellar song with that strong feeling of hope and love.
Yes, jabnhook2 so right. I miss those times very much when here in the UK, Motown was always at the top of the charts. The Supremes were good after Diana too, I saw them once on November 39th 1971 and they were so good (with Jean Terrell)!
thanks for this tune motown.. have this on the supremes number ones album, it is actually a longer version.. love the motown stuff especially the song written by the late johnny bristol someday we'll be together .. keep the spirit of real music alive 1!!
I'm puzzled do you not read the title at the top or my review? it's Stoned Love by The Supremes and was a No 1 track in 1970, you were only just born then right? JOHN
Big up to our sisters who voices touch not only my soul, but millions across the world.
The Supremes were just a great soul group, whether Sister Diana, Sister Mary and Sister Flo up to Sister Jean and Sister Cindy, they were just class, our sisters, The Supremes.
This is one of the first records I bought as a child. Saved up every cent I had for The Supremes(back then all you needed was pocket change). Thanks for the memories!
I was 14 when this song was at the top of the charts. I loved it then and I am so enjoying here on YouTube. The Supremes turned out some great music even after Diana left the group, as this song shows.
I wish the music today sounded more like this. I notice the music I listened too growing up had a beginning, middle and an end.
A song today just stays the same throughout the song. No change in tempo and no refrain.
James Jemerson and the rest of the Funk Brothers, Motown's band, were the greatest musicians there ever was in my book for getting on to 50 years they played in the background on every Motown single and track! although many of them are no longer here I will always remember them, how many will agree with me? :-) JOHN
Sorry that should have read November 29th 1971! I saw them at the Dome here in Brighton, where ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest around that time :-) JOHN
a true classic that will be played for years to come, this song will out last any record that is produced today because it was created by people with true passion for music and enjoying what they was doing
I liked how the dubbed synth riff is amped up just a bit more in this Youtube version. Motown songs that went synth or psych always went dub to please the Nixon audiences which annoyed me. I hope they find the recording where the synth doesn't sound so dubbed but then again with the right amplification, it maintains a certain charm. Because of that synth, this is the Supremes' best song as well as the singing.
Glad you liked my collection, you may have seen the Motown 50th Aniversary Programme on BBC 1 today Friday January 9th. I was very sorry to hear Norman Whitfield of Motown(Temptations) had just died, too!
Hi Colettedave, The Supremes didn't record Touch Me In The Morning..Diana Ross as a solo did, in 1973. This Supremes record is the one with Mary, Cindy and Diana's replacement in 1970, Jean Terrell. (That other's a great song, too, though!) ;)
this bass ..this bass ..this bass ...and this bass again
would give me enough energy for the rest of my life

I hope they find the recording where the synth doesn't sound so dubbed but then again with the right amplification, it maintains a certain charm. Because of that synth, this is the Supremes' best song as well as the singing.

Glad you liked my collection, you may have seen the Motown 50th Aniversary Programme on BBC 1 today Friday January 9th. I was very sorry to hear Norman Whitfield of Motown(Temptations) had just died, too!

This is easily the most melodic and propulsive of all the Supremes songs. A masterpiece :)

This went to #1 on the Soul charts in '70. Impressive since 'the girls' hadn't been on those charts for a while...
The most soulful of all Supremes' records...
don'tcha hear the wind blowin'? Jean, what a voice!

This song hit # 1 the day I was born and that's why it's my second favorite song of all time along with Reflections.
