It lacks the scroll ,just as the MSX2 version, but in a way its as good a conversion as the NES one. And dont forget that these games were like 5-6 euros-dollars back then on the 8 bit computers ,while the slighty superior NES ports (if superior at all,in some cases the 8 bit computers were as good if not better) were much more expensive.
You know what? Except for the screens not scrolling smoothly along I think that the game's graphics are just as good as, if not a touch better, than the Nintedo's. The sound is obviously not as good but this actually looks a bit more like the arcade than the NES. Nintendo was notorious for having developers take arcade games and putting their own look and play to them... for example: strider, bionic commando, TMNT, robocop and countless others.
@GamingPalooza Yeah. It reminds me how Sega of America did something pretty similar with a console back then. They were so ashamed of the Mega Drive, they called it a different name to disguise it!
@WeskerSega What are you talking about? Neither Sega nor Konami changed these titles for "being ashamed". If that was the case, they just didn't have released anything in the first place. The change from Contra to Gryzor was due to the Iran-Contra incident, which took place at that time - the arcade game was renamed like that in Europe too. As for the Mega Drive, it was renamed Genesis in America for license reasons, because the "Mega Drive" name was already registered by another company.
@Holothurion Dude, you should revise your sense of irony. Either that, or save your reply for GamingPalooza. Do you really think I didn't know everything you just said? My comment was just a mockery answer to what GamingPalooza wrote before.
@WeskerSega Sorry pal, my comment was directed towards GamingPalooza. I just clicked the wrong user and didn't noticed it until it was posted. My mistake.
@GamingPalooza I'm sorry, but you're so retarded. First of all, Konami did not make this port, it was Ocean. Second, to think that this port is so bad means that you're absolutely ignorant and like jumping to conclusions. Third, if giving it a different name to disguise it was because they were ashamed of it, you might as well say that Konami was ashamed of the original arcade Contra: because in Europe, even the original arcade Contra is called GRYZOR. Just like this. You have an explanation?
It was known as Gryzor in Europe and some Island regions. It was known as Contra everywhere else. It was Ocean that was Licensed by Konami to "produce" ports of Contra for computers, but it was Konami that developed the game. In fact, the first Japanese release of "Contra" on the Famicom had extra content in the game that was left out of the American NES release because Nintendo of Japan permitted Konami of adding their own mappers to the game. So, I suggest u stop PMS'n over "Gryzor".
@GamingPalooza It's hard not to "PMS" when your comments are so full of inaccuracy. And boy are you wrong when you say Konami developed this port. Where did you get that information from? Yourself? You just guessed that and believe that's correct. The European home computer ports of Gryzor were developed in-house by Ocean. Konami was NOT part of that development team, just because their name is on the title screen.
Why don't you get some tampax? Anyways... Ya, Konami authorized Ocean to port the game but Ocean only produced the ports, go look it up. These games were ported off of what Konami developed already. There is a difference between producing and developing, and you might want to get your facts straight. Also, "Tampax", available at your local Walmart or CVS, invest in them.
@GamingPalooza Jeez, you're a moron. Just because Konami developed the original arcade game DOES NOT mean that they developed these ports or had a huge influence on the direction of development. It's called in-house for a reason. The video at hand is about an Ocean port of GRYZOR, not the arcade version. Oh, and in terms of gaming, Ocean DEVELOPED the computer ports. That's no exception. And stop being a hypocrit. Are you even aware that arcade Contra in Europe is called Gryzor?
@GamingPalooza Wow, you're retarded. Where did you get those "statistics" from? Mobygames? gamespot? Or just another site where random users contribute game information? Also, if you actually did your research, you'd know that the C64 version of Contra was released in North America by Konami; Gryzor, the European version, was released by Ocean. But THEY developed the game.
All Gryzor ROM's have music. He did a vid recording trick and merged the music with sound. Normally, you can only have either music or sound, not both. To enable between music/sound, press esc at the main menu before beginning game.
Pitfall or Jet Set Willy... there was no scrolling too ;D probably could not be done smooth Contra with this such a nice graphics on Amstrad because of it's hardware limits :)
This was one of the few CPC games I completed (no cheating). SPOILERS. At the end the world blows up and there's an advert for the soundtrack single. I think the last level is a bit different from other versions but it does involve some sort of UFO monster and the big heart at the end (got that with the rapid shot!).
Also, at the base, it might've worked better to jump on that little ledge right as the black shots disappeared, then jumping onto the middle ledge. Would've made it easy to toast that one guy.
You suck at this game.

Wrong... Wrong.. wrong... Ocean did not develop anything.. they just produce it and distributed it... look
The Commadore 64 version of it
Publisher:Ocean
Developer:Konami
Genre:2D Platformer
Release Date:1988
well, what do you know?? Do you see who the developer is? Do you see who the publisher is?? Well... maybe you will learn something today.
Ocean only produced most of the copies and ported the CPC copy.

Have you played the Amstrad version? If so, can you tell me:
How to get music and sound at the same time? Mine, I can only have one or the other.
If you beat the game, did your version have a Snowfield section? It seems there is none.

For music and FX you need to have 128K of ram.

Yeah, but you can't do both at the same time.
