What a waste of a decent tower, would have been better to leave it and use it for mobile phone / internet no hassles getting permissions then to put up a mast.
Once the suburb is full of people they all will complain of horribile mobile phone / internet and want it improved but they do not want the tower / antennas to make it happen, silly NIMBY people.
Don't know when it was knocked down but the mast was amongst all commercial AM masts around View bank and Lower Plenty,VIC. Peter Byrne claims he could bring "3uz 930" in as far as The Story Bridge in Birsbane eager to hear Don Lunn on the number 1 radio station in Aus in the days of great radio. The Dj's included Sam Anglsea, Allan Lappin,Jimmy Hannan,Bill Gates,Ken Sparkes,John Vertigan,Johnny Chester,Graeme Cherry,Stan Rofe,Rod Spargo,Peter Byrne,John Deeks
Listen closely to the ads for Carpet City. At 1:13 the address is 574a North Rd, Ormond. Then at 1:51 it's moved to 584 North Rd, Ormond. Did they have two stores, or was it John Deek's stuffing up?
What a waste of a good AM transmission tower. I bet the new one does not work as well as the old one would have. 2NZ 1188 Northern New England has a tower similar to this design. It cracks out. Listen in at night time. Thank god it's in the middle of no where where greedy men wont knock it down.
Fuck this video is funny. Thanks for the post you little legend. All they had to do was cut all but one cable and then pull it over with a tracter attached to the remained one - I can't see the Pythagoras theorem hitting him in the head there, maybe - would do that calculation first.
Or, cut all the cables, wack one of those 9/11 WTC thermate cutter charge jobs on the base, then let it fall in what direction the wind blow.
Did I see a rod in the video..check it out when the time is at 2:41 something goes through the view from left to right around the middle of the screen. I saw a show on rods and it looks like one to me. Its very quick.
Does the phrase anti-climax mean anything to you? I was brought up in Viewbank very close to this location and there were several similar towers in the area. The saddest thing about it was that John Deeks was not sitting on top of it at the time of the demolition!!!!
The voice you hear on this clip, card carrying pain in the arse. Just a voice over bloke but grates on me like you would not believe. About as sincere as Liz Taylor saying ouch on her wedding night!!!
that awful radio jingle drivel - information content vansihingly small, irritation level unbounded. demolohing that was a service to mankind - in fact a service to God
I remember 3UZ from the seventies: Bert Newton, John Deeks, Don Lane, races, country music, "Radio Auditions" followed by "Newsbeat" on Sunday mornings, "3-way Turf Talk", and its memorable news theme. Deeksy was a great DJ in those days.
Terrific montage of old 3UZ audio and the bilge that used to come out of that tower for 52 years. Such a nice tower. Such a waste. Or was it??!! 5 stars.

For Bobs sake, get to the point! I do not listen to radio, i do not own a television set just because of these stupid commercials.
But perhaps this is the point of this video, that really managed to annoy me. -Thumbs down, and i do it again just out of reflex.

Sounds fantastic on digital and still great AM coverage too. Lots of tuned loops on hotels and TABs across region.

Crimeny... people actually *listen* to stations that broadcast this stuff??
It was a nice tower, though

Carpet City was in an old movie theater that was quite big and may have covered a few addresses
along Nth Rd and also i think they may have had a few shop fronts as well

So sad to see it go, My father helped build the tower and worked at 3uz back in the day

Sorry but it is just a boring bird. I had a look at the
original HD footage and the shots from another cams on a wider angel and it is plainly a bird
chasing an insect or something. Anyway i checked
out what rods are and now i know. You lean a new thing every day. Will keep a lookout.

Rods....lol!
They've been proven time and time again to be just normal bugs with an elongated/multiple winged appearance due to the camera shutter and motion blur.
Don't believe everything you see on TV!

i could of had them turn it over to me i could of made a good rock station

Great video Dave, I give it 5 stars. Bit sad to see an old tower turned into scrap in seconds, now we know how to take a station off air.
Gee..I know where there's a really big mast near Sydneham.
