  • Diamond Star Motors* "DSM" was an automobile-manufacturing joint venture between the Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC).

    So, in the end... All products made by both Mitsubishi and Chrysler (including engines!) Are considered DSM, until 1999. So, eagle talons, eclipses rs,gs,gst,gsx,etc are considered products of diamond star motors

  • @fieryfury3 you do realize DSM means diamond star motors. and "diamond star" reffers to the mitsubihi logo. you do realize DSM and mitsubihi are the same thing, right?

  • i had a 98 rs and are weak sauce those 420a suck balls. if you ever do something to a gs or rs go for an srt4 or evo8 swap ; ) the 420a engine gave me problems all the time and i seen it on other cars as well

  • Thats why they based the Srt.4 motor off of the 420A not the 4g63 alot more reliable stronger motor and easier to work on too yes I own a 97 eclipse RS and starting to get money together to turbo it and my buddy has a 05 srt4 everything from the intake manifold to the Timing belt is all in the same place Only thing that is different is where the fuel injecters are, 420A is under the intake manifold, srt4 are above down pipe

  • Also ill bet that the internals of the srt-4 are much different then the N/A 420a in your RS..... would not be surprised if the ratio's are also significantly different too!

  • I had a GS Eclipse I threw a Hahn kit on a while back. Save yourself the trouble. Sell it and buy a GST or GSX. The 420a won't hold the power and it will be a rebuild project day in and day out. For how cheap a GST or GSX is compared to building a boosted GS isn't worth it. Speaking from experience I don't own that Eclipse anymore. I moved on. Good luck with the build if you really think it's worth it.

  • not really haveing takin both of these motors apart the srt4 blocks are suprisingly weak ive seen numerouse cases where the t4 blocks have one or both of the ears for the lower bell housing broke clean off. And the blocks are different 420a blocks dont have the spaces on the backto drill out for cooling and oil lines.

  • @Skippy3931 You must really not know anything about the 4g63. The 420a is no where near as strong as a 4g63. The highest WHP 420a is around 600. Same with the srt-4 motor which is maybe a little more then 600, and then we have the 4g63 which is around 1300-1400 in drag applications, and tons of 1000hp DD's.

  • @Skippy3931 LMFAO quit sqewing shit out ur mouth kid, the 420a is NOT more reliable then the 4g63 -__- and let me get this straight, ur buddies injectors are above his downpipe? so there on the exhaust side of the engine.... i think thats a big problem there. but ill let u in on a little secret, mitsu wouldnt put a better engine in the eclipse and a shitty one in there flag ship car :/ and thats just the truth

  • @Skippy3931 the 420a is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to dsm motors, that's why they used the 4g63 in the Evo for so long.

  • Stock 420A=140 horsepower

    Stock 4g63=165 Horsepower

    420A=4 bolt main

    4g63=2 bolt main

    420A even though its a Dodge motor it has the potential to go right on past a Gst or Gsx and their alot more reliable motor once you change the internals (pistons/connecting rods etc.)

    My point being 420A is a very strong motor just dodge felt cus it is N/A it didnt need the Upgraded internals a 4g63 has and there for kept it N/A until a person figures out their actually very good power plants ; )

  • I call bullshit, ive had a 420a and it was the weakest most unreliable engine ive ever had. It developed rod knock for no reason. Screw that motor, 4g63t can atleast make power. If you compare upgrading the internals of both of these engines, the 4g63 can actually hit over 1k hp, while the 420a will never hit it, so its not strong at all

  • Dude the internals of a turbo 4g63 are different then a N/A 4g63.... you gotta check your info before you post nothing but B.S..... I have had 2 1g turbo talons and 2 2g N/A talons, and the turbo cars are by far the best platform to get mad hp out of.... I would never waste my time or money putting a turbo on my 420a motors.... just dumb!

  • 420A's are Mopar motors. DSM is the 4G63's. 420A Eclipse is basically a Dodge Neon. Except Neons have a wider final gear ratio.

  • Well, I got budget boost... It cost me just over $1,000 to boost. That's doing the installation myself too. I think it's worth it rather than getting a 4G63 and never know when you'll get crank-walk. Just don't boost over 8lbs and get an SAFC controller to tune air/fuel. Goes a long way compared to blowing your motor!

  • i love DSM, i just dont like the ones with Chrysler motors, id definetly rock a 7bolt GSX and enjoy getting cranwalked. just id never own anything with a 420a regardless if its a neon or a GS/RS eclipse. i like torque wich is why im happy with my KA, add 10 PSI and im walking 20 PSI sr20's

    bottom line, if i want a DSM, im getting one with all mitsu, 4G63 or bust (with 7 bolts you get both haha)

  • dude the 420a isnt that bad..sure its slower that the 4g63, and it makes it look even slower cause its turbo charged with a garret t25. but still, its got 140 horse, and if u boost it with a good turbo in stock internals, you lookating at about 175-180 horse, its a good motor, just not the fastest. and regardless, the car looks good

  • thats my issue with the 420,with the money youd put into it you get 180, with the same amount you could have a 200+ HP GST, hell you just need to turn up the boost a lil on a GST/X for t to make 200

  • id take a 420a any day..gst gsx are expensive as hell so you have to start somewhere and work your way up..my brother drove a 95 gs with gsx wheels and gsx spoilers for over a year and it ran great and it did the job, but it did get old and the motor blew, but through the time he had the gs, he had saved enough to get a 97gstspyder, and he just bought a bigegr turbo with better parts and now it has 300+ horse

  • I agree with you. These 420a engines aren't that great. My mom's sebring has one and I have never been impressed it has no torque or power. idk how much of a difference a turbo would make. My KA felt a lot faster when it was N/A love the torque
