  • This brought a tear to my eye. Thanks guys

  • I drove to East Lansing to watch the Homecoming parade the last three years on Friday night and was shocked to see the band in tee shirts and blue jeans. That evening on Flint Channel 12 news, they showed the band marching in uniform.....must have been file footage. Certainly not from that day, as I was there. The band sounded OK, but come on. The Michigan band would never be seen in public out of uniform.

  • I marched 1992-1995 Grambling State University "World Famed" Marching Band! Our style as well as several other HBCU bands (Jackson State, Southern) came directly from MSU! Most schools won't admit it but Grambling does. Our first band director Dr. Conrad Hutchison is on the record several times stating "Gramblings Marching Style" comes directly from MSU. For years Grambling only used "Nickel Plated " horns but that has now changed. It is so amazing to watch the band ....... Go Spartans!!!!!

  • @hlywood72 Well, of course if you're talking about band or anything else, everyone style for the most part comes from the first person or the first people or entity to do something. A lot of high school bands who try to mix traditional and corps style together could probably learn a lot from watching MSU

  • OSU and MSU def. have the best bands in the Big Ten as well as the country. The awesome thing is that they have a great respect for one another! They both know that they always strive to be the best. I'm in TBDBITL and I'll stick by that name until I die ;) but if there is another band that I like and want to listen too it's MSU. I hope they say the same for us. Hope you guys can come down whenever you play OSU again.

  • i love the Alma Mater!!! my God!!! Beautiful!!!

  • MSU. The first real love of my life.

  • Its wierd that the drum majors, dont actually conduct...

  • i've already decided i'm going into the MSU Marching band....only problem is i'm a clarinetist and theres no clarinets in the band lol...but i'm gonna switch to snare...so hopefully i'll be on the MSU drumline lol

  • Great video! Very nice marching, lots of intense traditions. The coordination of those backbends is impressive, as is the flag work. And congrats to Rachel for achieving her position as 2nd woman DM!

And yes, I do go to the University of Michigan. Go Blue!

  • its ok we spartan people forgive u for going to the dark side. haha jk

  • Spartan! Marching Band!Spartan! Marching Band!Spartan! Marching Band!

    Go State!

  • Very fine video work - from a gentleman I am so pleased so have had at least some impact on during his school years!!!

(even if he is a Spartan) :)

  • As a showband/traditional style member/fan I love this doc. Gives insight into a different style and MSu is one of the most well known bands in this country!

  • i like this video i play drumline in high school now play in Lakeshoremen Drum and Bugle Corps

    dumline go go smb

  • God, I'd hate to high step. It looks cool, but painful at the same time. =(

  • they only high step for the series and pregame. other than that they do corps style marching.

  • cuzzz ur a wimp haha, there is no other way

  • wow you did not just say osu is more intense...

  • OSU is a good band, but don't mistake a fuller sound for a band that simply has flutes and clarinets. Those instruments contribute in rounding out the sound. You really can't compare the sound of the two bands, as the SMB has only brass instruments with the exception of saxes, but as far as discipline and sheer power go, the SMB wins hands down.

  • OMG leave those goddamn DCI out of here they have nothing to do with college marching bands.

  • Great video! I played trumpet from 60-64, the Moffit years and have played in many Alumni games and events since it started in 71. I would agree the series was finalized around 66. Of course, the type of drums used makes a difference. My section was the still early in the video, led by the bass drum of the still active Jerry Spry lol. Glad the band has carried on tradition and made their own contribution. Now if someone could find our 60's films.........

  • high stepp it man!

  • Nice job. I think the series was finalized in the 60's. My guess is 66 but that might be a couple years off. That would be over 40 years ago.

  • From one SMB (old alumni), you have hit everything on the nail. I love that things we did still stand today and know that it will continue forever. GO SMB!!

  • Great job guys!

  • This is awesome! You did a wonderful job with this! Especially the end with Shadows. Well done!

  • GO GREEN!!

  • Awesome video!

  • FANTASTIC video -- I miss you guys! The band needs more great press like this.

p.s. Corner says Ham is one sexy beast.

  • on another note, i know TBDBITL enjoyed our time in E. Lansing...you guys are probably more welcoming than any other Big Ten school...your alma mater is pretty amazing...second only to Carmen Ohio

  • thank you! i think we get along for the mutual hatred of the other crappy team. Glad you enjoyed east lansing! Beat michigan when you play em... we took care of business... you do the same!

  • i wish our director would take note of your gameday routine....getting to go home and nap....thats awesome. i usually go 4:30am-5:00pm straight for a noon game.

  • Lol most of us do too. I think our drum majors are priviledged! If we do get a nap it's only for a half hour or so. nothing major.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Sweet video! Beat Blue!

  • Amazing!

  • Awesome video, Andy! Good job!

  • Great Video . . . Well Done.

  • This rocks Andy!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Hey that is totally cool! Well done!
