@SnowWhiteBears look up the video here on youtube called "Hippo Eat Zebra (after Croc)". It shows a hippo eating a dead zebra that some crocs killed. If you think hippos never eat meat, you are definitely wrong. They just don't eat it as their primary food source.
@SnowWhiteBears hippos kill people all the time. Not in "self defense" but because they have terrible tempers. Like bulls. They are more dangerous than crocs. And yes, they are herbivores, but putting the tiny head of a dying animal like that in that huge mouth is probably going to scare the impala to death if it doesn't smother it. He may have been trying to help it, but he probably only helped it die faster.
i wrote a love story based on this called "the waterfall" found at vivianpetzer.blogspot as i felt there was more to the hippo than we understand hope you like it.
I suspect this is a narrative the nature documentary spun up to thrill naive viewers who have seen too much Bambi and don't realize how brutal the natural world really is.
This behavior can probably be explained as territorial in nature, not altruistic. The hippo most likely objected the the presence of the crocodile hunting in its territory. It also objected to the Impala's presence but was less bothered as the Impala is a small herbivore. Look at 0:40, not very gentle or friendly imo.

And humans want to say they are so great.balderdash! There is compassion in the non human animals like that of the creator who made them. The zoosexual knows this loving creator through the amazing animals that God made . love the zoo who is seeking, and gives love even as the love you saw with two unlikely species.
I agree that assuming the hippo is trying to revive the calf is dumb, but ignoring the dumb narrator, the hippo is being surprisingly gentle with the calf whether it's territorial or not. Hippos aren't really known for being cuddly or nuzzling hurt babies. There are several remarkable stories of animals showing an odd level of compassion for species not their own, and we still don't, and maybe never will, understand why.
The most we can do is learn from it. If not love, respect.
@ladykillerrr Its not being very gentle at the river bank. It makes some very threatening head motions to get the Impala to flee. Characterizing the Hippo's contact as "nuzzling" and claiming the hippo was trying to revive the impala by mouthing its head is baseless assumptions. Most likely the hippo is further demonstrating dominance, or it is simply curious and playing with the hippo, much in the way a person might poke a dead thing with a stick.
@Blobsterisation No, I was insulting the original poster, his response was in response to another person. The first poster was the retarded, the second the illiterate. You were not involved. Although I can't say I'm a fan of all the short hand and net speak.
@AVIATIO The hippo has probably mauled dozens of harmless animals to death in its lifetime. Hippos are highly territorial and one of the most aggressive species in Africa.
Hippos HATE crocs. They have the same racial hatred for crocs that lions have for hyenas.
As for the altruistic behavior that this hippo seemed to show to the maimed deer, no explanation, except that perhaps the hippo (unidentified as male or female) may have lost a baby or a sibling or aged parent to a croc. Crocs will attack baby hippos any chance they can...like hyenas will kill and eat lion cubs at every opportunity.
@AmMedAss1 I really think its just misinterpreted territorial behavior. Think of the way dogs will establish dominance by holding another dog by the throat.
@tjohn1986 what would that have to do with him being gay? Would it suffice if an ignorant homophobe with a large penis and a manly voice narrated this scene? You know, showing indifference to sensitivity and TRYING to be overly macho only makes YOU look like the "faggot" by having an obsessive need to appear "heterosexual"
yes like the narrator said its not the hippos meal but how can the dear run with energy after its been saved then die all of a sudden like foreal? last energy use?
This from a guy who works with hippos for a living:
After the hippo left the water to 'help' the impala calf, it tossed it's head. That's an aggressive act.
It looked like a bull hippo. It was probably being territorial, trying to pick a fight with anything that was causing a commotion. Once the croc left, all that was left to mess with was a half-dead impala calf.
And needless to say, a hippo does not understand or appreciate giving CPR.
Large herbivores tend to help other herbivores live..I was watching this doc. on Natgeo Wild, and an african buffalo herd went to help a smaller herbivore thingy :D I aww'ed :)
I hope the title is suppose to be a joke because first of all it says in the video that it is an impala not a deer and second it should be "Hippo trying to help impala stay alive."

But hippos only eat meat during the zebra crossing, when a herd of zebras cross the water and an alligator kills ones.
A hippo would sneek up and eat the left overs. But thats extremly rare!
