And yes, they are herbivores, but putting the tiny head of a dying animal like that in that huge mouth is probably going to scare the impala to death if it doesn't smother it. He may have been trying to help it, but he probably only helped it die faster.

I suspect this is a narrative the nature documentary spun up to thrill naive viewers who have seen too much Bambi and don't realize how brutal the natural world really is.

This behavior can probably be explained as territorial in nature, not altruistic. The hippo most likely objected the the presence of the crocodile hunting in its territory. It also objected to the Impala's presence but was less bothered as the Impala is a small herbivore. Look at 0:40, not very gentle or friendly imo.

I agree that assuming the hippo is trying to revive the calf is dumb, but ignoring the dumb narrator, the hippo is being surprisingly gentle with the calf whether it's territorial or not. Hippos aren't really known for being cuddly or nuzzling hurt babies. There are several remarkable stories of animals showing an odd level of compassion for species not their own, and we still don't, and maybe never will, understand why.

The most we can do is learn from it. If not love, respect.

@ladykillerrr Its not being very gentle at the river bank. It makes some very threatening head motions to get the Impala to flee. Characterizing the Hippo's contact as "nuzzling" and claiming the hippo was trying to revive the impala by mouthing its head is baseless assumptions. Most likely the hippo is further demonstrating dominance, or it is simply curious and playing with the hippo, much in the way a person might poke a dead thing with a stick.

Hippos HATE crocs. They have the same racial hatred for crocs that lions have for hyenas.

As for the altruistic behavior that this hippo seemed to show to the maimed deer, no explanation, except that perhaps the hippo (unidentified as male or female) may have lost a baby or a sibling or aged parent to a croc. Crocs will attack baby hippos any chance they can...like hyenas will kill and eat lion cubs at every opportunity.

This from a guy who works with hippos for a living:

After the hippo left the water to 'help' the impala calf, it tossed it's head. That's an aggressive act.

It looked like a bull hippo. It was probably being territorial, trying to pick a fight with anything that was causing a commotion. Once the croc left, all that was left to mess with was a half-dead impala calf.

And needless to say, a hippo does not understand or appreciate giving CPR.
