They way that the bbc documented the other episodes in this series was complete shit, but they did a good job with this episode and The Indie brit pop stuff.
I love how people are still calling this music "Alternitave." How, cutely suburban. Look, all the Zack and kellys who think its alright to call a variety of different sounding bands by a name, as if its a genre, think first. Its rock and roll idiots.
@AdelineJefferson Okay, i get what you're saying. yes, the labels were added later and a lot of the bands didn't even associate themselves with them. hah, now that i know what you're saying, I agree.
Alternative, what a cluster-fuck of an oxymoronic classification of music. It's meant to be taken as, "Alternative to what's being played on the main radio stations" but at the same time, it was what was being played on the main radio stations.
Just another lame tag Rolling Stone came up with to help sell Rock and Roll in a shiny new box.
i was suprised the first time i watched this that after the first 5 episodes there was a whole episode about american music bcuz rock started in america paricularly the american south with chuck berry 10 years b4 the stones and 5 b4 the beatles
hey guys i live in australia melbourne and i was wondering is there any radio station that plays bands like AFI ,nirvana, slipknot, anti flag , sexpistols all the time cause if u do knoe could u tell me that would be really helpful
damn, i'm looking back at my comment i made on this almost a year ago. wut an ass i was. i guess i was frustrated cuz i was trying to find new music that i would enjoy couldnt find any
i think the main reason y i put down nirvana so much is because of Smells Like Teen Spirit. i guess its not the band's fault it was played so much. i'v heard other nirvana songs that were pretty good and i wonder y they were hardly played on the radio. guess its all about the ratings and requests
this documentary is awesome but you can't help but feel bad for the people who didn't do this and worked at Mcdonalds and serving slurpies who still work there with no future flipping burgers.
I would think Black Flag would go into the punk episode, but chronologically, I guess it makes sense...
Let's just lay off each other's tunes and discuss them like actual music fans. Not everyone agrees with someone's musical tastes...but yes, Good Charlotte does suck.
you're absolutely right..I was going to say something similar..with less cursing but you're right. it annoys me because they are terrible and punk is great.
man people get pissed off wen other people don't like their music or if someone makes a mistake. chill out, like what u want, pepole are intitled to listen to whatever they want
and people are entitled into saying what they want to say about somebody's music. which is what leads to debates and discussions that you don't really see on sites like this or other social sites.
"Read about your band, in some local page - didn't mention your name..." - 'Left Of The Dial' is one of the greatest songs ever. And Husker Du owns all.
INFLUENCED alternativ bands? more like made ppl sick of the music they had on the radios so they decided to create something much better of their own, all thanx to REM. they started alternativ genre, which totally gave rock music meanings
now u saying that bands like Alice In Chains, Matchbox 20, Lenny Kravitz, and 311 were influenced by cheap wannabes like blak flag just makes me lmao, but also kinda pisses me off since ur probably thinking so-called alternative bands like all american rejects
and all american rejects also sucked and they'r the bastards that raped the alternative sound and made it sound mor like punk! well, nirvana also takes some fault in that since they started that stoner's rock called grunge, which alot of ppl mistake for alternativ! GOD it pisses me off when i say something about alternativ rock and ppl think i'm thinking of fuckin grunge!
overall, REM were the kings of music when they came around because they gave the world the special gift of the original alternativ sound, which is true music. and that sound rubbed off on bands like, well like i mentioned b4, bands like Matchbox 20, Lenny Kravitz, 311, and somewut on Alice In Chains (listen to "Nutshell"). they r all wut music should be!
Hardcore and punk were a big influence on alternative bands in the mid 80s! Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Pixies,Husker Du etc. Even the alternative poster boys Nirvana embraced hardcore and punk. Dave Grohl was after all in a number of hardcore bands before joining Kurt and Krist. And "No" Nirvana did not start grunge. Actually they were one of the last bands of the scene. They pushed to sound into mainstream but did not create it.
Black Flag were not cheap wannabes. Dont focus just on what mainstream calls "Alternative" bands like Matchbox 20 and Lenny Kravitz?
R.E.M Where the first alt-band that achieved comercial succes but did not create it. Check out bands like The Velvet undergorund and post-punk bands like Television, Talking Heads,Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus.
You can see what would later become Alt-rock in those bands.
sonicdeath24. hey man, you replied to me on my comments i made over a year ago. i'm looking at them now and realizing, man, i was pretty naive. i've been doing more research on this stuff with the alt-rock genre. i'm doing a school project on it and i'm in need of some accurate information. do you think you could help me out?
i just mainly need to know of a few more bands from the early generation of the genre, u know? but i also have some questions that this video doesnt answer. would you mind if i messaged them to you?
I agree. vh1 is ran by hippie retards that think nirvana was like jimmy hendrix. fucking tards. geordie walker of killing joke had more talent in his pinky than hendrix had in his whole hand.
Why did they do an american only show when the other shows weren't that way?
Hmm is it because bands like, P.I.L., Duran Duran, Billy Idol, U2, gary numan, bahaus, The Cure, New Order, devo, love + rockets, tears for fears, Depeche Mode, killing joke, were more alternative and well known than the shit bands they showed? I think so.
they didn't cover those bands you blathering idiot. alternative started in britain with PIL and the cure. then mtv started showing it and later they had that show called 120 minutes in the mid 80s. alt. music wasn't grunge. please buy some fucking neurons.
yea that last point just proved to me you'll never get laid! but how the hell can they go into all alternative rock? if you want to go into some depth you have to leave out some other bands!
incesticide and zen arcade are are excellent albums

Modern "alternative": Arcade Fire? Death Cab for Cutie? please.....

@d3reilly Its just cute that you have to label everything. "Alternative" "Grunge" when many of the bands did not even have the same sound.
