  • Thumbs up if you want an undiluted, non-kiddy film version of Northern Lights to make up for this complete turd of a book-film transition.

  • @inamonianim Haha agreed. And an equally good book-film transition of TSK and TAS while they're at it - though I wouldn't mind them making the end of TAS a little happier lol

  • @rhidiandavies1991 The mistake they made with this film is that they wanted to make a film that kids could watch. If they'd kept all the subtle criticisms of the church authority as well as the references to sexual awareness and coming of age present in the book, it would have risen the age limit to 12 or PG13 in the US.

  • The book beats the film by miles. Have a guess why.

  • I love this film and think that it's one of the most overlooked and underrated Fantasy films since 2000 (along with Stardust and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Visual effects were decent. Nicole Kidman was stunning and very beautiful villainess. Dakota Blue Richards and Daniel Craig were great too. Hope they'll make a sequel

  • I agree that there needs to be a Director's cut, simply re-do some of the scenes and stay true to the books, the ending in particular is very important. I don't understand why he did it this way, I really don't.

  • @KuroiiTenshii there was a interview with the director i read, and he said something like he filmed it with best intentions, and the final editing and organising wasnt down to him, and that he was upset with the end result. Sounds like he was on our side all along, but i so wish he could do a directors cut. :(

  • i liked the movie , but i didn't understand the ending, but now i saw this i'm even more confused how does the story really end? and why was her father acting like that?? maybe i should read the book :P

is there gonna be a second movie??

  • @catjoox31 Well, at first i well tell that yes, it will be a second movie, the screenpley had been writed and it'll start filming at october, november of this year... So maybe the movie will be able at 2012 or maybe 2013. It will be called "The Subtle Knife" And for you, that you didn't read the book: the finale you saw was the 20th chapter of 23! the last three chapters were also filmed but NewLineCinema will put them at "the first [NEW] 3 chapters of the second movie"! :D I'M WAITING FOR!

  • @Iscaldor aah ok thank you :)

  • @catjoox31 ;D

  • @catjoox31 In the book, Lyra is actually captured by Gobblers and taken to Bolvangar BEFORE she ends up in Svalbard. After going to Svalbard, they find Asriel who captures Roger (not sure why, still to read the rest of the book). That's how the game ends anyway, and the game is much more faithful to the books. I recommend either playing that or reading the book to fully understand - I've still to read the last few pages of the book :)

  • jéé...eva green :) i love her english accent

  • This movie sucked

  • Wait.. this movie wasn´t released was it? is this the next one of the Golden Compass? O:

  • @14ManuelaSL no its actually the ending of the Golden COmpass actually, it was cut from film because it fit the end of a movie better since the second and first book had no connection and it ended rather badly and apbruptly

  • @AliceHaleCullen Oh... wellthanks for clearing that up! :) I wish they had done the 2nd one S:

  • @14ManuelaSL there would have been a second film I believe, had the last 2 novels not been of an atheistic view point with so many people dying

  • @AliceHaleCullen Or if the movie had done better, it sold very poorly

  • @shebnemxx Yes, and didn't the boy die?

  • Yes! When (Yes not if "When") Chris Weitz makes the director's cut, he can put it in the correct order and include the last three chapters!

  • @xxPatheticEmoxx As long as they take out Eva Green's narration, it gets really annoying.

  • happy birthday dakota!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is one of the best movies ever well besides Avatar but still a good movie

  • They fucked the movie up....

  • I really don't understand why so many people hated this movie. It's quite true to the books--yes the bear scene is supposed to come after Bolvangar, but it doesn't really matter that much to the overall story--and these deleted scenes don't do anything for the movie. All it is is narration. Who cares about narration? As for the Lord Asriel scene, I think they might have been planning to put it at the beginning of the next movie instead. Well anyways, it's too bad they aren't making the others.

  • The next movie? How could they possibly make a next movie? They deleted the whole witches prophecy. Completely central to the next books! They ended with a ending that leaves nothing wrong, nothing at all nothing for the next movie to build off.

  • Put this in movie!!!! Stop church!!! Rebellion!!!!! Hahahaha! Down with the authority!!!!!

  • @evilchickenfilms yeah stop authority stop atheism

  • Yea New Line said it was abd in US so they're not gonna do the sequel. But they also don't want to give up the rights. Because I forgot who said that if they give up the rights they'll be able to make it. New Line sucks.

  • @OcMiske NEW line either needs to make the sequel or give up the rights already!

  • @lexlex1994 No, what they need to do is let Chris Weitz make a director's cut, and then make the sequels.

  • I think This film just had a bad director

The actors were God damn Perfect

I think any of us could do a better Job

i was thinking if they had dreamworks make it,

then something decent might come from that

  • they needed to include this in the movie! I dont care what the church says!!!!

  • Yeah New Line is so selfish. And they missed the chance; Dakota changed her hair colour and I think it isn't even curly now. She's sixteen, how are they gonna find a match if they want to film The Subtle Knife? Anyway U.S. isn't the only country in the world! Hello, wakey up NL. !

  • I don't think the biggest problem is the hair, the biggest problem should be age.

  • OMG IF ONLY THEY HAD THIS IN THE MOVIE!

  • I completely agree with you! Well said. They shouldn't have made an adult book into a kids movie, or at least they shouldn't have f****** up the order to make it a 'happy ending'. It ended how it did in Northern Lights for a reason.

  • Adult book? HDM? o.O

  • @Texasgal14 Omg I totally agree, this is my very book series of all time and they turned the film into some little kids movie...THIS BOOK IS DARK AND NOT FOR LITTLE KIDS! So don't make a movie of it if you are going to destroy it QQ. Sorry had to vent and totally agreed with exactly what you said :D

  • yes this film would be very better if they had kept the book's end and if they didn't put the bears battle before the bolvangar scene.

  • i find new line very selfish. if my information is correct, they stopped making the sequels cos it bombed in the U.S? well they need to take a good hard look around the world. Australia, Britain, were countries where it did well. and on top of that, remember Batman Begins? earned the same ammount of money and immediately the dark knight was in production

  • How the movie did wellis a mystery to me, they destroyed it! They took out too much, far far too much. They took out the witches prophecy!

  • WOW.... I LOVE IT

  • new line did the same thing in two towers, they put the Shelob spider part into the return of the king so the movie didnt end on a down note.

  • I wanted to see these scenes. Thank you for sharing.

  • i long for the real ending of the book.if they make the 2nd movie it's going to be in it i think.

  • Yeah...I was kinda pissed off, went to the toilet at that part (at the cineama) and came back to find the film ended and i was like "WTF how long was i in there for?" until I was told it ended when i left.

  • I wonder... are these background musics in the videos original soundtrack from the respective scenes in the movie?

  • this movie is mixed up

  • does any one no when the next movie will come out?

  • it's not, those assholes,

sorry, but i love those book, and they deserved to be done and respected, the film was good, but it would have been awesome with these sequences. and we'd probably have a sequel. damn!!

  • I head they haven't decided yet. THEY SO SHOULD THOUGH! Even though the movie was somewhat poor, I thought it was still okay.

  • They've decided--it bombed in the US, they sold the international rights, the end.

I thought the movie was fine until the end got CUT!

  • They might make a remake some day I would assume. Fantasy is still very popular, but there are know books - or at least to worthy books - to be turned into a movie. As long as we all encourge our friend to buy Philip's latest book and the sales go up, there eye will be drawn back.

  • If they did make another, they should make it like the book, not mixed up

  • doh, was I dronk while making that post? eh...

  • drunk*.. yup.. it seems I still am.. euh..

  • On October 9, 2007, Weitz revealed that the final three chapters from Northern Lights had been moved to the film's potential sequel, The Subtle Knife, in order to provide "the most promising conclusion to the first film and the best possible beginning to the second

  • I think they will make The Subtle Knife, but put the ending of Northern Lights at the beginning of it. They cut out the real ending because they wanted the battle at Bolvangar to be the climax of the film, thinking that the true ending would be an anticlimax. I personally think that they should have left it in, because to people who haven't read the books, it would've been an unexpected, shock ending. A similar thing happened with The Lord of the Rings, some things were put in a different order.

  • yes, after the ending of the first part of lotr everybody wanted to watch the next movie, and after reading the golden compass i started with the subtle knife the next day becaus of the ending..in the movie it's like "ok nice, everything will be okay soon" and not like "wtf, how is it going on =P

  • that's exactly what i thought. ending at the beginning, then maybe the screen fades and goes to will. and maybe a narrator says 'not far from lyra's world, is a world much a like our own, and a boy, is just about to find more than he expected' we know that the spectrums got will's mother didn't they? they found out in amber spyglass. man, subtle knife will be awesome if it's made into a film.

  • Let's face it New Line ended up making a complete mess of the first book "Northern Lights"....so much so that it's practically impossible to make the other two films....makes you wonder whether or not they were put under that much pressure by outside forces that in the end the story was changed that much....for one simple reason...so the follow up films couldn't be made...by New Line at least !!

  • why this scenes are not in the film. they are very important scenes!!!!!!!

  • i was so devastated when i went to the movies to watch the Golden Compass. i went there for my birthday party.

When the movie ended and the screen went blank, i just kept on sitting there really confused and said "wait! There's still more to come!" but then i watched the credits come on, i still kept sitting there, saying "hang on a sec" to all my friends. it was an embarrasment for NewLine Cinema, plus for me.

  • They will make "The Subtle Knife", they have to make it... I mean, they signed the contract with the actors and this will be the start of the movie.

Is more than blasphamy the Catholic Church be against it, they be agaisnt the book ok, but the movie???

  • i really hope they finish the first book and make the other books into a movie but i think it'll be really difficult dont u? I still think it's a great idea though

  • i want to know why the heck they cut off the end of the movie- It would of been so much better if it had the last part than cutting off like they did. stupid editors....

  • Apparently, they cut it for two good-intentioned, but still ridiculous reasons:

    - They wanted to keep the movie shorter

-They thought the first movie should end with "the best possible hope" for the next, and that the next would have the best possible introduction.

    So why'd they change it?

  • r u serious? that's why?? OMG!!! hang on does that mean there's going to be a second film?? maybe more? have they confirmed anything?

  • yeah, there is 3 books, so they should have 3 movies.

  • DrHouse had it. Apparently the director said there was enormous pressure on him for it. Apparently his final script (the third one) was much longer and better than the movie.

  • I read in Time that it didn't make enough money in america to merit making the second and third movie!

  • It didn't make too much money in America, but it made a lot of money in other countries, plus DVD sales.

  • I don't know, it's just what I read. I hope it's not true.

  • I don't think anyone knows for sure right now. I'm pretty sure Pullman made some statement that the sequel was indefinitely on hold. But the producer seemed adament about getting it done. Who knows at this point. It might end up like the Lemony Snicket movie, with the sequel left open but untouched...

  • Why didn't they freaking put these in the movie?! I mean come on it explains the end of the book.

  • The Subtle Knife (2 movie) will start with this scene that is the only loyal to the book. The start is going to be amazing... Don't miss it!

  • how'd you know?

  • i thought they weren't releasing it now as the catholic church is against it

    apparently it's blasphamy?!?

  • It's not just the catholics who are against it. all the religious nuts hate this movie as it exposes religion for the cult war brain washing mechanism that it is. Hopefully, as the world gets more educated we can come to see the dust of reason push aside the bigotry and blasphamy scams or religion forever.

  • What do you mean with religious nuts? Religious people? 'Cause I don't hate it, I only stopped reading because of Will/Lyra xD.

  • @HarryplusHermione I don't hate either.. I meant religious nuts because that is how they taste and they go well with chocolate or sprinkled on icecream.

In that sense religion has some culinary benefits.. Easter eggs is another example.

  • thanks for sharing!

  • Stupid stupid stupid New Line. IDIOTS>

  • i can't wait for the subtle knife!!!!!!!! =O though, i don't want to see roger dying =(

  • Oh I'm really dying to see the 2nd movie !!! I whish I whould know when it will be released. I just know that they are working on it.

  • i read that there not making "The Subtle Knife" anymore thanks to the Catholic Church

    apparently it's blasphamy!?!

  • What ??? No !!! I'll KILL them if they really won't make the 2nd movie !!! I SWAER BY MY LIFE !!!

  • I wish they would have had more time to put at least a few of those in...oh well. T.T;

    It still rocked!

  • they probably did it to give us a reason to buy the game...

  • omg they shoulda put this in the movie! i know they were trying to make it a cliffhanger but this still woulda workd! and also it looks so funny for the latest james bond to be acting this way lol. they need to make a completely uncut edition

  • i've never read the books and i loved the movie...

  • u should read the books. the movie was good but its nuthing compared to te book. try the audio books for a better idea of it. also i wish they got sam elliot (lee scorsbie) to be the vice actor for lee in the audio book

  • i luvvvv the books :))

  • They had it right! Why didn't they change it??

  • If you watch the commentary on the DVD, they explain a lot of reasons for their changes--and I'm pretty confident that they intend to do things a little differently for the remaining movies.

  • Maybe, but the only reason they did that, was because they wanted Daniel craig in the subtle Knife, as he doesn't appear in the second book

  • Yeah I think that makes sense, especially since even the 5 or 10 minutes he would HAVE in the movie could guarantee a mall increase in viewers. Originally, the production of the next two movies depended on the numbers they got from Compass--which is why they "dumbed down" a few things to reach a more general audience. They made sufficient money (worldwide,) so here's hoping for some great films!

  • Yep, but they actually turned an "awesome" book into a "to be continued" movie

That was indeed silly, most people won't actually see movie 2 for the fact that the first movie's ending was dreadful.

  • I agree and disagree--I don't think non-fans of the book will flock to see the second movie, but I don't believe it is because of the ending. If they had ended the film at the same point the book ended, wouldn't it still be a "to be continued" movie? I will submit that the ending was a bit awkward, but fans of the book know what is coming next anyway. I have to believe they would see the second film regardless of where the first ended. I know I will.

  • I can't really explain how it goes, since I'd be spoiling the ending for you, but the final chapters of the book, where Asrael reveals his intentions, is a huge defining moment. It shows the reader where the tale is going, and is basically the climax.

They originally filmed this, but later decided to scrap them and end the movie right after Svalbard (The facility with all the kids) instead.

They basically took out the one part of the film that made it more grown up than Harry Potter.

  • Oh I have read the books (several times) and I agree with you. I just think that it was a sacrifice needed to ensure that the film could reach a more broad (and younger) audience, thus securing money for the completion of the trilogy. It sucks, but you need money to make movies. I really do think that they have every intention of completing the films with much more integrity. They CAN now, because they have the money, and don't have to worry about an audience that may not understand.

  • Omg! This really pisses me off! they had it right with the bolvangar part before the svalbard part! Then they fucked it up the the editing. they should just make a director's cut and put it all in order like it really should be.

  • why did they cut those scenes? without them, there's no story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WHY DID THEY CUT THOSE OUT?!!! it would have made more sence with them in! (elaborated of corse)

  • what i don't understand this video... someone explain please? why was her dad so mad at her at first? then he was all nice? i don't get it

  • he was mad because his plan was to kill a child so an energy would be released to open the portal to another world. he was mad because the only child he thought he could use was his own daughter, but after he saw roger who he didn't care about, he realized he could use him instead.

  • oh so he killed her best friend?

  • yeah :/ in The Amber Spyglass (3rd book) he talks to her in a dream and she feels it's her fault he died, so her and Will (introduced in 2nd book) use the subtle knife he has that can cut between worlds, to go into the ghost world so she can apologize to him.

  • wow did the people who made the movie even care so much to even read the book!? they should have made the movie like the book (the ending i mean) not cut it up in pieces! theyre gonna hav a hard time piecing 2gether a sequel (if they make one)

  • that's what I thought when I saw Eragon :P

  • thats the one thing i hate about books that turn into movies they dont always relate to the book as much as they should.

  • thankyou i was thinking the same thing

  • Absolutely. I just don't see how they're going to continue it since the ending they cut out is so integral to the sequel, and indeed the finale in the third book. Did they cut it out coz they deemed it too unhappy an ending for innocent little kids? I really do wish they made the movie for an adult audience, and not spoil it with a pg rating and happy meal toys.

  • I know. i feel exactly the same way. they totally left out all the important parts.

  • Well, I am a GIANT fan of these books. And I understand why they took a couple of things and moved them around--the pacing of the movie sort of depended upon it. And I seriously didn't mind it--given that I was so excited teh movie was made at all. They plan to include the ending of the first book as the beginning of the second movie, from what I have discovered. I think that it will all be fine--those in charge of production have vowed to remain true to the story--controversial matters and all.

  • omg these are so confusing! i think it was kinda stupid to put some of these clips in the movie trailers tho! a lot of the stuff in the trailer wasnt even in the actual movie.

  • Fools. New Line fools.

  • Ok, I like the original storyline more, Lyra kidnapped and brought to bolvangar.

  • But that WASN'T the original storyline! The above clips are from when the screenplay followed the book closely.

I don't mind them rearranging things gor the film but ti was done very clumsily: why on earth would Tartar hunters take Lyra to the bears (also geographically impossible: Svalbard is an island).

  • I was so confused watching the movie the second time, seeing the island with the bears on the map and somehow it became on the way to norway O_o

  • some of them are mixed with another scene from the movie, like when Lyra goes to bolvanger, she

goes there with iorek, and when she falls down the ship, thats not in the movie, and the part where she goes to the bears, thats the time she was stolen by those cave people!!

  • i guess in some of the first showings of the movie they had planed on keeping the alternate ending but it confused people.....which is weird

  • I would have loved to see these in the movie!!

  • It startled me when Lord Asriel saw Lyra and dismayed! !@#@$&^$

  • It startled me when Lord Asriel saw Lyra and dismayed! !@#@$&^$

  • It's weird that the scenes are not arranged!

  • Why did they cut it this way? They changed the whole story in the movie!!! Why aren't these scences in the film?

  • I hope an extended cut would restore Bolvanger and Svalbard to their proper order, unlike the theatrical cut.

  • wow I didnt know thorold was with lord asriel too in th film!?

I luv Asriels acting :) how unbalancing it is...i mean...Lyra is kinda crap (lack of emotions) since she ent no professional i suppose

talkin of the subtle knife...i always ve expected spectres would look something like the dementers (or dementos)in harry potter

has anyone read lyra's oxford, is it any good? i might get it (jus finished amber spyglass)

  • it's alright, but it's really short and it's wrapped up all nicely which is quite unpullman like. it's a nice read though

  • OMG!!!I see The Subtle Knife!!!!!!!!!

how much more satisfying would it be for audience would it be if they ve included all this into the film!!!

how dare newline does this to my favorite book!! Grrrrr!!

  • There was no reason to cut all that out, especially since it will be difficult to place Will in the next one now.

  • they completely messed up the movie...BUT i cant wait the 2nd one!there is gonna be a 2nd movie,right?

  • Yes I think so, If they will have a success in Japan after the official premiere there. Hope they will do next movie, becuase the ending is screwed up!

  • yeah..i first saw the movie and then i decided to read the trilogy and when i ended the 1st book i was like ''wtf?did i buy the correct book?''so i hope they will do the next movie...hopefully...

  • they are im auditioning

  • yeah baby!!!!!

  • Where is Lord Asriel's stubble?

  • i can't believe they cut that out and screw up the story line.

  • Wickedfabala, I guess he just saw the alethiometer, and knew she knew

  • it says on wikipedia, they put roger's death in the second movie. i guess cos they didn't have enough time to put it into the 1st one

  • they were almost there! i would have stayedand watched itf or an extra 10 min or so. i would have been satisfied at the end then but no!

  • yeah i was like "what!?" when the credits came up. i was expecting a little bit more really. i suppose they wanted a happier ending than the person she spent the whole movie saving died.

  • Aaaa! our home

  • I still find hard to believe that New Line messed up the movie in the few last months of production. It was no less than sabotage what they did to Weitz's cut.

Oh, what it could have be.

    Director's cut!!

  • how does lord asriel know that she knows thet hes her dad?

  • er.... because hes smart...? he's the kind of person who could build a kingdom, let alone find ot a simple truth from a child.

  • why the fuck they cut out these scenes?

i hope they will be on the dvd but that would need a 20 minutes extra alternative ending

  • there are 3 books, so I think they make 3 movie. I hav read them and the book no.1 is some longer than this movie.

  • but now if you didnt see that movie and if they make the next one you have to watch the first to know wats going on

  • OMG! Why didn't they do that in the movie! They shot everything right, they arranged it right here, why not int he movie!!!!! ARG!

  • Then, Airperris, we owe you... A DEBT! May your children fill every corner of the Earth.

  • Yeah Why Did You do that? Thank You very much Airsperris. The movie will be more like a book if this scenes will be added
