  • I'm 22 and play in a band that does a couple Grateful Dead covers.. one day this older grey haired guitarist came and played with us and only knew one Grateful Dead song. sure enough it was this one...we all laughed cause he didnt know ripple or truckin or what not..but im not laughing any more. this song is cosmic..every other song i know by any band some way sounds like some other song..but i cant compare this to anything. it stands alone.. and takes me somewhere completely different

  • willowed sky oh i often wonder why

  • @oldsoul247 how metaphorically ironic in a the purest biblical sense. I would be the willow in constant sorrow....death don't have mercy on the living.

  • @lilbuddhanic We're still around.....

  • cool video

  • Probably their best studio version of a song simply because they didn't ruin the studio version by playing it so well and often live. (If that makes any sense...)

  • thanks Jake

  • @GrembyTheWalrus they sample ... "woah I walk" and "sky" = )

  • listen for the secret, searchin fer the sound, but i colud only the preacher, and the bayin of his hounds.........killer tune!!!!

  • One little line set the foundation for one epic 6-min song.

  • @Theblizzardking I gotta look up some of Animal Collective's other samples now!!

  • It's funny, I was a Grateful Dead fan before I had even heard of Animal Collective, yet it wasn't until I heard their song "What Would I Want? Sky" that I was directed to this fantastic song! Seriously, it's gotta be one of my favorite Dead tunes now.

  • Fantastic song! This one can take you directly to a star-castle with boots!

  • this song reminds me of smoking good weed and a beautiful girl with snowflakes falling all around her.....which was a part of my life at one point.....always reminds me

  • @Bodeman2010 (: me too :)

  • @Bodeman2010 Same man,then you lose it ;/

  • @Bodeman2010 Yesterday is a memory, the present is a dream...the moment is a gift that's why they call it the present :-) Peace to you and happy new year !!!

  • @Bodeman2010 That sounds like a good time, lol.

  • @Bodeman2010 Yeah bro i remember those days as well DAMN

  • Dammit. Tears again. Thanks for the vid.

  • Many thanks! Terrific video.

  • @Bernler75

I had the same thing happen to me. One day I just started listening, and wondered how the hell I missed out, and wanted more. I didn't hear Unbroken Chain until maybe a year later, because there are literally hundreds of CDs available, but it quickly became a favorite of mine. Check out Shakedown Street, Workingmans Dead (overall my favorite GD album), Greyfolded, and Dozing at the Knick (Not Fade Away and Going' Down the Road Feeling Bad are incredible).

  • It was not long ago I started to listed to Grateful Dead, though this one of my favourite songs by them.

Any more songs similar to this? :P

  • @Bernler75 Box of Rain is with Phil Lesh handling the vocals as well.

  • Awesome many thanks! Just discovered this! Enjoyed the vid. without the trail of cars I remember from that area in the early 80's lol Have no fav. dead albums though . I love them all . Rick Wichita Ks.

  • such a beautiful and touching song

  • we live a short life..suck it up and enjoy it

  • @buddlucan1 Obviously you haven't been through the process so unless you have, I'd really suggest the sarcasm is ceased because there are millions of us who have and some are gonna do nice, some are gonna seek revenge and some will be clever enough to help you empathize in their own unique way as we have all the questions to the answerws to the universe.

  • Happy birthday Phil!

  • wheres the freaking love here, Gezz.........

  • Are you aware that there are people that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother is one. She has bad knees and a bad back but you probably do not care. I'm not, I'm 6'4" 245lbs and I workout. I would love to see you say that to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are just an internet tough guy. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know.

  • @OSUALLTHEWAY71

A free plane ticket to the Virgin Islands and all I gotta do is get an ass-kicking? That's a helluva offer! Where do I sign up? JK. Sorry to hear about your mom's health.

  • dont be a dumbass, there are some people here including yourself who fail to comprehend the concepts they attempt to criticize others with. Your fucking stupid and your opinion doesnt matter.

  • @GrembyTheWalrus My favorite AC song fo-sho.... Wait... I'm not sure... There are too many...

  • Comment removed

  • think about that statement... if the "best" song uses this than that means this is the best

  • Videos so so cool!!! as are the tunes!!!- Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Stop freaking comparing two of the greatest bands. both songs are increible, both bands are incredible.

  • @jkers66 yea but no Person Pitch sucks, its unbearable really, and animal collective's only decent album was danse manatee. but you know thats just my opinion, i guess your free to think your right about what good music is but at the same time you think that AC is better than grateful dead? no problem tho.

  • @thezim obvious troll is obvious.

  • this is awesome, Phil Lesh co-wrote this and Pride of Cucamonga...wow..great talent..under-rated

  • I've never listened to the Grateful Dead, I always wanted to, especially after loving Animal Collective (I mean, anything that influences such an amazing band has to be good) but because my stepdad was such a "hardcore"/"old school" punk, I was raised to believe anything even slightly related to hippies sucks. But, Animal Collective is my faaavorite band, and 1:18 BLEW MY FUCKING MIND. They are so perfect.

  • @moldofthefawn I just got into them as well about 2 months ago already in my top five and there to stay. However Nazareth is my favorite of all time and will keep that position until the day I die. If you have not yet looked into Nazareth you should have a look at some of their albums, Particulary the Debut album self titled (Nazareth) and Exercises as they have some slower songs on them as grateful dead are a slower band mostly. Their other albums are great as well.

  • @moldofthefawn You should also look into the albums: Rampant, Hair of the Dog, No Mean City, Play N the Game, Close enough for rock N roll. This is just for starters LOL. I can't forget to mention The dead in this post; they are an amazing band and I am currently looking into acquiring every studio album they have ever released. But check Naz out.

  • @moldofthefawn I will also check out animal collective if you speak of them like that and love This song then Animal Collective has got to be something worth checking out.

  • It's pretty shit that the first time I actually listen to The Grateful Dead is because of Animal Collective.

  • @rockyhard1 When you actually get on the DEAD bus you will then understand what all the fuss is about.

  • i think it's beautiful

  • the video is remincesnt of a time that once was

  • video kind of sucks

  • The Dead. (don't know what's with the video)

  • sweeeeeet tune.

  • I can't listen to this without shedding a tear.

  • whos singing?

  • @mrgoodstuff95 phil

  • My favorite song off the album, though, there are many great ones from this album.

  • I was soooooooooooooo there for the 1st one they busted out in Philadelphia. Magical. They started out the first notes and the whole place went silent just to make sure it was hearing it for real and they the Spectrum went Banana's.....

RIP Spectrum... They demolished it today.

  • @BigWoollyMammoth Just moved from Philly 'burbs to North Carolina. Caught the demolition of the Spectrum on the news just by chance. WOW! Sad, sad day. Saw many good Dead shows there. Not sure if I was there for the 1st ever of Unbroken Chain, but a great tune anyway. Peace! Keep the memories alive.

  • Driving from VT to NYC this song came on the air. An old favorite. Saw the master wander with this and grateful to have been there. Thanks for this vid.

  • Do you have the acoustic version of this song?

  • Perfect song for Alaskan winter driving. :)

  • holy shit AC, thanks

  • @larrylen Right!? Ah, perfection. :)
