Even before the first nuclear weapons had been developed, scientists involved with the Manhattan Project were divided over the use of the weapon. The role of the two atomic bombings of the country in Japan's surrender and the U.S.'s ethical justification for them has been the subject of scholarly and popular debate for decades. The question of whether nations should have nuclear weapons, or test them, has been continually and nearly universally controversial.
Radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons testing was first drawn to public attention in 1954 when the Castle Bravo hydrogen bomb test at the Pacific Proving Grounds contaminated the crew and catch of the Japanese fishing boat Lucky Dragon. One of the fishermen died in Japan seven months later, and the fear of contaminated tuna led to a temporary boycotting of the popular staple in Japan.
The incident caused widespread concern around the world, especially regarding the effects of nuclear fallout and atmospheric nuclear testing, and "provided a decisive impetus for the emergence of the anti-nuclear weapons movement in many countries".
Peace movements emerged in Japan and in 1954 they converged to form a unified "Japanese Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs". Japanese opposition to nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific Ocean was widespread, and "an estimated 35 million signatures were collected on petitions calling for bans on nuclear weapons".
In the United Kingdom, the first Aldermaston March organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament took place at Easter 1958, when several thousand people marched for four days from Trafalgar Square, London, to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment close to Aldermaston in Berkshire, England, to demonstrate their opposition to nuclear weapons. The Aldermaston marches continued into the late 1960s when tens of thousands of people took part in the four-day marches.
In 1959, a letter in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was the start of a successful campaign to stop the Atomic Energy Commission dumping radioactive waste in the sea 19 kilometres from Boston. In 1962, Linus Pauling won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to stop the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, and the "Ban the Bomb" movement spread.
In 1963, many countries ratified the Partial Test Ban Treaty prohibiting atmospheric nuclear testing. Radioactive fallout became less of an issue and the anti-nuclear weapons movement went into decline for some years. A resurgence of interest occurred amid European and American fears of nuclear war in the 1980s.
Between 1940 and 1996, the U.S. spent at least $8.15 trillion in present day terms on nuclear weapons development. Over half was spent on building delivery mechanisms for the weapon. $511 billion in present day terms was spent on nuclear waste management and environmental remediation.
@057gnb3316sef6 the nuclear nightmare is the destroyer of many civilisations. who knows how many spicies has destroyed it self when they discoverd the power of nuclear weapons.
@mctantrum Dear Achmed, I'm so sorry that you think you are completely informed and that you think muslims are friends of ours and don't want Americans dead. You can stand next to Mr Obama after Iran or N Korea hits us with one and apologize to them and then, not retaliate. Dildo
Anyone else notice that even though trees and busses and buildings are being blown over, and peope are being blown to ashes, yet the springy horses at 1:46 don't move? Well maybe the shock wave isn't as intense there one might say. Still, the fence and her skelaton got hit pretty hard at the end and she was at about the same spot as the horses with respect to the blast.
In the mid-1990s, the U.S. military puts an advanced computer system (Skynet) in charge of the nuclear stockpile. In 1997, it becomes self-aware, decides that mankind is inefficient and needs to be eliminated, then launches the nukes at Russia and company, triggering WW3.
@WhiskasIII It depends on how close you are to the blast, and how strong the blast is. People right near ground zero would have been completely vaporized.
@SuperPombear They must've been in an alternate timeline where that movie never existed. That's the consistency problem with movies that take place in the future. However, they could have gone behind a coke machine, unless Double Team didn't exist in their timeline as well.
That scene in Aliens were Ellen Ripley wakes up from a nightmare is sorta the same as to how i felt about Alien 3 and Alien Resurection(Erection:)) man they sucked balls too
And don't even get me started on the AVP crap
It's like James Cameron new about a crappy future so he did these amazing scenes as a metafor to warn us about crappy sequels by other directors
1:35 Good to know there will be some law-abiding citizens in the midst of a nuclear explosion who continue to drive in an orderly fashion while being burned alive.
@IvixHira If you want to address this on a cinematography level, everyone in the vicinity of the initial blast is shown burning to death well before the shot of the shock wave sending cars off the road. . Those driving would also be cooked alive well before the actual shock wave, and yet the cars are progressing in an orderly fashion. From a physics standpoint, the electromagnetic radiation that carries the heat of the flash would indeed affect the environment well before the shock wave.
In my mind this scene pretty much sums up why this movie is better than the first it shows how Sarah is tormented by the fact that she knows what the future holds and that no one will listen to her which makes her wanting to change the future by killing Dyson all the more engaging as well as making the ending all the more sastisfying until T3 came out and it all went to Hell
You can secure your families future by reserving a spot in a state of the art underground vault from Vault Tec! That's right, act now and your family can wait out the horrors of nuclear devastation!
@imthenoid69 Four nukes could take out four cities. NYC, LA, Chicago, Dallas. Think about how heavily populated those cities are. You do the math on the potential casualties there, bud. Is it worth it?
@FMHSdude09 Sure you are correct but I seriously doubt any of them would get anywhere near our soil before being shot down. And Im with you on the Perry comment!
@imthenoid69 Let's hope. I generally just hate nuclear weapons. It's a cowardly way to fight. And yeah, the Perry comment was facetious. This video should use "Perry 2012" as a tag line.
@VulcanXL You will wipe out yourself and anything within a 20 mile radius, you know...?
TheYuuzhan 9 hours ago
It is a good thing nuclear testing, if there will ever be any in the future, is only allowed underground.
On or above the ground: heat waves, blinding light, shock wave, earthquake, radiation, and lots of smoke...
Underwater: a massive column of water that can easily swamp an aircraft carrier and, depending on the yield, a tsunami...
Outer space: a BIG electromagnetic pulse...
Underground: Just a huge uproar of radioactive dirt that you can easily get away from...

1:35 Good to know there will be some law-abiding citizens in the midst of a nuclear explosion who continue to drive in an orderly fashion while being burned alive.

@MST3KLives They'd never know it was coming.

That's right, act now and your family can wait out the horrors of nuclear devastation!

drop a couple of those bad boys on the middle east. terrorism problem solved

@imthenoid69 Countries in the middle east have nuclear weapons also. Let's think for a second about their reaction... Hmm.

@FMHSdude09 Im sure Pakistan would counter with all four of their nukes. It would be a draw. Hmmm
imthenoid69 4 months ago
@imthenoid69 Four nukes could take out four cities. NYC, LA, Chicago, Dallas. Think about how heavily populated those cities are. You do the math on the potential casualties there, bud. Is it worth it?
FMHSdude09 4 months ago in playlist The Terminator
@FMHSdude09 Sure you are correct but I seriously doubt any of them would get anywhere near our soil before being shot down. And Im with you on the Perry comment!
imthenoid69 4 months ago
@imthenoid69 Let's hope. I generally just hate nuclear weapons. It's a cowardly way to fight. And yeah, the Perry comment was facetious. This video should use "Perry 2012" as a tag line.
