  • "This new Gateway Center will be a place FOR people. A destination. A 24-hour environment where they can linger over an evening meal or sip a cup of morning coffee. A place in the center of the city where people will WANT to be."

Fascinating how it worked out. Today, the amenities of Union Station continue to be concentrated on the west-end of the property-- in the station building-proper. I find that there is very little to make me WANT to linger in the East Portal portion of the facility.

  • cool vid thanks or posting

  • Wow...interesting to look at this from the perspective of 2008. Some of this did get built...the Metro office building, that rotunda that links the Amtrak concourse with the Red Line station and so on. However, the finished product is not as ambitious as what was advertised in the film. I kind of like what was built better...it doesn't overpower Union Station which remains one of the most beautiful extant rail stations in the US. You don't upstage a diva. :)

  • Not sure what was built yet?

  • Visiting Union Station these days, it is fascintaing to see what got built and what was not built with this project.

I'm happy that those horrible parking garages were not put in front of Union Station.

As pedestrian freindly as this project is described, pedestrian access to downtown from Union Station still sucks. Crossing 4 to 5 lanes of fast car traffic and several freeway entrances to go to/from Union Station = discouraged walkers.
