  • very cool, any plans on making a sawmill in the future?

  • No. Already built one. Watch the video.

  • this is great!

  • Awesome Job !

  • very dangerous with no guards ,also both sides of the axels should be supported .you don't see a bicycle only supported on on side of the axel

  • Great project, nice video.

  • im using bike wheels for my bandsaw blade holder :) and advice you could give me :)

  • Yes. Don't.

  • @MrBurnTec

"Don't" seems fair comment, but with a surface that is suitable to hold the blade, I can see a benefit. It is possible to true up a bike wheel - i.e. no need to drill holes to balance it. Bike wheels have a convenient bearing too. Get the blade to ride it right and it might work. I'm a believer in never saying never.

  • @SiskinOnUTube the thing is i dont get why not the perfectly straight with a 9mm axle and 20" rims

  • Great vid

  • вот мужик так дает!

  • You built a bandsaw..... Astounding work my friend!

  • where is your safety? you can kill yourself without any cover on the wheel

  • @davidhfk .... proving yourself that you did not watch the entire video, and so did not think your comment trough.... he made a very nice enclosure at the end

  • @davidhfk i ran a high speed band saw for 20 years 8 hours a day cutting computer floor tiles so I believe i am qualified is replying to your post. the most dangerous part of this video would be for him to slip and fall in to the blade which would tear him arm or rip through any body part that comes in contact with the blade while it is running. he should use a vacuum or dust mask and ear plugs. if the blade pops off it might nick you but it stops moving quickly.

  • super nice work

  • This is so cool... I need make one...

  • What a great job keep up the good work

  • ECCELLENTE!

  • that's impressive- if things ever really come off the tracks, you'll be able to live large since you can apparently build anything!

  • I wish you were near by ! I could learn a lot!

  • do u use the things you create?

  • it wud be cool to see a small sawmill made like this good job

  • if you were going to do this the simplest way what kinda of tires wood you use, I don't under stand what keeps the band from falling off? I just started welding,, your rad I hope you reply

  • For an answer to that question, see my video on flatbelt tracking.

  • How much did it cost? How hard was it to build? I would love a bandsaw, but i don't have the money, and most need a special high current outlet, which i don't have.

Making myself a not-too-low powered bandsaw for a reasonable price that plugs right into normal outlet sounds very compelling.

  • The motor for a large bandsaw costs more than a small table top bandsaw.

  • @Xar0mir

My Sears bandsaw runs on standard 110V so no special outlet necessary. As a matter of fact I paid $75 for my band saw at a yard sale. This particular model is electronic which isn't really even necessary but when you put a battery in it, it tells you what angle you have the head tilted to for cutting angles. If you can't afford to buy a new band saw and don't have the knowledge to build your own I seriously would look at yard sales people are always selling old tools.

  • you might want to cover up the wheels, just sayin

  • @rmr1197 oh i didnt see the end of the vid nm

  • Your Workshop is larger than my entire apartment :(

  • don't let you kids play around there. they could easily lose up to 4 fingers.

  • Hy Guy, Nice work

    Thumbs up

Wooden wheel, it was my first plan also.

Aren't you worried that the wood will twist?(Because the dry wood takes up moisture from the air. I often turning, sometimes the dry wood changes shape.I built too a bandsaw what all of components form junkyard &I own made The aluminium wheel was an old broken washingmachine pulley ( 15 ') I used an old water pump's motor (1,5hp), table is wood. the balde what i bought(25$) All cost40$ Cheap&easy Nice to see I'm not alone

  • Your videos are amazing. Thanks.

  • So the saw is only held in place by sheer tension? Hmmm....

  • Love it. I used to pore over the old articles about wooden stationary power tools in FWW. The Bandsaw article came from another Canadian, must be a national character trait. I love the ratchet mechanism, sorry to see practicality led to it's demise, if understandable.

One thing about wood that it isn't cold, whether I am working with a hand plane, or in the machines. My machines are all cast iron, and they get so cold in the winter, that the shop doesn't recover all summer.

  • where do you get all of your motors, 1/3 hp, 1 1/2 hp... jeeze

  • Fantastic!

I built my own bandsaw too, but I used steel, and I got a set of wheels off a broken saw, your saw is much more comprehensive!

  • if u want to download my video from the band saw to build the author nor do I care where it will remain no matter who I take my video and put it on your own good I think that there is no harm done t in peace!! !!

  • if u want to download my video from the band saw to build the author nor do I care where it will remain no matter who I take my video and put it on your own good I think that there is no harm done t in peace!! !!

  • Oh my god, I'm cringing right now... running a band saw - a HOMEMADE bandsaw - without ANY guards on? :S

  • Very nice....

  • Woah neat!

  • you are great , man.

  • about how much would you say the project costed?

  • Matias,

I have an old band saw, the motor is weak....but I was thinking If I buy a circular saw and replace my old band saw with the circular saw motor..how it is going to do it

Becuase the original motor is 1/5 hp 1750 rpm

and a regular circular saw is around 1hp and 5000 rpms....

Regarding of torq: the circular saw motor are going to have to deal same torq

    any sugestion???

  • Love your woodworking website, and this is an awesome example of your work. Roughly speaking, how many hours of labor did you put into this contraption?

  • Oh cool, you are really good to build :)

  • Love your videos. Very creative ideas and solutions. Keep 'em coming!

  • I really enjoyed this. Very creative work and the ratcheting tension adjustment mechanism is brilliant.

  • Simply amazing what a person can accomplish with a little ingenuity. Keep up the good work!

  • Awesome video on making a homemade band saw! Question; while you were turning the wheels why did you leave the center blocks square? Was there an unseen problem getting to those block to turn them round too?

Thank you for the great video

  • O_O

  • What can I say .... truly impressive!!!

  • very nice work, how do you figure the bandsaw to be stable?

  • Very nice work, man. I thought about making one with two 20" bicycle wheels. chain drive of course...

  • That is very cool. Exhibits a great deal of time, patience, and perseverance as well some very clever problem solving.

  • @Matthiaswandel Thank you.

You are doing some really amazing stuff!!

  • Nice job Matthias!! Very impressive.

  • Good job. Bandsaws get expensive in a hurry as the wheel size increases. A tilting table would have been nice but hey! I like they way you segmented the wheel rims. Surprised you didn't finger joint the segments together.

  • I thoght about segmenting the wheels, but that would have meant cutting them to length before fitting them to the wheel.

And I figured they'd do fine segments and I already put a crazy amount of time into it as it was.

  • @Matthiaswandel dont be modest

you thought it would just be bragging with you skills

these r great vids tho honestly

  • Very dangerous running it with out gards. the blade could come off and cut you up

  • This is amazing, truly a work of art.

  • wood rocks

  • man I love your videos. do you think you could make a a maple snare drum and drum and drum sticks? I think that would be a cool project

  • wow

  • Holy shit that was good. Talk about a great methodical path.

  • My god, this is amazing. I am blown away. Awesome video. :)

  • Nice work. I built a band saw very similar to yours a number of years ago. I had a problem with the wooden support column warping over time because of the constant pressure from the blade tension. You might consider reinforcing he column with steel or a triangular truss up the back... Chuck

  • Can a washing machine or dryer motor be used for this? Any idea on the specs for these types of motor?

  • Washing machine motors should be ok. Dryer motors are probably too weak.

  • @Matthiaswandel Depending on the ratios of the pullies, either or should be fine. I'd go with 1/2HP since they're pretty easy to find and run at the proper voltage for home use. You need to be careful around some appliance motors because they aren't always fully enclosed to protect against electric shock or injury from moving parts.

  • Your... amazing.

  • You are amazing! I too was scared as hell for you, but I know that you evaluated any risk prior to testing (like you analyze everything) so I'll just worry about my own safety and say... "Awesome job!"

  • Your ingenuity is incredible! Though I would be extremely nervous to work with this particular piece of machinery, I am more than impressed with the functionality of it.

  • can i has one?

  • so are SO awesome!!! lol like no joke i wish i had a shop and was an expert carpenter!

  • that is insane with it made out of wood that is almost unreal

  • I'm in woodshop class, and I can only dream of half the amazing stuff you do.

    Keep it up!

  • 5***** / faved

  • Fun idea, but I am concerned about your risk management.. I'm sure the clips don't do it justice just how many tests you did before running the blade under power, but it's quite scary to consider running a bandsaw blade at speed with no shielding of any sort.

  • How about I worry about my safety, and let you worry about yours?

  • jerk

  • @Matthiaswandel - Ouch.... mmm, that's not like you.... or is it?

  • @Matthiaswandel He's concerned?! He races sport bikes...

  • awesome dude

  • wow

  • you should build a wooden man that pushes wood through the wooden bandsaw!!

  • @etoposide

Too easy. He should build a wooden man and a wooden woman to make a wooden boy to build a wooden bandsaw to build his future mate. Wood shall rule the world!

  • Fantastic! Good organization of the video too!

  • You did well!

  • Very nice saw and video. Thanks for posting. I've thought about building a saw for years and I've gathered 3 or 4 books that have articles about home building a band saw. I like your tensioning mechanism, it looks effective. Do you think it's better than the more customary screw? Also, You didn't talk about the tracking system. I assume that's covered in the article. Thanks, again. Great job.

  • very, very nice work! your creativity never cease to amaze me!

  • arent you scared that the saw will fly off and shop off your head or something? :S

  • Yes

  • I would be a little worried about the day that the blade brakes and saws its way out of the housing.

  • thankyou for uploading

  • great vid

  • Dayum, you really are amazing at this.

  • Nice work! Did you calculate your blade speed on the final setup?

  • @tuberizer

    Yes, in the accompanying article.

  • that is amazing!!

  • I always enjoy your segments and wish that I could do half as much as you. Keep up the good work!

  • Good job

  • Are you kidding me?? Ok, quit showing off!!! Seriously, that's incredible! Next challenge, how about a homemade power planer or jointer???

  • @dgmunch

Got a spare cutterhead I could use?

  • @Matthiaswandel

Make a cutterhed. Series of tablesaw molding heads stacked on a shaft. Kind of expensive though.

  • It works - sweet! :D

  • That is AWESOME! =D

  • brilliant

  • What size hole did you end up drilling to balance that wheel?

  • @carolinasled

    #

    Matthiaswandel (uploader) 2".

Worked it out by putting a piece of wood on top of the wheel to see how much weight it would take to bring it into balance

  • Matthias you are great and I have learnt so much from you and your inquiring mind. I just think you are a wonder with wood and hope to learn half as much as you know when working with wood.

Thank you for sharing your newest adventure with me. Keep up the great work.

    Shane

  • Man!!1...you are just soo smart....just amaze me all the time:D

  • yes sir :)

  • Have been watching your videos for a long time. I grew up always watching my grandfather in his wood shop and watching your videos amaze me at the fact with a little creativity an know how the possibilities are pretty much endless what one can accomplish. Can't wait to see what kind of jigs you come up with in the future for this.

  • Wow, that's really good.

  • Simply amazing. I honestly wouldnt be too suprised to see an updated version of this bandsaw in the near future with you having found a way to make the blade out of wood! keep up the great work!

  • awesome, i would love to have that much spare time and money to be able to just say one weekend, hey im gonna go build a bandsaw

  • Wish I was this good with wood

  • @iAMsoBEAST1 lol, thats what she said

  • Tomdamonkey999 Yeah i was thinking the same thing :)

  • sweet how long did it take you to build it, start to finsh

  • Genius you are :)
