the ice in antarctica is known to go all the way down to the ocean bottom in places. the earth itself is known to be 'flattened' at the south pole and it is attributed to the weight of the ice. when it melts enough antarctica will rise out of the sea by as much as 5 miles, easy. in doing so it will crack the earths crust - period. it is connected to every tectonic plate in the world, either directly or indirectly. we are looking at another 'toba catastophe' and it may well be unstoppable.

Here's a little Physics Experiment for you. Get a graduated cylinder and fill it halfway with water, then put ice inside. Measure the water's location the second the ice goes in. Cover the top so Evaporation doesn't take effect, then remeasure the water after ALL the ice melts. The amount you get in the end will be about 10% less than the initial rise.

The land will rise greater than the size of antartica. It will actually grow in size when all the gravittional pressure is relived from the removal of all the ice weight pressing down on it.

In the northern hemisphere, there's no Arctic ice cap, there's only variable amounts of floating ice pack (sea ice). Arctic sea ice was down in 2007, it hasn't been that low since then.
In the southern hemisphere, the Antarctic ice cap is not melting at all, and (as any competent scientist could tell you) there's absolutely no chance that human activity could ever cause it to melt.

Ice has a density of 915 per cubic meter, ocean water of 1029 per cubic meter. Voila that s why 11% of an iceberg is floating above (1029-915/1029). Now melt the fresh water (density 1000 pr cubic meter). (1029-1000/1029). You ll get a slight rise of 2,8% in your glass of water^^ If the density of the stuff you melt is different than the stuff it is floating in, you can indeed have a rise....

You really need to research post glacial rebound or isostatic rebound. If the cap continues to melt at the rate it's apparently melting at, then we're in for a lot of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the very near future. The problem is that global warming is not occuring, but the caps are still melting.

Here's a little Physics Experiment for you. Get a graduated cylinder and fill it halfway with water, then put ice inside. Measure the water's location the second the ice goes in. Cover the top so Evaporation doesn't take effect, then remeasure the water after ALL the ice melts. The amount you get in the end will be about 10% less than the initial rise.

The "polar ice caps" aren't melting.
In the northern hemisphere, there's no Arctic ice cap, there's only variable amounts of floating ice pack (sea ice). Arctic sea ice was down in 2007, it hasn't been that low since then.
In the southern hemisphere, the Antarctic ice cap is not melting at all, and (as any competent scientist could tell you) there's absolutely no chance that human activity could ever cause it to melt.

This video is four years old, and done right after 2007's record-low (since at least 1979) summer Arctic sea ice extent. But, guess what? Arctic sea ice hasn't been that low since then.
The low Arctic sea ice in 2007 was caused less by human activity than by capricious weather, which blew the floating ice into warmer water, where more of it melted that usually happens.

The sea ice is a very thin unstable layer, a few meters at most, most area melts every summer.
The ice in the ICE CAP is constituted mainly by the Greenland ice sheet which is over 2 MILES thick, and getting thicker.

Ice is less dense than water, cuz it floats, right? now fill a bowl with large icecubes to make a floating ice shelf, now fill with water to the very brim of the bowl, Ice will float above the rim. Right? now let all the ice melt... the water level will not overflow, it will in fact not rise AT ALL

Ice has a density of 915 per cubic meter, ocean water of 1029 per cubic meter. Voila that s why 11% of an iceberg is floating above (1029-915/1029). Now melt the fresh water (density 1000 pr cubic meter). (1029-1000/1029). You ll get a slight rise of 2,8% in your glass of water^^ If the density of the stuff you melt is different than the stuff it is floating in, you can indeed have a rise....

@landcruiserlarry You are basically right (you described Archimedes' Law), but there will be a slight rise because of thermal expansion as the water heats up, but the nett rise will still be small.

You really need to research post glacial rebound or isostatic rebound. If the cap continues to melt at the rate it's apparently melting at, then we're in for a lot of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the very near future. The problem is that global warming is not occuring, but the caps are still melting.

@b28e you seem to answer your own question, "sinking" due to tectonic or simple geology, however since i have never specifically researched sundarban or most others, i cannot offer a solid theory, think about this also for a bit... if you drove a tunnel-boring machine and drilled a perfectly horizontal bore, starting at the Atlantic and head West, you would exit in the Pacific hundred of feet underwater. so there could be many fascinating oddites on Earth that could account for change

it might be that global warming truly doesn't exist or that it is in face a completely natural phenomenon, but i can also hardly say that we haven't contributed to anything that has been going on in the past few years.

@b28e AGW is not political. The deniers try to pretend it is. The mass of science that supports the theory is enormous and continues to mount. Up until the 80s we were simply amplifying natural cycles since then we are overwhelming them. If the natural cycles were in play it would be cooler than 1980.
Deniers like landcruiserlarry can sound pretty scientific but they don't really understand much. If you want to learn what the science really says the best site is skeptical science (dot) com

The reason for the unexplained melting is this : Nuclear tests in the atmosphere and the radiation is melting the glaciers. It is melting even when the earth is in cooling and the Chemtrails with Barium is an Radiadion shield, because THEY destroyed the Ozon layer...Because of that, we are now in Post Glacial Rebound, just wait for the EarthQuakes and volcanos to multiply in a rapid pace.

@FromDimmuLand That is probably the stupidest alternative "theory" I've ever heard. Have you any science to back it up? A peer reviewed paper or two? I can at least point to some genuine science (tons of it actually). I doubt you have any at all.
PS the ozone layer is not related to global warming. If there's all that radiation it should be killing everything on the planet. And actually when the earth cools (like in winter) the ice builds up again.
But I await your proof.

It is a well known effect and places that still have sizable glaciers on them will rise a bit when the glaciers melt, Greenland and Antarctica in particular. However almost all the land mass of the earth has gone through the rebound already.

That weight causes the ocean floor in certain geofragile zones to sink down..& take certain islands down w/ it...Venice, Italy has kept record & has known those 2-3thousand yo bldgs were going to sink by something called POST GLACIER REBOUND effect would occur worldwide..&has already caused many more earthquakes & magma to erupt. The world's leaders know it.

@landcruiserlarry the earth is not a bowl. it is more like a tire w/ wts on it... and that water redistributes around the globe and it is heavy...post glacial rebound or isostatic rebound, the sea beds will sink w/ the wt. of all that water, and push the land masses up, thus very little sea level rise & land gain will be noticed in some areas.

This animation starts with an icecap covering most of Canada and Russia. All of Scandinavia and the British Isles and stretching as far down south as Seattle. How far back in time do we need to go to find that much ice? Propably 10 000 years. A focus on pollution is important, but this animation is silly.

what people have to understand is that, while climate change is a very natural cause, it is being accelerated by our CO2 emmissions. The polar ice caps aren't the only ice bodies being affected by climate change. look at greenland for example-if the glacier melts, the sea levels could rise by 7 feet.
plus, there is also the threat of having no ice at the north pole. The ice caps act like ice cubes for our planet- like a glass of water, take away the ice cubes and the water warms faster.
