  • I suppose I'm a member of the last generation to know what fishing was like on the Great Lakes, before the lamphrey and zebra mussells with more invasive species arriving every year. Progress is killing us and everything we had that was worthwhile.

  • I love that this song is a waltz, yet the mood and the lyrics so different from what we usually associate with a waltz. He was a brilliant, brilliant musician. Gone too soon.

  • I like this a lot; I only wish I'd heard it sooner.

  • Shortcircuit......Thanks for that info! you should check out John Martyn if you don't know and love him already! Scottish....RIP. also.

  • HIs voice calls me. That must be a portal to the soul. It reaches mine. I miss him,

  • nice!

  • I, too, learned to0 late of Stan Rogers, finding my frst album long after his passing. I've got several of his CD's now, all favorites to take on road trips.

  • There is a version of this song by Rita and Mary Rankin off of the Stan Rogers Tribute album that is just heart wrenching. If any of you are able to get your hands on this Tribute CD I would strongly suggest it!

  • The really sad part of this song is that I was written some time in the early 80's, and it's 2010 now, and nothing has changed.

  • canso ns

  • one warm line. thanks for that. I will try to find it. not to figure out how to get myself over to Canso in July!! I know.. Just Do it, as they say.

  • I hope you all have read, or will read the Farley Mowat book The Boat who Wouldn't Float!! it Must have been a favorite of Stan's. Must have been! Hilarious. A classic flavor of the Maritimes.

  • the stan rogers festival is in the town of Canso Nova Scotia - July or Aug?

  • brings tears to my eyes every time !

  • Is there a better voice than Stan's? I don't think so.

  • Viennashade.. thanks for that tip. I will see about it.

    rg

  • beautiful song....a real canadian treasure...P.S. stanfest is held in canso

  • when?????

  • july first weekend every summer...there is a website for the festival with all the info

  • why envy me? why don't you plan to go too? maybe you're far away?

  • Distance, yes...and I don't travel as well as I used to. Besides, I am never sure what is comming up two weeks from now, or two months from now, let alone 2010. I will keep my eyes and ears open and hope, though, and enjoy knowing others are there to celebrate Stan. C.

  • I'm gonna try to go up to Stanfest 2010! What town is it held in?

  • I do not know, but I envy you. I would check out Halifax. Good luck, C.

  • @roygump The Stan Rogers Folk Festival is held in Canso, Nova Scotia. North-East NS, just south of Cape Breton (as the crow flies)

  • @roygump Stanfest is in Canso I do believe

  • Feels so good to be in the company of Stan Rogers fans. I was turned onto him after his death. I cried when I was told that this man who made such deeply moving and important music had died already. One of the crueler facts in this life.. that Stan Rogers was gone.

Are there any documentaries about him??

  • I really don't know, roy, I hope there will be if there aren't now. If you find any, please let me know. He was amazing. C.

  • @roygump @ceb2633 I just discovered this, its about Stan Rogers its called 'One Warm Line' on youtube. Search for Stan Rogers - One Warm Line and theres six parts on Stan. Cheers.

  • Did you hear about "One Warm Line: The Legacy of Stan Rogers" from 1989?

One of the videos on here of him doing Mary Ellen Carter gives a link under 'more info' where you can buy a video of this documentary.

  • @roygump There was a documentary made called One Warm Line. It is pretty good and I'm pretty sure you can see all of it on youtube.

  • @roygump Your post was a while ago so im geussing you found it by now but i think the only documentary stan ever did was "One Warm Line" filmed back in the early 80's. Great look at Stan and his music

  • poor buggers.

  • In the Norfolk Hotel over far too much beer,

The old guys remember when the water ran clear.

No poisons with names that we can't understand

And no tiny fish for Japan.

So the days run together. Each one is the same.

And it's good that the smelt have no lovelier name.

It's all just a job now, we'll work while we can,

To catch tiny fish for Japan.

  • One of my favorite Stan Rogers songs. Lovely to listen to, beautifully arranged and performed.

  • Thanks for the comment, Cbayfishing. The trouble with Stan Rogers; I hear one and think that is my favorite; I hear another and think that is my favorite; on and on. He is astonishing to me.

  • Jeez, just love this song.Stan wrote the songs like the way they use to build the old skiffs.Built to last.

  • What a great analogy, newfie; thanks for listening. C.

  • Just beware of the blowfish variety, Stan. They'd have to be done to a "T" or its adios, muchachos. Veddy nice. Cordially John
