This scene is genius ... one of my favorites from the movie. Entertaining, amusing and sexy dance number combined and contrasted with that horrifying moment where that poor girl sees her slaughtered dog on her doorstep.

I still see 'Cabaret' as a film with two messages. The first is how 'respectable' middle-class Germans turned to the Nazis who promised an end to the socially and sexually chaotic world exemplified by the cabaret and the second is how the members of the cabaret stuck their heads in the sand as the Nazis rose to power and by the end of the movie it's clear that they will lose.

@hynsonandnash What might as well be just as worse is that the Cabaret turned to satrical, cynical entertainment, and mockery of the Nazi for escapism only to adopt that discriminating cynicism ("She wouldn't look Jewish at all!") that would perhaps contribute too the horror in every way.
