Contest music can be 'heavy' although there are more melodicly structured contest pieces for brass band. 'Salute to youth' and 'Dances and Alleluias' are both very nice pieces indeed. but i totaly agree about this piece.
i wouldnt say 'simple'. I love a great Brass March myself.. I know its just down to opinions really. I've played in quite a few brass bands, and its great fun. i guess i'm used to the contest pieces after playing soo many of them. Cheers.
i have to say listening to the whole piece was a total waste of time!! I was waiting for the piece to do something and then it just finished. As if the composer could not be bothered finishing it. i dont mind so called 21st century, aslong as it has a tune and some nice sounds within the piece. but i have to say this piece, is a piece of crap!
I would say that the piece is interesting to say the least with all the percussive effects to imitate birds but it does nothing for me like you purely because of the lack of tune and any actual structure - I'll stick to Wilby, Sparke and Heaton I think.
I have to say that its great to hear bands play pieces like that. We as banders can get so caught up in tradition but pieces like Music of the Spheres and Extreme Makeover are the way forward. I love the old stuff as well Gilert Vinters Entertainments to name one and some of the early Philip Sparke stuff like Lang of the LOng White Cloud and of courses eric ball but i have a great appreciation for what composers are doing now
How can you possibly comment on this piece when it's only 30 seconds of it! You morons!
Banding is the greatest thing for brass players. Tou don't get to be challenged like you do anywhere else. Long live the movement.
Melody? Moron. Open your ears. 3 of the last number of massive competitions included pieces such as St Magnus, Music of the Spheres, Extreme MakeOver, Journey to the centre of the earth, Paganini Variations, and Isiah 40. Listen those of you who have ears.
I feel its not a question of being good enough because this piece is a jumble and you really cant tell if they are playing a wrong note , so i would not worry , I would rather play quality pieces from the pen of Eric Ball , Gordon Langford for instance than some of this modern drivell with poss exception of Derek Bourgious.
Really just a jumble of notes, I played in brass bands for many years , what composers have got to get back to is MELODY if there is going to be any future following
Who composed this piece?

Yes, perhaps my taste is simple but I really like a brass band playing a good march, hope my original comment wasn't to tactless, cheers.

glad you've clarified that . fair comment .

yes very very gud! but giv me lorezo or the force of destiny or jeorney into freedom or paganini or les preludes anyday!sumthin with a crackin tune!

i don't think an ordinary band could play this "jumble". St Magnus is a test piece of the highest level no doubt about it

totally agree with you , sticky stuff syrup and this piece sounds like they are trying to crawl out of it.
The old contest pieces are the best , the likes of Gilbert Vinter for one and of course a few more who knew how to write music with SOUL.
pboast 5 years ago
And this music has no soul? We are in the 21st century and music should evolve. Going back to the 1930's won't help that.

hehe.. Let's not evolve shall we?
I think this is one of the most interesting pieces written for brassband lately. The Philip Sparke scheme has gone on for long enough.

fabulous! As a brass player, this is what brass contesting is all about!
