Okay listen, this isnt perpetual, nor is it, 100% efficient. It obeys all laws. It simply has a non-depleting restoring force. Is like using gravity except instead of gravity going straight is goes in a circular motion. If the magnets are permanent magnets the only way they will loose strength is through high heat, an exceptionally powerful magnetic field, or through striking them. In a set up like this none of those are a factor. All laws are obeyed because of friction of rotation.
@mfcmaddog In a spinning setup the field acting on each magnet would not be, or even need to be, strong enough to demagnetize them. Nor would the be in contact long enough. Again this would require permanent magnets, which in essence are eternal. Time could play a factor but it would take far longer than any of us would live for. So yes, if you had a bunch of huge permanent magnets this would work. A better idea would be to use 2 wheels of magnets, one horizontal one vertical.

The video stopped awful fast. Notice that he never taped the magnet to the table top. This relies on the magnet to be moved back and forth to get the effect working, that varies the magnetic field. Permanent magnets won't do it. Draw your magnetic lines of force for each and every magnet. Use arrows to indicate north and south. You'll see that the magnetic lines bump into each other and will not allow the lid to turn. Not unless you move the magnet up and down at the right time.

This does not work. You have to constantly adjust the placement of the magnet to get the disk to spin. There is no way to replicate this without using your hand to contstantly adjust the magent to keep the disk spinning.

@leswhitehouse666 You have to oscillate the magnet manually to keep it moving. You can't have perpetual motion EVER. You'd have to have an electromagnet pulsing on and off at the right speed to keep the disc turning, but you may as well hook the battery up to the light instead, as it would take less power to do that than to power the pulsing electromagnet.
Magnets will not last forever, the energy it would take to magnetize those magnets is less then what he is creating.
In the end all he made is some engine that works with magnets.. but most likely uses more energy to make then a gas engine does.. way to waste our resources man.

@fricktronick i got into town a day earlier than i expected and got the magnets. no it does not work. i tried with all the same poles facing straight out, then at a 45 degree angle, and it doesn't go. the magnetic field kinda curves around and the next magnet can't break the field. i thought maybe the correct angles would work, but it seems pretty unfunctional.

i did not use a motor like u did to light a bulb i use a cd with a magnet on each end and rested the cd on a old cd player to spin on then i use a magnet held it like u did ( but u do have to move the magnet a little bit) and it was spinning so in my book if some one say this is a hoax then they are a dumb ass
If you need to move your hand to make it work then this is not the same. Yes if you move the magnet sure it will work but you need to provide work to get it to spin. Essentially by moving your magnet, you are varying the field. The replictaions shows the magnet still and the wheel spinning. That is where the Hoax comes in.
Now, before I debug this simple and creative machine, I would like to point out that it is hard to observe all possible variables from a single-perspective video.
If you notice at 1:57,he is moving the handheld magnets.If you can understand this, how he is able to keep this working is due to the motion of his hand affecting the position of the hand-held magnet.
If he tape down the magnet at his "sweet spot," it would move a bit and then rest between two magnetic fields.
Your observations are well founded MS. However, I was wondering is it possible that this system (and perhaps similar one found here on YT) uses the same principles as a pulsar- two bodies is likewise orbits? Why is it difficult to simulate the same principle with magnetic fields? Just curious.

BTW- I tried the procedure that is the subject of this blog, and as you stated, it requires a "jiggle" of the hand to keep the top rotating. Well, a pulsar system, or any other system of large bodies in the universe are bound not by dipole magnetic bodies, but rather the attraction force of all matter on large scales, known as gravity.
The problem with using simply magnetism to propel a body continuously is that it's dipolar nature makes the magnetic bodies want to find equilibrium, rather than continuously be propelled.

The idea is that you present the N pole of the magnet to the disk, the N's on one edge are repulsed while the S's on the other edge are attracted, so the disk spins forever! Hooray!
This doesn't work because rotating a magnet from N to S within the field of another magnet takes work/energy. If you do the math, the flipping consumes more energy than the attraction and repulsion give.
I know a few people who tried to recreate the experiment and it always comes to rest very quickly (close to one opposite pole and far from the same.) He must have the motor secretly wired up.

Skyrifter you said so yourself, that youd need to replace the magnets eventually making the magnets its fuel, the original magnet would intitially have the most fuel and though it may seem like its moving on its own without expendeding energy, the magnets original charge is transferred into the outlets of sound (by the motor) meaning that by the time the energy from the generator reaches the lightbulb, it will not produce the original amout of energy in the form of light
Just keep in mind though that you are using the permanent magnets as fuel for your engine. Currently it takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-20 times the energy to make a magnet then the energy the magnet produces.
When you make one completely out of electromagnetic magnets based on phase differentials that has a positive net gain post it. Then again that should be a violation of thermodynamics =(

@alchemic85 Not only can it not be accomplished by magnets due to them losing their magnetism over time, but permanent magnets won't work because the magnetic lines of force will bump into each other, causing the machine to come to a stop. It will find equilibrium quickly.
You'd have to have an electromagnet pulsed on and off, but then you have yourself an interesting motor. A device that has already been invented.

Even if you have to move the strong magnet with your hand, it's only a small movement compared to the rapid spinning of the flywheel. I wonder if you can do a feedback system, where the energy produced is used to make the strong magnet move, and thus you also eliminate the magnetic friction and (you may) get a net increase of energy.

This does not work. You have to constantly adjust the placement of the magnet to get the disk to spin. There is no way to replicate this without using your hand to contstantly adjust the magent to keep the disk spinning.

@leswhitehouse666 You have to oscillate the magnet manually to keep it moving. You can't have perpetual motion EVER. You'd have to have an electromagnet pulsing on and off at the right speed to keep the disc turning, but you may as well hook the battery up to the light instead, as it would take less power to do that than to power the pulsing electromagnet.

@NickTsol your looking at it wrong, we can easily get enough electricity to power everything in the entire world just with solar panels, the real problem, is location, we cant charge electric cars while we use them cause then they would either need to be plugged in or be even more wasteful with wireless powering. so though it may not be the most efficient thing in the world building an engine system like this would allow people to move electricity far easier then most modern means...

Suns get their energy from nuclear fusion. there is a 'strong nuclear force' within atoms, fusing light elements together releases this strong nuclear force in the form of radiation and kinetic energy. If you were to encapsulate the sun in a (clear) box for a billion years, and were to weigh it at the beginning and the end of that billion years, the sun will be significantly lighter. E=mc^2.

@fricktronick i got into town a day earlier than i expected and got the magnets. no it does not work. i tried with all the same poles facing straight out, then at a 45 degree angle, and it doesn't go. the magnetic field kinda curves around and the next magnet can't break the field. i thought maybe the correct angles would work, but it seems pretty unfunctional.

If you need to move your hand to make it work then this is not the same. Yes if you move the magnet sure it will work but you need to provide work to get it to spin. Essentially by moving your magnet, you are varying the field. The replictaions shows the magnet still and the wheel spinning. That is where the Hoax comes in.

Now, before I debug this simple and creative machine, I would like to point out that it is hard to observe all possible variables from a single-perspective video.
If you notice at 1:57,he is moving the handheld magnets.If you can understand this, how he is able to keep this working is due to the motion of his hand affecting the position of the hand-held magnet.
If he tape down the magnet at his "sweet spot," it would move a bit and then rest between two magnetic fields.

Actually, I meant Binary Star System, where two suns rotate around a common axis. Just wondering why that behavior has/can not be simulated with magnets.
BTW- I tried the procedure that is the subject of this blog, and as you stated, it requires a "jiggle" of the hand to keep the top rotating. I suspect that somehow (while we weren't looking no doubt), the author of the video fired up the motor while we were watching him "spin up" the device! Cleaver man.

Well, a pulsar system, or any other system of large bodies in the universe are bound not by dipole magnetic bodies, but rather the attraction force of all matter on large scales, known as gravity.
The problem with using simply magnetism to propel a body continuously is that it's dipolar nature makes the magnetic bodies want to find equilibrium, rather than continuously be propelled.
That's what this whole perpetual motion thing everyone excites over really boils down to.

I'm dying to figure out how he did this... I played around with one on the week end and couldn't get it to spin very long.
I noticed that thumping rythm does happen when I spin the wheel and hold a magnet to it but it brings the wheel to a stop.
If it is a fake, it is pretty convincing... if it is real... it is pretty elusive to reproduce.
I'd love to see it work in person.

A very clever stumper for my physics students!
The idea is that you present the N pole of the magnet to the disk, the N's on one edge are repulsed while the S's on the other edge are attracted, so the disk spins forever! Hooray!
This doesn't work because rotating a magnet from N to S within the field of another magnet takes work/energy. If you do the math, the flipping consumes more energy than the attraction and repulsion give.

I had this idea 2 years ago. I was 12 and I thought that it would make perpetual energy. The magnets will run out of charge, and it will die.

those are neodymium magnets(rare earth) and their field doesnt die for over 400 years if there not chipped

but it would take years and years for the charge to run out. So it might as well be a perpetual motion machine.

Even if this machine could produce the amount of power to light ONE lightbulb, which he conveniently left out of the video, leading me to doubt that it can light a lightbulb anyways, it would be impracticle to have one of these, or just one massive one, to power every appliance? this may be a elementary generator, but a perpetual energy generator it is not. perpetual. perpetual is defined as ageless, continuing forever or indefinitely, or lasting forever...

um dude the lightbulb did light at the end of the video look at the end of the wires. ghibblesplat above you beat you to the real flaw. the magnet charge wouldnt last.

oh shit i just remembered lol, this isnt a post on energy transfers. the magnets dont have a energy source to keep them constantly charged meaning that eventually they would lose there charge, making it imperpetual. besides the energy produced by the spinning magnets probably isnt even a strong enough charge to make lights (which require a certain amount of wattage to light) well... light!

Skyrifter you said so yourself, that youd need to replace the magnets eventually making the magnets its fuel, the original magnet would intitially have the most fuel and though it may seem like its moving on its own without expendeding energy, the magnets original charge is transferred into the outlets of sound (by the motor) meaning that by the time the energy from the generator reaches the lightbulb, it will not produce the original amout of energy in the form of light

Fun stuff.
Just keep in mind though that you are using the permanent magnets as fuel for your engine. Currently it takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-20 times the energy to make a magnet then the energy the magnet produces.
When you make one completely out of electromagnetic magnets based on phase differentials that has a positive net gain post it. Then again that should be a violation of thermodynamics =(

-inventions must have so many-& many backups that they hardly need-them for mere childish worries!
airplanes need a backup system to turn the airplanes wings into a safe parachute gliding system making it absolutely flawless in crashing.,
