Poland is right to say Jackson used metaphors but he still failed because Jackson turned a girl's envisioning of heaven into a wannabe WDMC crock of shit. The film dishonors the book by avoiding everything it set out to accomplish; the biggest flaw being that it doesn't even show the challenges the parents faced in the novel. Where is Abigail's contempt for motherhood? That is one of the reasons other than Susie's death why she left her family.

The film claims to be an adaptation of Sebold's novel, but does it really prove it is? No. Look at Grandma Lynn. She is supposed to be holding the family together but instead we have a comedy sequence. That's fucking brilliant, eh? Then we have Ray and Susie/Jack and Abigail just getting together for convenience and Lindsey's struggle to get independence from Susie's death exorcised from the movie. That's why this movie failed. Because Jackson didn't care.

Well, it sure didn't show in the movie. It seems those years ended up giving us a dumbed down, watered down version of Sebold's story.

us normal joe public loved this movie sooooo why do all the media critics hate it???they tell us crap movies like transformers..spiderman..india­na jones...avatar are brillant....they want 2 turn cinema into a computer game or fairground ride...soulless cold modern cinema......eye loved this movie and eye liked this fellas review

the movie was great and unsettling. I went in expecting the movie to be bad (because of reviews), but I found it to be very interesting. The story makes you focus on something very unsettling (the rape and murder of Susie Salmon...this is not shown for those who are concerned, but it is implied and left for the interpretation of viewers). The narration and execution of the story is very fluid and deep. Stanley Tucci's performance is also excellent and worth noting.

Correct me if I'm wrong. If you're adapting the film, you wouldn't NEED Stanlet Tucci's character. The film would be about loss. As such, the film should have stayed in that direction as a story. This film was not a powerful piece. It was a film that should have never been adapted. And FILM is a collective medium. That means if you make a film, for who is it for? Answer: THE AUDIENCE. If you find your own story and it caters to only yourself as an artist, it becomes an excercise in masturbation.
