The appropriate word to use whenever a devotee wants to describe the images of God in Sanatana Dharma or hindu dharma or ISKCON is "MURTHI".The word idol must never be used. A murthi is organically sculpted by a person spending months and years of blood and sweat.Then that is brought to the temple (place of worship) and after following elaborate procedures,invoking the powers of all sacred people (Gods,Goddesses),sanctified,co­nsecrated and installed in proper place.Now the MURTHI is energized

The word in sanskrit is " MURTHI " . There is no exact equivalent word or translation in English language. The word DEITY to describe MURTHI is not really correct . Ofcourse the other translation " Idol " is even worse. The words idol and deity are used and given by foreigners to denigrate,to besmirch and treat with contempt ( ISLAM &christianity ruled the world for 1000 yrs between themselves ) .You should simply use the word MURTHI as such.
