  • 'Nailing' is quite often the result of incorrect camshaft and/or injection pump timing.

  • dude i wanna get a 300d whats the mpg on tht baby?

  • hows the acceleration without the turbo ? by the way i love these w123's and nice vid !

  • hows the acceleration without the turbo ?

  • Do you see much difference with an intercooler ?

    André, Ontario, Canada, 1985 300D ( stock ! )

  • what is the vertical tube that feeds into the fuel filter? I hear these engines are rated 850K on the 5 cylinder (300 d series) and 1.2 million on the 240D (4 cylinder). However, the transmissions tend to be rated about 450K.

  • @storkullar

I think you're seeing the can of Diesel Purge. Basically you run the engine on strictly the diesel purge. The two hoses that are going into the can are the feed line to the fuel pump, and the return line from the fuel filter.

  • Cool sounds real nice

  • so nocking is from the injector and not the rod bearing?

  • @idusclothing

Yup. If fuel doesn't atomize correctly or at the right time, it can basically cause the diesel equivalent of ignition knock or pinging, otherwise known as 'nailing'.

  • Isnt just your hydraulic tappits? My 1990

E30 makes the same sort of noise on cold start

  • Absolutely one of the best and most durable cars on the planet. I could never destroy my 80 240D. Nice 300D. I still see lots of these on the road. How many GM, Chrysler, or Ford cars do you see of this vintage still driving around in good condition?

  • @windwmx78 Come down to Arizona they are all over the place, seriously on a 5 mile drive to school every day I see at least 6 others, and never the same two each day.

  • cool ol Benz, i really need to get another on some day

  • Diesel Purhe works like magic.....i do mine once a month. works great. Check out my sd

  • I love W123

  • If ya wont quit, diesel isnt for you. Diesel should be loud and obnoxus like everyone loves!

  • Diesel is for me, and has been for many years. I just like having my engines running in tip top shape. Some noises are acceptable, and some aren't. Injector-induced knocking or nailing is NOT an acceptable noise on a diesel.

  • Ya I know, iI just my engines loud, but not if it means somethings wrong with it. I also havent heard too many early 80's benz diesel in tip top shape. usually they have 300k on them and werent taken care of well. Anyway, Straight pipe it! 15-25% better fuel ecconomy, better(louder) exhuast note, and slight increase in power.

  • straight pipes are illeagal.

  • In some areas, cops usually dont notice or care, and who gives a fuck if its illegal? not me..

  • yeah my dad had straights on his stang cobra for about a year until he finally got pulled over for it.

  • That I believe, the stang would be way louder. You dont straight pipe a gasonline engine anyway, they lose power without backpressure. Diesel engines dont make a vaccum and so dont need backpressure. The diesel would be quiter also.

  • @Xx69roadrunnerxX backpressure is a load of bullshit. you dont need it for any 4 stroke engine.

  • These old diesels are "non catylist" so they don't need any emmisions equipment.

  • A properly flowing muffler will subtract almost nothing from your exhaust flow. I personally think straight pipes sound god awful, they sound nice, but driving around really gives me a head ache. You might gain 15-25% better fuel economy if the muffler you have is really old and all rusted on the inside, basically a clogged up muffler.

  • On my 240D I took off the resonator (rear muffler) and replaced it with the end of a 5" chrome stack from a truck, but I left on the front muffler, its louder, but at idle it doesn't sound as choked up. Instead of cackling at the tailpipe it rumbles.

  • nice video. have you ever thought of running it on veggie oil ?

  • ...so what exactly is involved in the purging process? I am planning on buying one of these cars. By the way, nice car, how do you like it?

  • Basically, you disconnect the main fuel line from the engine, then run a hose from there to your can of Diesel Purge. Do the same with the return line - stick that in the can of DP too. So in other words, the engine will run strictly on the DP and not the fuel in your tank. Let the engine run on the DP until it's almost out. You might want to rev the engine up a few times to help loosen any gunk.Once it's nearly out, shut the engine off, and reconnect the fuel lines. Then change your filters.

  • Sounds strong. Did you use the purge in the tank, or did you use it concentrated?

  • If you look closely, you can see the can of DP sitting near the big fuel filter. It has two clear lines going into to the can. :)

You need to run the purge through the fuel system at full strength.

  • it sounds very good =)
