Perhaps many of you know this, but I read many years ago that Jim Dandy had a hoof condition which made it uncomfortable for him to run on a hard track. Apparently, he relished running in the goo because it didn't cause him discomfort, and that's why he came up big here. Thanks so much for posting this history making classic!
Yes, the track came up sloppy, but give some credit to Jim Dandy, he ran the race of his life! There's no shame on Gallant Fox in losing this race, he just didn't seem to fire for some reason. He was a great champion.
I hear ya, but it is what it is. That said, I agree that it is VERY historic. I also remember Arcangues at the Breeders Cup winning at 133-1 under Jerry Bailey; his pro ride helped pull it off.
I've read that the owner scratched Jim Dandy from a race on the undercard because the track turned up muddy, which JD thrived on. His owner thought he had a shot at making some money, but he couldn't have predicted JD's romp, and against a TC champion to boot! That's the amazing part. Horses for courses!
I agree, Jazzy. This footage is quite the thing to witness. It's not everyday that a horse that was barely an allowance horse beats a Triple Crown champion!
Happy you liked the race. My evening is going fine, thank you. Hope yours is as well. :)
Wow, I am so glad you have this! Is there any audio available for this race at all? Especially a radio announcement of it?
Thanks!

It was soooo sloppy that day.
I wish Fox was just a wee bit closer than that!
Love Gallant Fox to the end though

Don't care that it's partial, don't care that it's silent. This is pure gold! It's historic value is immeasurable.
