Masters of Horror - Incident On and Off a Mountain Road

Not discussing the point of an old man in this episode, but, what was he? A ghost, or an old man whom Moonface was keeping because he had a bit of respect for his bravery powered by crazyness?

P.S. The episode is good if you don't mind low budget and their obsession to put no matter what at least one hideous monster per episode. Hm, Doctor Who has a same issue, can anyone tell me why?
